I've seen move mode units attack when crossing the hexside and be forced into combat mode as a battle result, but not this.

Were you attacked by LBA or any other air asset? That can kick troops from move to combat mode.

No, I'm sure not though my memory isn't what it once was. That would've likely had to be commander's discretion (which I don't think he uses, nor do I) since the target was in one hex and just ordered to move and arrived the next day. If he had targeted the hex he came from, there was another unit still there which presumably would have drawn the attack.

8/25/42 Here are some of the events of the past several days. First, I've finally gotten around to the invasion of Java, tortoise that I am. Here you see the KB and the invasion fleet. In the main pic you can see a Tojo sweep from Bandjermasin and in the inset an Oscar 1c sweep from Makassar.

Here are some air battles from that day. Over the next few days his fighter force at Soerbaja which numbered around 50 evaporated.

Dang it! I just got Hiyo out of the shop and he puts another torpedo in her!
The red arrow points to a sub that was reported sunk by a mine earlier.

.

The pic's from A Christmas Story if you didn't recognize it. McGavin's coming up from the basement having worked on the furnace and smoke is billowing up and he's covered in soot and plenty peeved.

Raiden apparently thought he could sneak some reinforcements and supplies into Ambon while the KB was off in the Java Sea.

Here was a good day for me in the air. The losses are usually about even steven or a bit in his favor. The battles shown are only some from that day.

I'm sure I shouldn't have done things this way, but I had 3 landing TFs and 3 escort TFs. One landing TFs led and all the others followed. The lead began unloading, another stayed with her but didn't unload and the third ran away. I'm thinking the TM attack caused them to drop their follow order.

I had thought about airdropping a unit at Tjepoe a couple days before the landing to capture it thus avoiding very many casualties, but the Raiding rgt. I would have used didn't arrive in time and I couldn't wait any longer.

Second time I've attacked a larger force here. We'll see if third time's the charm.

Armor is my guess as well. Too bad he had the leader(+), that might have made a big difference. His forces are probably tired and disrupted enough that he has to roll well to not get (-) results for those, teetering on the edge. One more thing might tip the scales (the other kind of scales) enough to win the hex. Air attack? Leader change in the Inf Rgt?

OK boys and personages lacking a Y chromosome, here is your philosophy lesson for the day. You may think that what follows is history, but philosophy transcends all the arts and sciences. Now you neophytes (in regards to philosophy) may think that Descarte's pronouncement that "I think, therefor I am" is the most profound formulation in all of the history of philosophy. Be careful about that cause you don't want to mix history and philosophy. A play was written, and a movie based on that filmed. The setting is a preparatory school. The movie is British (but as an anthropologist I cannot ignore those "people") but singularly insightful. It is titled "The History Boys". An auditor or dean verbally tests one of the students as follows: "What have you learned from history"?
The reply was immediate "History!? What's to learn from history?" "It's just one f***ing thing after another."

What more do we need to know?
