In my experience, a sub that's moving (traveling between its patrol zone hexes) is more likely to intercept & engage a target than one that's sitting in a hex in 'remain on station' mode. Don't use waypoints, use the 'set patrol zone' button. Time at sea is greatly extended, & damage-accrual is greatly reduced, if the 2 or 3 locations of the patrol-zone are within 1 or 2 hexes of each other, and the time spent at each is set to 1 day. When the sub has only enough fuel to return to its home-port, it will automatically return to base, then automatically sail back to its patrol zone. It'll also auto-rtb when it runs very low on torps, but you need to keep an eye on torp ammo. Send them back to base when torps ammo is at 1, or when gun ammo is red, or when an upgrade is due. USN subs love getting better radar, and need the better deck-gun.
