I take the opposite approach and put all my scientist in my home spaceport where I build my labs to about 20 each. I do this as it makes defending one location easier than multiple locations. I always have a large spaceport by the time I get a second scientist, and I build at three defensive bases around my home planet. I'm not sure if that is the most effective approach. As I understand it, if two scientist have bonus in, for example, energy research, you get the full benefit from the first one and half of the benefit from the second one. Of course, if scientist has two or even all three categories, then that scientist will impact all the research rather than just one if it is in a research lab. What I don't know is whether a scientist bonus just impacts the labs at the location it is at or all the labs in the empire. At which point, I assume that the stacking (full for one, half from the rest) apply. As far as security, I have never had a sabotage mission work against my home space port. Doesn't mean that it can't happen, just haven't seen one. So two different approaches. I'm more worried about a pirate raid than a spy so I want a big defense around them. I do understand the other approach.
