Should make for a very interesting game ;)..

Quixote sure knows what he is doing, no doubt about that. Lets see what I can do to slow him down.

Incredible that Singapore would not inflict more casualties on the Japanese than a mere 870. The troops must have been fed propaganda about the Japanese having Geisha houses for POWs.

Good job on that invasion convoy! Seven allied torp hits scored for none by the Japanese - great dice roll!

As said before, biggest news is the fall of Singapore.

As for other news:
- Australian cruisers are unmolested and on the way to Sydney
- Dutch Harbour is reinforced by the 201st infantry regiment
- 14th army is now planning for Colombo (might be important, might be a ruse. I'll start considering it once Port Blair falls)
- Imperial Guards are nowhere to be seen yet
- Dutch navy bombards Horn Island and damages the base / Kisaraga anchored there
- Imperial carriers sweep past the north coast of Darwin picking off stragglers. A couple of ships are in danger of being sunk (including the heavily damaged Danae, now heading for Capetown)

22nd/23rd december

Fairly quiet turns. The fleet carriers of the coast of Port Hedland turned back and left my shipping @ peace..

Port Blair is bombed. This means I won't be able to dig in much. Shock attack with a division should neutralise it..

Morning Air attack on Port Blair , at 46,58

Weather in hex: Heavy cloud

Raid spotted at 19 NM, estimated altitude 13,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 5 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 21
Ki-21-IIa Sally x 43

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-21-IIa Sally: 14 damaged

Allied ground losses:
6 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Airbase hits 14
Airbase supply hits 11
Runway hits 49

Aircraft Attacking:
17 x Ki-21-IIa Sally bombing from 8000 feet
Airfield Attack: 4 x 250 kg GP Bomb
26 x Ki-21-IIa Sally bombing from 8000 feet
Airfield Attack: 4 x 250 kg GP Bomb

The US fleet arrive at Sydney and repair minor damage from the travel. East coast of Australia is covered well by Patrol Planes now.

Japanese troops land at Koumac. New Caledonia is nearly undefended.

Side note:
I am going on a short holiday (one week) tommorow so the AAR will quiet down. Will be back though...

Back from the fairy tale camping site (2 year old loved it) and back to the war!

24-dec-1941

China

The main push is taking place above Hankow (nearly 3000 AV) with (armoured) flanking movements as far up as Paotow. I would say Quixote is trying to envelop Chungking from the north.

Closing down China requires (or at least it speeds things up) taking Rangoon. No major moves are made into Burma yet.

A couple of 100 Chinese AV is now destroyed and at least 1200 AV in direct danger.

Cruisers and an old destroyer strike mines at Banjoewangi

TF 276 encounters mine field at Banjoewangi (57,107)

Japanese Ships
DD Umikaze, Mine hits 1, heavy damage
CL Abukuma, Mine hits 1
CL Yura, Mine hits 1

2 mines cleared

Koumac is captured on New Caledonia... I am worried about not having seaplanes to search the area north of New Caledonia. Establishing a base at Norfolk should become a priority.

Northern Australia

My best guess is that Wyndham is going to be invaded. If my recon is correct its not a big force landing and thats pushing it against Darwin. It might be just the first wave though..

20+ Hudsons are set to naval bomb next turn. Not expecting to much from that.. Navy is staying out of it as the area is a deathtrap for ships..

Air war:
3 to 1 odds in favour of the allies today with a total of 60 Japanese aircraft (mostly Sally and Nells) destroyed. Running out of fighters... I am looking forward to the Hurricanes I am going to receive in 1942...

Indeed.. They must have missed a couple of troop ships there.

28-dec-1941

Northern Australia

The Australians were able to hold the first shock attack at Darwin disabling about a hundred squads.

Ground combat at Darwin (76,124)

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 12113 troops, 103 guns, 58 vehicles, Assault Value = 503

Defending force 7391 troops, 90 guns, 42 vehicles, Assault Value = 206

Japanese adjusted assault: 80

Allied adjusted defense: 170

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 2)

Combat modifiers
Defender: forts(+), preparation(-), experience(-)
Attacker: shock(+), disruption(-)

Japanese ground losses:
1126 casualties reported
Squads: 5 destroyed, 99 disabled
Non Combat: 4 destroyed, 9 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 9 disabled

Allied ground losses:
360 casualties reported
Squads: 11 destroyed, 34 disabled
Non Combat: 5 destroyed, 13 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 8 disabled
Guns lost 5 (2 destroyed, 3 disabled)
Units destroyed 1

Assaulting units:
8th Tank Regiment
56th Division

Defending units:
2/2nd Ind Coy
19th Australian Battalion
2/4 MG Battalion
Gull Battalion
Sparrow Battalion
Emery Point Fortress
2nd RAN Base Force
7th Mil. District
Darwin RAAF Base Force

2/2nd Ind Coy was destroyed. Mobile forces (cavalry and armour) are being moved up North to ensure no raiders come down and make life even more miserable after Darwin falls..

Southeast Asia

The convoy (harrassed by dutch submarines, sinking one cargo vessel) I spotted earlier moving up the Malacca strait is heading further north, now confirmed supported by carriers. My guess is Port Blair is the target (but ofcourse, I have been wrong before). A cruiser force build around Cornwall and Exeter will position to strike any invasion fleet bound for Port Blair. I have decent patrol plane coverage so shouldn't get suprised.

Managed to extract pieces of interesting information from the SIGINT.

SIG INT REPORT FOR Dec 28, 41

1/38th Division is loaded on xAP Kitano Maru moving to San Fernando.
16/16th Division is planning for an attack on Mauban.

This means that one, perhaps two divisions are going to be deployed on Luzon. This is good news for me as I am in a fairly strong position on Clark and Bataan with a lot of supplies pulled out of Manila.

6/2nd Division is loaded on a Japanese CL moving to Georgetown.

The only thing I can make of this is that 2nd division might be redeployed to Burma OR Quixote is trying to hide the real destination of 2nd division. Might be that 2nd division is heading for Port Blair.

Another possibility (worst case) is that 2nd division is on ships together with 14th army (planning for Colombo, fragments loaded on ships) and heading for Ceylon..

No airforce in place and only british cruisers to counter that thrust. With just one brigade on the Island it would quickly fall.
Sadly, I don't have confirmation of a fragment of 2nd prepping for assault...

The attempt to intercept a landing at Port Blair was a failure.. With the ships in position to strike, the convoy made a sudden move at high speed past Port Blair and in the direction of Ceylon. The escorting carriers launched a strike with devastating accuracy:

Morning Air attack on TF, near Little Andaman at 40,56

Weather in hex: Light rain

Raid detected at 80 NM, estimated altitude 14,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 30 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 37
B5N2 Kate x 13
D3A1 Val x 13

Japanese aircraft losses
B5N2 Kate: 6 damaged
D3A1 Val: 9 damaged
D3A1 Val: 1 destroyed by flak

Allied Ships
CL Enterprise, Bomb hits 1, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
CL Mauritius, Torpedo hits 2, heavy damage
CA Exeter, Torpedo hits 2
CL Glasgow, Bomb hits 1, on fire

38% of the torpedoes struck fast moving cruisers... Ouch

Mauritius is lost in the subsequent turn but the other ships manage to slip away. Looks like two divisions will be landing at Ceylon in the first week of january (defended by 3 Indian brigades) One looks like to be in reserve around Georgetown (sigint).

The convoy that unloaded 18th Brit at Madras is going to escape but only just.. Lucky that I made the decision to stop unloading supplies and reroute the ships to the west coast of India.

Burma seems to heat up. 5 units (at least a tank regiment and possibly the Imperial Guards are starting to move into Pegu from the SE. I am moving out of Rangoon and will delay the advance at Pegu while trying to slip the rest of the troops out North. Once Ceylon falls (foregone conclusion) there is nothing keeping me in Burma.

Looking back at december Quixote is advancing rapidly. He makes good use of his knowledge of troop dispositions for the allies at game start. Japan simply can't be stopped and can make some daring moves deep into allied territory. He is still positioned to strike on either India or Australia but looking at his troop movements (Java being ignored for now) and his committment of carriers into the bay of Bengal I would say an invasion of India is more likely.

Remember those transports I thought had evaded the IJN? They really didn't. Forgetting to reroute them I managed to get them in striking position of japanese carriers (and on top of a couple of submarines blockading Colombo). All but one are lost in the attacks.

There are always more transport ships. But not enough ports. Japanese land in strength at Trincomalee

I am trying to place the attack on Ceylon in perspective:

Strategic objectives of the Empire of Japan:

- Secure resources to continue fighting the war
- Secure sufficient bases to support the war effort
- Secure a defensive perimeter to protect existing and captured assets
- Damage or destroy allied land, sea and air forces
- Deprive the allies of good staging areas for future offensive operations

At first glance it could be any of the following

- Secure sufficient bases to support the war effort
- Secure a defensive perimeter to protect existing and captured assets
- Damage or destroy allied land, sea and air forces
- Deprive the allies of good staging areas for future offensive operations

Right now losing Ceylon hurts. It will probably be used as a staging area for attacking India. But looking at the bright side, Japanese internal sealanes are already lengthening considerably..

The allies should now work to interdict the Singapore - Ceylon supply line. Submarines is what I can use here..

I think you are starting to sound like the Black Knight in a Monty Pythons movie!! This has every potential to knock Britain/India out for good. The best you can do in either India or Aus is to buy as much time as you can. In my humble estimation you must be VERY aggressive where he is not, even in '42. At this point you have at least 10-14 days without KB to worry about. You may have 30 days if he moves quickly to Bombay/Pakistan. Use those pristine BBs, lose a couple if need be ....blow the hell outa Truk and everything east. Grab a quicker than normal toehold west out of Alaska. That might scare the hell outa him as Japan starts with 3 wheelbarrows and a donkey in the Kuriles.

You can't blow the crap out of Truk with a couple of BBs without air cover. He only needs 15+ G4Ms to stop an attack like that. And he has them in position or will have them within a day or two once I get detected while moving in.

Also, to attack positions you need troops. I do not have sufficient troops available for offensive action. If I had a division available I would use it to reinforce a already held position. Ofcourse I could pull of a carrier raid. It would just give away the position of the carriers. Currently he doesn't know where they are so he needs to take them into account in his plans. Hence, no unescorted invasions. Every major landing he made was under cover.

I have been on the receiving end of early allied raids. They are annoying. Nothing more...

To knock out India means taking many major cities over a large area. Also garrisons need to be used to stop the locals from wrecking his supply lines and bases.. He is in a good position but still very far from knocking out Britain or India.

I must say, you have what it takes to play Allied in CG2. Imperial Japan is a bully in a candy store. If you pull a knife he'll pull a gun. The correct temperament must be assumed early and often. Look for tactical victories to soil his moral and stymie his strategy. Project power only when absolutely necessary to further your aims. Without bringing my own travails here, do think ahead now so that when the time comes you can strike him. India is not a gimme either, with or without Ceylon.

ps I have never attacked Truk by sea. I have been advised against it many times. I can tell you in my CG2 I have no where near the naval aviator pilot pool needed to replace what's on my carriers now (July '42). Risking Capital ships for temporary discomfort for the IJN naval station at Truk simply isn't worth it. I would advise judicious use of PPs and try and bank what you can. Maximize the use of support ships, ie. tenders, PTs, etc.. US subs are of little use above fear factor and mining for a long time. Extend seaplane bases to cover sealanes and give early warning. Build and STOCK a forward area or two out of the way but in proximity to expected future lines of advance and supply to New Zealand and Australia. Careful forethought with the marine def bns placements and navy base forces. Now I ramble.

Thanks for your comments Zulu. Always appreciated!

Battle for SIAN

Flank protection by Quixote is weak. My biggest concern is the slow movement of Group C. Quixote might blitz Sian and after that fall back two divisions to hold of the assault.

If he is not able to take Sian by shock attack I have a decent chance of stabilising the situation.

Except for China, the steady advance on Colombo on Ceylon (with one Indian brigade already virtually destroyed by pursuing tank regiments) the most important events currently are.

- CL de Ruyter sunk by submarine
- CL Danae sunk on its way to Capetown due to damage sustained earlier

Japanese carriers are positioning NW of Ceylon. They might start a sweep of the Indian coast. Search assets positioned so I can keep track.

Yorktown receives its escorts and starts the trip to Sydney to join up with her sister ship and Lexington. Saratoga is still in North pacific (undetected). Will move her down after the next unloading of supplies at Dutch. A (Omaha class) cruiser squadron arrivés at Dutch to take over covering the area.

S-40 sinks due to earlier sustained damage (Manila air strike)

The carrier group first identified SE of Diego Garcia (the group that sweeped the NW coast of Australia) is now moving along the western Indian coast towards Bombay. There is not much shipping in the area and most of the ships that are in the area should be able to move off map in time.

What worries me is that I have a taskforce inbound with two tank regiments arriving just NW of Karachi in a few days. Is it possible to reverse course back to Aden if Quixote insists on moving North? (See attached picture where I tried the order in a backup save file)

The group NE of Sian (in China) that was unidentified is recognised as a armoured/mobile assault group. No doubt the goal is to envelop Sian and cut off the 3000 AV in that area. Reinforcements are moving in to protect the rear of Sian but I am not sure I can stop him (but I am trying to cut/limit supply to the units by taking road hexes in the rear).

He might even hold of on attacking Sian now for this group to move into position.

Ground combat at 85,40 (near Sian)

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 5080 troops, 8 guns, 537 vehicles, Assault Value = 331

Defending force 17473 troops, 77 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 514

Japanese adjusted assault: 382

Allied adjusted defense: 233

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), experience(-)
Attacker: shock(+)

Japanese ground losses:
153 casualties reported
Squads: 2 destroyed, 38 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 27 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Vehicles lost 76 (5 destroyed, 71 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
1345 casualties reported
Squads: 3 destroyed, 168 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 6 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 5 disabled

Assaulting units:
5th Tank Regiment
3rd Tank Regiment
20th Recon Regiment
23rd Tank Regiment
9th Tank Regiment
1st Recon Regiment

Defending units:
1st Chinese Corps
16th Chinese Corps

The carrier group west coast of India went MIA... (uncomfortable)

First elements of the 8th US MC regiment are unloading at Suva. Queen Elizabeth will have to do another trip to fetch the rest of the regiment..

A NZ Brigade is still unloading at Norfolk Island. Apparantly the east coast of Australia is not the target but this base will be helpfull in keeping the lines open.

From what I read in AARs, it works most of the time for people. But not always. Michael has commented to the effect that the code has trouble with that and it is not really supported.

It seems spotty. I once tried to send a damaged BB, which was off map on the way to Cape Town, back to Diego Garcia.

It popped out in the IO near Socotra 3 weeks later with no fuel and 40 system damage.

Definitely hit "save" before you try it.

Hi Witpqs, thanks for the information. I tested it on a supply convoy that was heading for Bombay. That one correctly turned around for Africa.

Decided to do the same with the tank convoy. As the carrier group is moving on Karachi and will be exactly in range once the convoy arrives it is losing them for sure on the map or perhaps bugging them out of the map..

What a choice...
