Conventional wisdom seems to be that the smartest way to build infantry is to build Militia "Brigades" of 2 elements each. Eventually, they'll train up anyway, and in the meantime they are cheaper.

But I have noticed that the Militia elements have only 450 men. Conscript and Regulars have 600 men.

When militia upgrade, are they sucking up replacements to top off those extra 150 guys?

If so, what is the cost of that?

And if that's happening, are they REALLY cheaper?

I wonder if I just didn't notice that was going on, thinking I was saving costs somehow

Thoughts?

Well, for me, conventional wisdom is noise, not wisdom. I build regular units because I want them now. Sure, if you have the time and the training officers, you might save a bit of money, but with the penalty of state bound units until they upgrade.

There’s more to it than just cheaper infantry. If you try and build regular troops early in the war, you won’t have enough regiments (perhaps only ½ - 2/3rds as many) to fill up your divisions. Both sides are racing to get to a point where they have large enough armies to withstand serious hits yet they can still fight for many more turns without being destroyed.

Small armies vanish quick under that kind of attrition war pressure, so you need to flesh out your divisions as soon as you can, after your divisions are almost filled up you can switch to building the quality stuff. I’d say by mid to late 1862 there is no real reason to still be using militia builds for your infantry regiments, by then your main armies should be pretty large.

The above is mainly a union strategy. The south has problems using this early due to a lack of training officers (they get one training officer later and perhaps even more after that I’m not sure). So the South should not build a lot of militia unless they have time to allow an army HQ unit to slowly train them up by building up their experience points (takes a looong time). Front line troops for the south should all be regular builds early in the war.

When a militia regiment upgrades to conscript all his "stats" upgrade. Attack, defence, cohesion, number of men, etc, etc. They become conscript regiment of 600 men maximun with only 450, they need to fill up using replacemnts.

The "problem" is that if you make a full division of militia regiments and it faces a regular division... it will be chewed. They are cheaper to build than regular units, but it takes a lot of time to upgrade them. In the meantime you dont want a full militia army fighting a regular army or you will loose badly.

Think of your overall strategy. In 61 you really won't be on the offensive much so build regular units where you will be on the offensive and militia everywhere
else. This gives them time to train up.

I prefer building militias and volunteers aplenty, especially in the Far West; perfect to man the forts and to snatch some vital key positions of Johnny Reb in AZ, NM, TX, IT and near the KS/MO border. Especially mounted volunteers and Jayhawkers come in handy. The Eastern Theatre, at least against the AI, I simply see as a side-show. MO/KY/TN is where I go on the offensive once I got the ability to build divisions.

Thanks for the replies!

I was hoping regulars would be better, because I also like the chrome of the regular brigades; alot of real regiments are in there, etc.

Militia probably makes sense for quick grabs and garrisons, but that's it it seems

You should... however it depends which side? AS USA I'd definitely use the option to build fast, cheap in the West and also in OH/KY/IL, where they can be trained quickly by Halleck and McClellan. If you garrison your border forts and outposts as quick as possible with mounted militia e.g. it later saves you hassles to react to any poxy CSA or Indian raid in this area. By July 61 (vs the AI) I was able to secure KS,IT,NM,AZ parts of TX, against those threats. Use the mounted volunteers or cavalry to destroy the depots in the IT that are used by the CSA.

Just remember that militia in this version of the game has a movement penalty if you move it out of its home state. Around 10%.
This will slow down any stack they are in.

Aye, but that's neglectable when you use the mounted militia, rangers and jayhawkers. It pays off in the long run. You're able to get all the posts near El Paso right from the start, cut the supplies before the rebs even send a proper TX Bde. Some argued that TX builds very strong regular Bde, but then... they'd be busy in NM, IT, AZ or TX, rather than being part of a CSA force in TN/KY or part of the ANV.

I'll do some more 'tests' to see how that works against a challenging AI. I'd still use it against a human opponent...
