Ok we can form Divisions. How exactly do you do it?

I can cntrl click a General and certain units and activate as a Division? If so how do I add more units to the Division and what is the max size of the Division?

I can cntrl click a general and certain units and have them join the general as a single Unit, is this a Division? If so what is the max size of the unit and how do you add more to it?

A division is when you have incorporated one or more brigades into the commanders counter (for lack of a better word).

So enable division command (access from the tent image), press control, select the commander, keep control pressed and select 3 brigades (this seems from my experience to be the norm), click on the + button and the individual units will disappear.

I've not had enough experience yet with ACW but I think some brigades have more elements than others, and this *might* affect how many you can add to a single commander. In any case, keep adding brigades till the green + button disappears.

If you want to change a full division, then click on the - button - unfortunately that will remove all, so make sure you add in at least one, or you will lose the division activation for that General and need to pay again

Divisions have the commander and up to 17 elements. (Brigades come in different sizes.)

IIRC, 4 artillery, 11 infantry, 2 cavalry elements was the standard. YMMV.

In fact, it seems that the best fitting for a division is :
- 11 Infantry regiments
- 1 Skirmish regiment
- 1 Cavalry regiment
- 2 light Artillery batteries
- 2 normal Artillery betteries

There may no longer be enough money in game to support divisions with so much firepower as a standard for your entire army. It remains to be seen, but my guess is at least 2 of those artillery units will have to be swapped out for infantry.

The cost does not need to be payed any more once it has been paid as long as the general has enable division button pressed on regardless on number of troops in his division. So you can remove all troops from the general and add it to him any following turn you want. Just keep in mind as long is the general designated to be division commander he will cost 4 command points regardless if his division is full or completely empty.

So there are cases when you would wish a general to be completely striped of his divisional command by repressing create division button (only available if his division is completely empty). If you however then decide to create a new division with him after that, you would pay the administrative cost.

A division with 11 regiments ? Seems a bit huge to me...

If you exchange a sharpshooter for a skirmisher, this composition is quite nice. You might want to exchange an infantry for a marine or a sailor to reduce penalties for fighting across rivers or for amphibious attacks.

And note that you can't form divisions (or corps) initially in several of the longer campaigns. That ability comes several months after the beginning of the war. (This is to take into account the disorganization of the beginning.)
