This is probably the least "historical" version of the game (little houserules) that I've played and altough there has been little action, I consider this battle to be very exiting. Since there is no housrule on bombardments of China, I'm prepping my air force to start bombard the Chinese cities. I will focus on cities that I will be unlikely to grasp. If I can take out some HI and LI, this will cripple the Chinese effort considerably. From Port Arthur I had already operating three sentai of Ki-21-Ic bombers that hit the Chinese front in Northern China. In the meantime these have withdrawn out of range. I'm not sure what to do here. I might move the entire air division to China, or only transfer some of the sentai. In Chiang Mai I have three more sentai of Ki-21-IIa which can reach Kunming. There we can do quite some damage. However, the main targets for the 3rd air division will lie in Burma. The main effort has to come from the 4th air division though. This unit is still being build up. Once the Chinese front has been stabilized (I'm on the offensive in the north and there is still a battle for Wenchow taking place), I will start my bombardments. The first attack will be a suprise all out attack and will only take place once I have a little more units. Below you find a current OOB of my bomber force...

Port Arthur - 2nd Air Division
58th Sentai: 27 Ki-21-Ic
61st Sentai: 27 Ki-21-Ic
68th Sentai: 42 Ki-27b
78th Sentai: 36 Ki-27b
7th Sentai: 27 Ki-21-Ic
85th Sentai: 42 Ki-27b

Canton - 4th Air Division
45th Sentai: 27 Ki-21-IIa
10th I.F. Chutai: 12 Ki-27b

Chiang Mai (Thailand) - 3rd Air Division
12th Sentai: 27 Ki-21-IIa
60th Sentai: 27 Ki-21-IIa
62nd Sentai: 27 Ki-21-IIa
1st Sentai: 42 Ki-43-Ic (Rangoon)
11th Sentai: 42 Ki-43-Ic (Rangoon)

I'm moving the 4th Air Division to Hankow. From here the Ki-21-Ic and Ki-21-IIa bombers can hit the Industrial hart of the Chinese industry directly...

Khyberbill retreated a lot of Dutch units to the mountains of Bandoeng. So far my attempts to drive them out with 900 AV continue to fail. Congrats to Khyberbill One of the main problems is the 21 Resources and 21 light industry located at Bandoeng. Consequently, Khyberbill can resupply his units and continue to increase fortification levels to 1 after every deliberate attack of the Allied units. A similar suprise is waiting for me at Mindanao and also Christmas Island and Cocos islands lie waiting for me.
The Japanese supreme command is fed up with this! From tomorrow the Japanese Air Force will carry out city bombardment attacks on Bandoeng in order to destroy its LI.

Ground combat at Bandoeng (50,100)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 31058 troops, 328 guns, 201 vehicles, Assault Value = 944

Defending force 24777 troops, 257 guns, 106 vehicles, Assault Value = 495

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 0

Japanese adjusted assault: 525

Allied adjusted defense: 541

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 0)

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+)
Attacker:

I think resources stop producing once there is an enemy LCU in the hex. But he probably has many weeks of resources stock-piled.

A single airfield supply hit, by a 250kg bomb, will destroy at least a days worth of production from the LI. It is probably more effective to keep hitting the airfield and just be patient.

Bombarding the airfield is probably the best way to go, but I'm also evaluating how successfull a bombing China campaign is going to be before I'm fully going to commit there...

Bombing the airfield means his engineers have to repair that before building forts (and you might get supply hits).
Bombing the LI means his engineers are free to build forts - but eventually with less supplies to sustain a defence.

I myself am not sure what affects the adjusted AV of the defender most - the forts or the supply status of the units?

Since my bombers didn't hit any of the LI's, I'm going for the airfield now...

Is it me, or is HI much more easy to destroy than LI?
Several raids in China gave me 0 LI destroyed (maybe FOW) while in one run I destroyed 7 HI.

This would make sense as big factories are much easier to destroy than small local business...

Don't know about that but I have been amazed how bad the Sally is at hitting resources.

In China, I find hitting manpower and allowing the fires to damage whatever they will is most effective.

Also bombing only damages factories, whereas fires will do both damage and permanently destroy some.

For Bandoeng stick to airfield.

Now I was refering to China. My strategic bombardment of Chinese LI has started. AFter a few runs, the Ki-21-IIa's starting to hit stuff.
At Bandoeng I'm indeed going for the airfield bombardment. Moreover, this gives some more supplies here, which is convenient as I'm expanding the HI at Batavia and Soerabaja somewhat. Java produces oil, resources and supply and therefore is the perfect location to expand the HI. Especially if the Allied do not capture it...

Bombing the LI and HI in China I think has worked for me in my game against witpqs. I have committed pretty much the entire Japanese air force to this task. As much as possible I tried to concentrate on a target with as many bombers as possible and bomb it until LI and HI were fully damaged. On the mouse over, they never show fully damaged so once it gets down to about 10% of what shows, it is probably enough. One thing I would do over would be to put some on bombing the airfields as well. I ran into a few cities with forts and it slowed me down. I also flew at 6k. This seemed to increase the hit rate. If there was flak, I did not worry because it uses supplies and is a good indication of when they were out of supplies. Provided you do not run into Allied Fighters, the crews will get better quickly. If you run into fighters, take your lumps, replenish with raw recruits and know those flight ops just cost the Allies valuable supplies. Make sure the groups are maxed out on pilots. In Nov 1943, I still fly every day in China (mostly ground attacks now) with 10% set to rest. It takes a while but it will help. You also need to plan to ship supplies to China because you will not benefit from captured HI or LI.

Enjoying this AAR. Thanks for posting!

Thanks for following!

Slowly my Ki-21-Ic and Ki-21-IIa bombers start to hit stuff. So far I'm only hitting Chungking and since I'm flying from Hankow I can use a 42 squadron Ki-43-Ic's as a fighter cover. I haven't seen any enemy fighters yet and I'm not expecting much resistance as already quite some P40s from the AVG were shot down by Zero fighters.

The Allies knew that I was coming for Horn Island (Khyberbill mentioned in our email conversation). While the invasion fleet, escorted by the Kongo and Haruna is still miles away, Khyberbill send in a mixed Dutch/American surface task force to intercept. Right at this moment KB turn up from the southeast, where it chose a path far away from most Allied submarines. Apparently it wasn't spotted. To bad that she didn't get more kills. Nevertheless, tomorrow there is a new day...

With Canton Island and at Noumea I have forward bases from where patrol planes searching for enemy vessels. So far none of these were spotted, but a few days back an enemy convoy was observed that was moving from Pearl Harbor (or that general area) to Pago^2. Both at Noumea and Canton I have formed small raider squads to intercept such TFs, yet which are fast enough to run if those TFs turn out to have carrier support. The first strike worked out pretty well, although it would have been nice if there were some more Allied ships in the TF. Nevertheless this is a good reminder to Khyberbill to take major detours, which therefore limit all his activities in the far Pacific. For example the defense of Port Moresby. My troops are currently unloading there...

It is quiet in the Pacific. The Japanese 14th Army is still fighting the Allies in the mountains of Mindanao and the Japanese 16th and 25th Army are still battling the Allies at Java. The problem lies with fatigue of my troops, which are taking a rest. The 38th division arrived at Port Moresby unopposed, yet wasn't able to take the base immediately. Now the Allies are sneaking reinforcements in. I have fightercap over Port Moresby to intercept transports and my torpedobombers once in a while sink a transport. B17s raided PM for a couple of days but after I put up a fighter cap, they dissapeared pretty quickly even without scoring any hit. I'm landing lots of troops at Buna, who will march to PM and hold a path of retreat which hopefully will not be necessary for quite a while.

It is june and it seems that the war in turning alive in the Port Moresby area. The Allies have a lot of fighters in the region and have their heavy bombers in place. Occasionally also battleships make it to PM. They do not do a whole lot of damage to may troops, which still have plenty of supplies. Nevertheless taking PM without further reinforcements seems illusive. For now I'm doing nothing. KB is being upgraded and I'm saving fuel. I'm increasing my figher cap over New Guinea though. A squadron of Zeros and the first squadron of Nicks will arive at Rabaul in a few days...
