I know this has been asked before. I know I've SEEN it asked before. But my google-foo is failing me.

The manual says Japan gets some reinforcements if Allies enter Vietnam. I feel like I've seen in the forum people clarifying that it needed to be the Chinese who entered Vietnam and I also seem to recall perhaps a cut off date where it stopped being true. (Although that last part I am less sure of).

Anyone refresh my memory? I found some wiki's floating around with the other Lines of Death (thanks for the leg work on those BW!) but not this one.

8.8 INDO-CHINA JAPANESE MILITIA
Each time an Allied unit moves into Indo-China, the Japanese will receive a Japanese (representing Vietnamese/Vichy French forces) militia division (up to a maximum of 4). Thus if 2 ground units move into Indo-China, and then 1 unit moves from one border hex to another, 3 militia divisions will be formed. These militia divisions will be formed in Hanoi, Haiphong, Luang Prabang, and Hue in that order, and they will be formed at 1/3 strength.

There is a cutoff date, though I don't remember the exact date. I know a Chinese move into Vietnam in 1942 triggers the reinforcements; I know such a move in 1944 does NOT trigger reinforcements. But I can't recall about 1943.

I thought the cutoff was for Thai forces to reflect their dropping out of the war?

Going on memory though.

I believe the cutoff date is 1/1/43. I'm not sure if it applies to anything but a Chinese invasion, meaning if Commonwealth troops push into Indochina from Burma it may not trigger in '42.

Also, the units that arrive are pretty crappy.

This is from memory from a thread that came up about a year ago or so.

1/1/43 is my understanding too. But the manual seems very clear that it is Allied units, not only Chinese, as triggers.

It was funny, I actually forced the allied troops in Victoria Point etc to retreat.. Straight over the border to Thailand, and got the Thai-units

. But yes, they are pretty crappy..

This test was done on 1.7.11.23j2.

I did a little testing in 1941 and Jan 1942. Walking a chinese unit across the boarder (from Nanning) into Lang Son or the hex one south of it triggers two Vietnamese Divs to spawn at Hanoi (1st VM Div) and Haiphong (2nd VM Div).

Walking another Chinese LCU doesn't do anything. Walking a third in causes another round of reinforcements. 3rd VM Div appears at Luangrabang and the 4th VM Div appears at Heue. I walked an additional 4 LCUs in after this and got no further reinforcements, leading me to conclude that this was it.

The second test I did was I marched Burmese and India troops from Burma to Vietnam. I decided on this test since I figured over-land was the most common way Vietnam gets invaded by the Allies. A couple quirks here, but ultimately the same results.

First I did the hex South West of Vinh (65,60) which didn't trigger a reinforcement. The hext east of that (66,60) did. Same pattern as Chinese (up to 2 LCUs, just 2 Divs, after, 4 total Divs).

The other quirky thing is that despite a Div appearing at Luangrabang you can take this base without triggering reinforcements. You can also take Vientiane. I didn't test any other more southern bases.
