I can hear fire exchanged near the river. There's a sad, gurgling sound as a Sturmboat and it's Fuselier passengers sinks to the bottom of the Moscow River.

Several Shuetzen squads are driven out the eastern-most housing block. The Soviet line begins to firm up as we move to retake the pontoon bridge crossing area.

It's sort of handy to have your arty batteries go out of contact for a couple of turns. It allows them to reload.

107s and 120s smack into the 300m x 800m foothold that the Germans have in the northeast riverbank. It looks like it might have been pretty bad for the Germans there. :D

Katyushas continue to spiral into both the southeastern and northeastern advances. Buildings are burning everywhere. I sure wish those Katys were onboard. I can't keep this up much longer.

It's also interesting to note that trenchs tend to draw artillery fire. It's raining hard and has been for days. The trenchs are just too wet and muddy to sit in. ;)

The heavy bombarment from the Russian side continues. This is becoming a major threat to our operations. 107mm and 120mm mortarshells are dropping everywhere in huge quanities.

Attack is the best defence so some mobile units were ordered to do agressive scouting and the results were very good. Reports state firing between two stugs and two huge T35 tanks, Stugs continue to live :)

The next strategic complex of buildings is well defended by regular infantry which hasn't been seen before. Those militia squads still continue to die. Also some succesfully scouting was made by light armored cars.

Operation Kaninchen is in full speed and has been succesfull for now.

DerC has the turn.

Some of our brave fusiliers that have already crossed the river now report killing a militia squad and also attacking another one. Another sturmboot is lost in an unfortunate 'boating-accident'.

The block of houses near the bridgehead is occupied by at least a half platoon of infantry. Our mortar crew scouting there was killed.

At the end of the turn, some good news. Our 105mm artillery fired some counter-battery fire at those Katyushas. Should keep them quiet for a while. :D Also, I think I saw one message stating the breakdown of a Russian 120mm mortar..

Back to Scharfschütze.

You know, Jess, I just would trade 100 T-35´s for a single KV-1. Or three BT-7... or just about anything. They are almost as bad as those Conscripts!

But fighting your own gear sure makes things interesting... I pray we´ll receive reinforcements soon!

A rifle squad inches forward through the rubble to come face-to-face with a SPW 250/9, a MG34 (Laf) Trp and a Panzerbuechse. They assaulted the SPW and grenaded the other two. They're all dead now. The Rifles slipped back into the rubble to await more victims. :D

I managed to take one of our few KV-2s, immobilize it in a building, and make another useless bunker. (And it's not like we don't already have a passle of useles bunkers already. )

A BF110D-3 makes yet another strike on our ammo supplies and dispatches an ammo box with his bombs. :(

Since you've done this twice now, I'm gonna tell you what happens when you make an air strike.

I CAN SEE EVERYTHING! EVERYTHING!!!!

As soon as your air flys over the map, the minimap displays the locations of ALL the German units. Subsequent artillery barrages then give me a snapshot of German forces in the area of the barrage. :p

(I then relay all the pertinent info to my comrade-in-arms. ;) )

Now, I don't care for this 'feature', but then I don't care for having our artillery and ammo blown to bits either.

So the balls in your court, German scum. Use air at your own risk.

Let's see.

You'll get to see the map when a plane flies over. That's not nice at all. You can plot your arty accurately and so.

BUT

If a plane aims at an ammo box, it's usually right next to some arty (that's your mortars) it should also do something bad to them.

In theory you can "safely" have 6 pieces of arty around a ammo box. So, what could possibly happen to those mortars if a say 500kg bomb or loads of 250kg bombs would be dropped right in the middle of them. If you can't find the answer, just look at the sight of the previous air strikes :)

I'll play the turn tonight.

Interesting turn, reports of our pilots scouting for russians is unfortunate, traitors will be shot asap.

Our spearheads have slowed down a bit waiting for the infantry to catch up but should be moving forward very soon.

Another T35 died
.
.
.
by 20mm cannon
.
.
.
from like 10 hexes :D :D

Some more militia squads killed, looking strangely quiet in some sections.

Edit: Also lost a armored car because I was stupid.
DerC has the turn.

We regain control of the southern end of the block of houses near the bridge. The Russians will surely try to retake them since they provide an excellent line of fire to the bridge! We are however hopeful that our defensive line will hold better this time.

I also just heard from my comrade Kaakao about the Luftwaffe spying for the Russians. Anyway, they seem to be doing a nice job making the artillery barrages easier to bear. We have decided to continue the air raids. (I do think this is only fair because we have been provided the planes in the first place)

Your turn.

Hee hee - Russian Luftwaffe.

I didn't say it was fair or not, I just thought the Germans, et al, should be aware of the shortcomings of using air. :)

The fight in the west rages on. Our troops dispatch an enemy Zugtrupp with well-aimed rifle fire and a SPW250/9 meets its fate in the form of a 152mm round from a KV-2.

No survivors...

For all their boasting and bragging, the invaders have lost their pace...

Nothing much happens on the ground. A lone fueselier squad is found in OUR trenches. How audacious! :p

A BF110 tries to cap a KV-2 - doesn't succeed - and gets shot down by small arms fire.

A Ju88 does manage to kill a 120mm mortar and force the retreat of another. He takes some small arms fire and leaves the map damaged. :D

Soviet Luftwaffe spies report a company of infantry and a handful of tanks have bogged down under heavy artillery barrages on the soviet side of the Moscow river. The rest of the Fueselier company appears to be about mid-river in their silly little sturmboats.

The Lubyanka prisoners are rushing towards the assault. Boy! are the Germans gonna be in big trouble when they get there.

I agree with the HQs assessment that it was worth the risk to use Luftwaffe here. The Russian bombardments have milded considerably and hopefully they don't have any crucial information on the whereabouts of our troops. In the east, it's a quiet turn. Just some minor skirmishes around the western end of the bridgehead.

Back to you...

We proudly announce that we have dispatched a flamer team trying to sneak up on our troops. A tremendous blow to the enemy, no doubt.

On the rest of the line, our KV-2s send several shells southward, causing great consternation among the foe...

-Kill some infantry [X]

-Don't lose any panzers [X]

I think there could be a bug in the scen, my infantry doesn't know how to get to the water although they carry rafts for that purpose.

Do they have enough move left? Seems to me troops need a couple of points to switch to their rafts... just a thought, and now brace for our mortars scouring the riverbanks ;)

I had some problems with the rafts at first, too. The infantry just wouldn't use them from some hexes. And they do need to have full movement points to load.

A SS PzGrenadier squad spots maybe two platoons of Russian riflemen having some vodka right next to the bridgehead! No one seems to spot the SS-men so they first make preparations for an artillery strike. Sadly, the Russians seemed to sober up pretty quickly after the SS started shooting at them  End result is moderate casualties for both sides and a burning German halftrack. :(

In the western end of the bridgehead there are some firefights as well. Lots of Russians there, too.

Back to you!

The invaders have brought flametanks to our trenches!

Our rookie infantry and gun crews seem to be too scared for a proper welcoming, a perish quickly.

If the troops refuse to put up a more spirited defence soon, we will have to resort to summary executions. It appears that only the mortar and KV-2 fire is holding back the enemy in some places...

Well that's good news. The Moscow River is too cold for the wimpy wermacht. Don't want to get their feet wet! (As M4 Jess would say, "Sissys") Maybe kaakaos men need hip-waders like DerCs Fueseliers. They seem to be arriving okay.

Some of the fleetest of the Lubyanka Prisoners arrive at the river and promptly take charge of a small boat shack. When they discovered the beaten Fueselier squad right outside, they proceeded to beat the Germans senseless with boat oars. Then they took their hip-waders as souvenirs. :D

I think the German intelligence was a bit confused. We weren't drinking vodka, we were readying our moltovs. Cocktail, sir? ;)

Interesting to note that the eastern line hasn't moved since the beginning of the game. (I expect that'll be changing soon)

Fighting breaks out in the eastern part of the bridgehead. I spotted a KV-2 near the trenchline running north from the bridgehead  Now they MUST have had some vodka, since they didn't shoot at the infantry scouting nearby. :D ;)

The above mentioned Fusilier group gets back its confidence and retaliates by killing a few members from a partisan (they are the prisoners, if I'm not mistaken?) squad.

Nothing major to report, back to Scharf.

The enemy is bringing concentrated artillery down on our trenches. The first mechanised units have broken through and are trying to flank our postions.

The situation on the front is desperate, but every minute the foe is delayed here allows us to bolster our defences along the roads to the inner city...

Reports are coming in from the eastern incursion of PzIV and StugIII moving through the rubble escorted by some really shot-up Scheutzen squads. The StuG is engaged without effect. Some casualties were reported. Rifle squads dispatch a nearby errant Halftrack that wandered too far north by itself. :p

The radio crackles with frantic reports of suspected Special Ops infiltrators in the vicinity of the State Dept Store. (Now they're seeing spooks)

Those prisoners in the boathouse make another sally at the beached Fuesiliers and get driven back by a hail of bullets. Boat oars just didn't cut it. Batteries of 105s pound the housing along the northern shore and dispatch the remainder of that prisoner squad.

Forward-most units have reported the possible demise of a SiG33 gun. Apparently it made one h#!! of a 'Pop' when the barrel split. :D

Observers are also reporting very successful 107mm barrages in the west, with slightly less success in the east.

Capt. Pixel picks his way thorugh the tumbled wreckage of bombed-out buildings and rubbled streets and scrambles his squad to their new position.

It was Beeeautiful I tell ya. The mortars would hit and then the screen would scroll, and scroll, and scroll. And then they'd would hit again and scroll some more. :D It seemed that every shell in the western barrage hit and bit something. Maybe even a kaninchen or two, eh?

(I can't believe there are Falmingos wandering around in the streets of Moscow. One of those German bombardments must've broken the Zoo gates. It's a shame we don't have time to capture them. They'll just have to die. :( My adjutant tells me they "Taste like chechen, uh,.. chicken")

Sure are a lot of animal references in this battle (?)
