Off Fiji, RO-64 turns the tables on the hunters and sinks the DD Morris in what appears to be an ASW task force

Although Allied day air loss is shown as 1 the Allied air loss points has jumped by 34. I think this means he has lost a lot of aircraft to Ops while re-basing them, or through disbandment maybe? A couple of possibilities for this.

- When he sunk my cruisers there was a similar jump and I assumed he had pulled the bombers off his carriers; he could be returning them.

- Recce is out of date but it shows no aircraft at Chengtu. He could have withdrawn the rest of the Chinese air force.

Sub Wars

A sub attacks South of Takao and scores a dud on a big tanker. This is the first sight of a sub in this area. I will need to update my ASW.

China

Allied bombers from India strike at Kunming attackers but have no effect. My bombers do have an effect and then the ground attack takes Kunming.

Looking at my current IJA fighter builds and upgrades. I am beginning to develop a pool of Oscars and Tojos and there are few Nate groups in need of upgrade.

The 4th and 5th Sentai are big groups that upgrade to the Nick and, eventually, to night fighters so I am waiting on getting enough Nicks to do that; will probably not be before the end of November before this is done.

I have 184 Nates being used for training that need to be kept on that, with another 36 arriving at the end of September.

I have 36 Nates at Soerabaja, 30 Oscar 1a at Palembang, and 25 Oscar 1b at Rangoon being used for gaining experience on CAP. These can all be upgraded.

Also looking at fighter dispositions in China. If he has withdrawn airpower from China I can reduce my fighter presence. I reckon though that I need to keep CAP at Lanchow and Sian to protect against 4E striking from Ledo at the oil. He could, also, attack the HI at Hong Kong, Canton, Hankow, Kunming, Bangkok, Changsha. However, loss of HI there doesn't concern me as much as loss of LI and there is a lot of potential LI targets. (LI loss reduces supply, HI loss just changes when that supply is generated as fuel/oil will run out eventually).

There are three 12 point Nate groups at Mukden (that expand to big groups in 1944) so may be I will convert them to better aircraft and put them to CAP experience over Chinese industry.

IJN is much simpler, I still have to upgrade the CV aircraft to A6M5.

You can always break down a big sentai and upgrade in thirds.

The 4th is restricted isn't it? Are you expecting more action around the HI?

It seems to be permanently attached to the 21st Air Division which is not restricted (I may have bought it out I can't remember). Some of the restrictions of air headquarters seem different in this scenario.

In any case, it is currently at Chengtu and can be used in China.

Bomb the LI at Chungking. 8 LI are shown as damaged. Flak downs quite a few planes but it is noticeable that the Ki-49-IIa take no losses. Expect this is because they are armoured but may be related to having the best pilots. Will keep using the armoured planes to hit Chungking and use the unarmoured planes against troops.

Ground attack near Neikiang gets a 1:1 and does okay. Noticeable that there is a supply(-) for the Chinese even though they are only 90 miles from Chungking. Looks like no supply is getting out to any Chinese forces away from the cities.

Allied C-47 losses have stopped so may be they are no longer lifting supply into China.

I-170 engages a task force containing the Warspite, Arizona, West Virginia and Maryland near Pearl Harbour. It puts two torpedoes into the CL Trenton and sinks it

. These BB were engaged in bombarding Noumea so are probably heading back to Pearl for some minor repair work.

Trying to decide where to put my carriers and that means looking at possible threats.

The biggest worry I have is a strike at Java, Sumatra or the use of BB to bombard Darwin and take it quickly.

Burma would be a land campaign at this time, I don't think he can risk a strike to Moulmein etc. this early.

If he attacks in the Marshalls I'm not going to risk assets.

If he attacks in the Solomons or towards Rossel Island he can but there are enough air bases that it would have to be a major op, or he slowly island hops under LBA.

So I think putting the CV in the Banda Sea might work. From there it is four days to help Rossel Island, 1 day to help Darwin, or 4 days to South Sumatra.

This does leave the Aleutians exposed but they are quite well dug-in.

Lots of Minekaze class APD have been upgraded and now have Type 13 Radar (air radar), they have a top speed of 29, reasonable AA and ASW but have a short endurance of 2500. The only other ships with radar at the moment are the Shokaku and Zuikaku. Is it worth using the APD as escort for the slower CVs?

Been looking at fuel efficiency of various escorts. The Ansyu xPB seems pretty hopeless. So I intend to replace these by using DMS and Mutsuki and Fubuki class DD. The xPB will be used as pickets instead. The To'su PB is good so will continue to use that. Also I need to make sure all my sub-chasers are doing useful things as they are relatively cheap.

PP

Two damaged divsions from China have been de-restricted and, once recovered, will be sent to add to defenses. Probably one to Sumatra and one to act as a mobile reserve in the Rabaul area.

At "A" I attacked and drove the defense back. I had 3 Recon regiments and an infantry brigade on reserve
(pursuit). I expected the defense to fall back to "X" and to be able to pursue across the river. If,
instead, they fell back East I expected my armour would not be able to pursue them the full hex and I could then redirect them across the river. What has happened is the recon units are now stuck in hex "B" and the infantry is half way there and will take 6 more days to arrive. Recon reports 50000 Chinese in the hex so, even without supplies, he probably will attack and smash my recon regiments. Most, if not all, of the Chinese are units that have been defeated and retreated at least once so are probably not in the best of shape.

At "C" I attacked hoping to drive the defense back and open the road to "B", but the defense turned out to be 3 strong corps and the air strikes had done little damage.

Depending what he does, it is still possible I can trap the 10 units.

HI - 616,640 - which is fine, considering how much of the stuff from HI has been saved (engines, armaments, vehicles).

Supply - 2,513,440 according to Tracker. A lot lower than I like but currently saving at a rate of about 5000 a day. It is a constant exercise to send supply out to areas but Burma is the only theatre suffering from shortfalls. However, almost all theatres have occasional problems.

Everything left Fenton.

I hadn't planned to hold it and had only moved a division there because I had an opportunity to destroy three armoured regiments.

If he pushes on and sieges Darwin then I am thinking of landing reinforcements in Wyndham and seeing if I can take Katherine or Daly Waters by surprise to isolate and eliminate the attackers at Darwin.

The Allies are taking ops losses from transport planes, 1 or 2 most days. I don't see many transports in Ledo so I think he may be using them to maintain supply for his push in Australia. Presumably, it wouldn't be too hard to fly them from Cloncurry.

I probably won't do it. However, I'm not sure whether it would surprise or not. The real problem is that he would get at least 4 days warning and that would be long enough for his airpower to do a lot of damage.
