Interesting factoid for JFB's on how Japan's energy policy keeps them ultra vulnerable still!:

1941 Japan oil reserves--- 6 months
2012 Japan reserves-- 2-3 weeks!

You'd think during peace time they would have built up a reserve. But the Japanese shifted to nuclear power after the war, to reduce their dependence on energy imports and their vulnerability to SS wolfpacks and LBA of the Russian/Chinese kind. And they didn't build up a reserve, and now Japan's energy state is similar to 1945...

Before the Japanese shut down their nuclear reactors in 2011 because of the Fukushima meltdown, 25% of Japanese electricity came from nuclear power. But without nuclear power, Japan has been forced to turn to the USA and Australia, paying $15/unit of Liquified Natural Gas fracked out for $3-4 from Australia and the American Midwest. And their reserves are worse off than 1941!

And if the Excel pipeline doesn't get going Canada is going to have a real good customer lined up for export.

Unfortunately the margins on that business aren't quite as good as that. Gas production costs are only $3~$4 per mbtu but liquefaction and transport basically treble the cost by the time it gets to the end user. Margins are probably more like 30~50% rather than 500%.

Right, yes I forgot to add that about the shipping costs for LNG. But regardless the Japanese are tearing their hair out, now that they have a current account deficit and are paying billions of dollars for the benefit of North Dakota :)

Which explains why they're quietly assuming an increasing percentage of "Blood Oil" from war-torn and autocratic Middle-Eastern states too. See China, India, continental Europe and the US for other examples of countries that so act.

would be quite hard for the whole world to drive their cars around if we would only import oil from political correct countries. What would be left? Place your bets...

The wife and I were discussing nearly that very subject earlier this month, RE: electric cars. We took our electric bill and the manufacturers data on how much juice to recharge and came up with it costing $25 a day to operate the car on electricity. Not to mention that on many days the power companies are asking people to go without A/C on hot days because of the demand for power. What are they going to do when all the cars are electric also?

Nope, like it or not, we are stuck with oil for a while to come...

It depends on where you live, really.

And from a "green" perspective, in places like Vermont having a hybrid or plug-in car is greener as the grid sources of power there are more renewable, while in places like Kentucky that use coal or fossil fuels, it's actually worse than having a regular gas engine.
