JocMeister: It is indeed HMS Mauritius as obvert correctly pointed out. That ship went down last turn.

obvert: Thanks! I will always try find turn related pics in this AAR. The give more "personal" feeling on things ongoing.

No turns this morning and heading out soon to coach girls football team. It is somewhat refreshing to have 20 youngsters running around!

I'm a coach as well, and it is fun. Baseball now and used to do basketball as well.

Hope the weather is okay and you're not having the massive rainstorms we're getting here.

Oh.. that fun things to do. I'am coaching ages 5-8. We started with 7 girls last year and now we have 40 in total.

Enjoying this stuff more than playing myself! :)

Both of my own daughters play football as well so that is an definate bonus.

The weather is actually good back here. Sunny and +9c. Really cannot complain since it is mid october!

I coached my oldest for a couple years when she was young. Of course, here we call it "soccer". I can't believe how old your girls are every time I see them on FB!

Brave effort for little gain. Japanese really seem to have major naval presence around Malaya. It seems the peninsula is their top priority.

December 29th - 30th 1941

The closing days of december for allied side were not from "Best of" category.

Allied destroyer TF was ambushed near Davao. I assume these planes did fly from KB itself.

If that is the case than main carrier fleet is moving towards Borneo.

Looking at the bright side of things at least I have confirmed where some of his carriers are patrolling.

It was worth the shot to see whether he had actually screwed his movement orders. This time around that was not the case.

Japanese had begun the invasion operation at Cotabato. He is definately trying to sneak into Cagayan more swiftly.

The orders have been given and next BC Repulse and heavy cruisers are trying intercept enemy ships at Mersing.

There are at least BB Haruna, BB Kongo and some other surface combat vessels in that area. I moved some Buffalo fighters into Singapore to provide LRCAP but that will be leaky.

The bad news is that Mini KB elements are still in that region. Oh well.. sometimes you have roll the dice.

Bases captured by Japanese: Taiping and Tavoy.

Oooh, nice work on the enemy TFs.

Seems your opponent is playing a bit careless operating outside his LBA and without proper naval protection?

That ambush went well and nice bonus on scoring some transports with those destroyers.

Basically I have now lost mostly surface combat ships that I can afford lose. Those were out dated.

He actually is moving under LBA cover but I think he had some "victory disease" after knocking few ABDA ships out.

As he stated I think he thought HMS Repulse was near Balikpapan were it was spotted few days earlier. The whole idea on the operation was move full speed to the other "end of DEI" before he actually had the chance to get better intel. Sometimes you win some and sometimes you lose some...

I'am trying to keep him somewhat honest with his offensive operations and hopefully buy some time.

Nice work!

This happened to me in my first PBEM against Dan Nichols. A blind-side by the full weight of Force-Z where I lost a bunch of stuff including 4 CA! Yuck.

Japanese TFs are very poorly organized to start the game, also. If the player doesn't change those up they are slow and have lots of ships in there that shouldn't be in dangerous waters (like the AS in the TF above, and the lack of anything bigger than an SC in the second one). I also feel too many players go in without trying to set up deceptive 'false' invasions first to assess responses. Keep using it against him.

Yup. Touche that LBA bombers managed to damage Prince of Wales a couple weeks earlier.

I do have to agree with you than again many players don't try hard enough to intercept those TF's. Not saying I'am above aggressive level but I do take risk when I feel it is worth the effort.

When playing with 2 day turns you must remember that if you manage to delay something even for 3-4 turns than that means full week in game time. Things are somewhat diffrent when playing with 1 day turns and actually propably would not have done HMS Repulse had the cycle being that.

After that Malaya blitzkrieg I'am hoping that I can hold out there until late January 1942 or early february 1942. It might possible but not taking any bets on that issue.

Another quiet turn around the map.

Singapore receives another turn of visits from the Japanese bombers. The AA crews are kept busy.

In Luzon allied troops have now moved into Manila (pic). After thinking about the situation it was wise to abandon Clark Field.

Whether this is a good move well that remains to be seen.

Elsewhere the preparations are continuing as planned...

A turn that you summarize with "You win some and you lose some...".

Allied troops launched two counterstrikes at Kuala Lumpur and and at Cagayan. I really should have done the Kuala Lumpur offensive turn earlier since it failed miserably.

The Imperial Guards division arrived along with some other elements. This ofcourse means more troubles ahead at Malaya peninsula...

Ground combat at Kuala Lumpur (49,79)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 19327 troops, 151 guns, 94 vehicles, Assault Value = 654

Defending force 33428 troops, 277 guns, 125 vehicles, Assault Value = 1085

Allied adjusted assault: 153

Oh well.. good reminder to be more decisive with the operations. Not everything went bad last turn since Philippine troops managed to gain a victory at Cagayan.

Ground combat at Cagayan (79,89)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 10313 troops, 40 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 347

..definately an nice victory here. You really don't get many victories with Philippine troops early on so enjoy while you can.

Next turn we will launch an counterstrike at Manila. If we succeed there than that really would be awesome. My opponent moved 11 units into the capital city.

There are 4 more units enroute and they might arrive in time or not. Despite that the orders have been given to throw enemy out of Manila...

You are doing extremely well intercepting these invasion TFs. The more you do this the more exponential his delay will become. If these are set to invade bases in succession throughout the invasion bonus period they will not only have to be replaced for the current invasion but also of the next few. The ships losses won't help him either.

Nice work!

obvert: Yup! Have to say that any capital ship losses have not been for nothing.

My opponent is not doing much in south pacific so I think he has extra transports committed to Malaya, Luzon and forthcoming DEI invasion.

January 18th - 19th 1942

The invasion of Palembang begins with overwhelming force. If the reports are correct CA Atago, CA Takao and DD Asashio (pic) are hit with mines.

However I'am not too optimistic that this is true and believe that the enemy cruisers are at least fine.

We have talked about the risks and the diffrence using 2 day turns and the battle of Manila is very good example on this issue.

The first allied assault recieves 1:1 odds thus we launch again 2nd day. This is something I did not want to happen but it was close for sure.

Now looking at the 1st odds I really should have used shock assault there. Oh well... this will speed up the enemy progress in Luzon.

The Commonwealth forces did not fair any better in Malaya. We did manage to hold the first assault but the second day was too much.

You can see how close the dice rolls were here too.

The Palembang was captured by IJA 21st and 38th Division.

He truly was committed on seizing that objective.

ABDA cruiser TF engaged enemy ships at Palembang.

I would have prefered to have found those transports but I guess this is better than nothing.

The bad news is that IJN carrier based bombers found some of the damaged and well the outcome was obvious.

A quiet turn in terms of combat action around the map.

IJN carrier pilots sunk the crippled USS Houston near Toboali.

Few other merchant ships sailing in the DEI region are sunk as well.

The whole japanese carrier fleet is spotted south of Singapore.

This means that the IJN is going to cruise around Java in next couple of days.

I have to be honest and sometimes hate the game since there really is not much you can do about it. This is the blitzkrieg a'la pacific all over again.

This in game picture showing what types of ships are reported of being sunk in these naval battles.

I doubt the screen is more than 65% accurate so reality might be somewhat diffrent.

However the intelligence screen indicates 60 enemy vessels lost thus far in the war.
