The Distant Worlds universe has been my home for the last few years and I have really enjoyed my stay but it looks like I may be boarding the next ship and heading home at last ...

Looks like fun

Time will tell, but Stardock has come up with some good stuff.

That is awesome and a must buy. I loved GalCiv2. No 4x will ever compare to Distant Worlds, but GalCiv2 was the second best, all other 4xs are nothing compared to these two.

I had not heard anything on the internet about GalCiv3 coming until you posted that. Unless I missing something, I think this announcement comes as a surprise to many of us.

Between this and Brother against Brother, 2014 is going to be awesome!

I was looking at a Stardock forum and someone implies that it will have Multiplayer. I hope this is not code for "the AI will be dumbed down."

Bit underwhelmed. I'm getting really tired of overproduced CGI trailers and promos. Give me some screenshots, gameplay footage, anything that actually reflects what will be the final product.

That trailer might as well be a promo for Crysis 4 or the next Mass Effect. Eck...

http://www.galciv3.com/

quote:

The whole point of Galactic Civilizations III is to live up to what our fans are hoping for without screwing up the core gameplay that make the franchise one of the highest-rated strategy series in history. So we’re adding hexes, because they make better maps. We’re putting new stuff out on the map besides anomalies, because it adds depth to how you explore and colonize the galaxy. Diplomacy and non-violent paths to victory have always been key aspects of Galactic Civilizations, so we’re adding tons more cool stuff to diplomacy (both mechanically and on the AI side) and adding more ways to interact beyond pushing your influence bubble into enemy territory.

And, of course, Galactic Civilizations III has fully featured online multiplayer. Yes, we heard you on that one.

It's also 64-bit only, allowing for much larger memory usage than standard 32-bit games.

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/10/15/space-glee-galactic-civilizations-iii-announced/

quote:

The aforementioned 64-bittiness is explained thusly: “The move to 64-bit architecture heralds a new era of game development at Stardock,” said Derek Paxton, vice president of Stardock Entertainment. “The technology allows players to experience a level of graphical detail and on-screen activity unprecedented in large-scale strategy PC games. It dramatically increases the size and scope of the maps, and opens the door for modders to add a virtually unlimited amount of new content to the game.”

Early FAQ
http://www.galciv3.com/game/faq

Some points from the FAQ
* Requires 64-bit Windows 7 or 8 and DirectX 10 or 11 (no support for DX9)
* No copy protection (I guess they don't count Steam)
* Will have a campaign
* Multiplayer
* Sophisticated ship design
* Uses hexagon maps

The trailer doesn't really matter, the pedigree of those producing it does, I have been there since the beginning with Galciv back in 03 and have only ever been impressed with the commitment of Brad Wardell and the GalCiv team (wonder if CariElf is still about), that was and still is the only set of games that the AI for me does what it should, Wardell is really is good with AI, does not go down the cheat route regards making it more difficult with extra this and that gifted to the AI, just pure logic routines in different strengths, I have high hopes for this knowing only too well the misty history of GalCivII.

Boomer, just as Darkspire said - if you knew how great GC2 was, this advertisement does not matter.

So in your defense, I agree. The advertisement makes it look like just another mediocre 4x game.

Hang in there and lets see how things come along.

Yeah, I played GC1 and GC2. They were great, especially GC2. My critique wasn't aimed at the franchise itself, only its marketing. Piss poor marketing from game pubs is the standard fare these days, so it's nothing unusual. But just because someone criticizes someone like Michael Bay, doesn't mean they also have to hate action movies... just poorly made ones.

Then again, I know how cold and dry some strategy game trailers can be. I just think there's a better way to promote your product than whiz bang explosions and CGI hi-drama fests with dramatically rendered cutscenes of space commanders looking grimly into their battle interface screens and emoting typical Hollywood gibberish with cool buzzwords like 'final stand', 'heroic sacrifice', or 'we will not allow them one more step.' Save that garbage for the 15 yr old Call of Duty kids who like to fantasize about war while guzzling energy drinks at 3 in the morning.

The trailer is impressive, I played some Gal Civ II, quite enjoyable! I'll wait for some comprehensive reviews.

Judging from all of you really digging the trailer, the only assumption I can make is that I must really be getting too old for this.

I have been playing GalCiv since the OS/2 days. I am really looking forward to this one. The Stardock team tends to support the GalCiv series really well.

The Stardock site says it could be over a year from release!! I incorrectly assumed that the notification meant maybe a "by XMAS" type of release. Oh well, until then.

No such thing as a 'must buy' from Stardock following the Elemental catastrophe. After that, any pedigree status was instantly reduced to mongrel. Not to mention that, DW excepted, every space 4X of the last few years (and there have been quite a few) has been either a disappointment or a disaster.

This time I'm waiting for the reviews. And probably the end of the DLC run as well.

How was Elemental a disaster? I am not saying you are wrong, but I played that when it first came out and it is still supported and has updates and I thought it had a decent sized following. Has something changed?

Your comment about all other Space 4x being a disaster (other than Distant Worlds, which I think is the best overall game of all time), I agree 100%. I have tried ALL of them and none of them measure up to DW or Gal Civ 2.

Elemental was a total disaster when it first released, IIRC they ended up giving the expansion for free that those had paid for it, it very nearly sunk Stardock, they sold everything but the kitchen sink to stay afloat, I was under the impression that GCIII would never see the light of day due to legal bits and pieces from that period. Hence I was beside myself when I saw the announcement, Stardock, the forums and the constant interaction between the two are one of the main reasons GalCiv was so enjoyable to me, I remember asking CariElf to put a music player in GCI so I could listen to other music and it came out in a patch That and many other things were incorporated into the games from discussions on the forums, one of the friendliest places I have ever visited on the net.

GalCiv2 is a bit overrated. It has flaws, and I don't think it is even close to as fun as Distant Worlds is (both with expansions of course).

For example GalCiv2 has a long quite boring slow middle period after the initial rush to find planets and colonization. Sometimes it's just about clicking "end turn" for an endless amount of turns. On huge maps the exploration and expansion phase is longer, but I really don't like huge maps in turn-based games where it takes for ever to move your ships around.

Both games have problems with balance, but some events in GalCiv2 are devastating and not fun at all.

Still GalCiv2 is good, and I hope GalCiv3 is even better.

Elemental was a diaster. I was part of the Beta team and repeatedly told them so (along with others). Unfortunately for Stardock, they were still trying to release games through retail channels and if they did not relase by a certain date, they would not be able to have their games on shelves for another six months. So the decision was made to release as is and patch. We all know how that turned out

Fallen Entrantress was the replacement release to Elemental. This turned out much better and is a really good game. Ledendary Heros is the 1st expansion to FE and made the game even better. Had very good reviews. As I own FE and LH I can tell you if you ever wanted to play a magic based Civ game in a world recovering from a catastrophic diaster, the LH is the game for you A very different and fun experience.

You just summed up the entire entertainment industry.

That's why I prefer strategy games. Trailers boring as watching snot dry, games fun as ridin' a rocket ship to Mars.

Two images of the game and interface and the diplomacy dialog. Also two ship images.
Stays very faithful to the original, but with colorful new graphics.

While I wouldn't mind a new GalCiv game, the blast from the past I'd really like to see updated or redone is Imperium Galactica II. Go vote for it at GoG and we may see it available there soon.

Alpha should be out around early 2014. And every other week more info gets thrown at us (though mid December Stardock takes vacation). I'll try to keep folks updated from time to time.

Guys its just a trailer saying hey were baking GC3 and whats going on in Brads mind in his little universe he created. Take it with a grain of salt. Its what starts getting peoples attention and then they slowly give out more info once things get ironed out ie alpha, beta, release, yada yada... They do have some crazy good leadership that Brad brought in with all that Impulse money. Best thing they ever did selling it off and getting back to software and games.

I would also like an updated IG II. I would pay good money for it.

Oh and one last thing. Yes Elemental started out really bad. Why- Brad did goof ie Impulse sucked up most the finances ie software division dried up ie like Fences, game division dried up and most experience and resources went into Impulse due the crazy money it was making. So after firing lots of people Brad had 2 choices, A. Stardock goes digital Distribution route and scraps both the game and software division or B. Sell Impulse.

We at the end of the day Brad wanted to make games and tech so they sold it to Gamespot. This was a good move, Rehired everyone that got canned (with one exception that found another job elsewhere). 2 free expansions to say they were sorry, Hired up crazy good leadership and workers, made a new company that will develop engine for RTS called Nitrous, investment fund for new companies to make games, and GC3! I don't know how much money Brad got May 2011 from GS but its crazy...
