I hit Ise with 16x1000 lbsders while at sea...none of the hits showed penetrating damage. Is there any serious likelihood she can survive??!! The same strike evidently sunk Aoba with 2x1000.

I can beat that. After a carrier battle in the North Pacific, my American carrier chased Ise southwards for nearly a week. Out of torpedo's, they threw bomb after bomb at her. Ise just didn't care.

Chances are she'll be in the yards for quite some time though. Chances are system damage is very high, and the Ise is probably missing a great number of secondary weapons.

If fires are high, that could do it regardless of sys and flt.  I lost Lexington to that, despite otherwise low damage.  Fires were > 90 at the time, with the others < 20.

Yes, there is. Obviously Aoba and Ise are vastly different ships. Ise has greater armor, so those bomb hits might have done only external damage. Even so, there might be a lot of it, and there might be significant fires. She might suffer from various weapons and radars knocked out, and flooding. If significant fires got going that would be the most dangerous factor. even if she survives, which is certainly a great possibility, she might be deemed by her owner to require significant yard time to be made ready for further operations.

I have found that it takes approximately 25+ 1000 pounders to "sink" a Yamato class.

1000 pounders will penetrate an armored cruiser's deck armor.

While they won't penetrate most BB deck armor, they will destroy deck mounted devices (accumulating system damage as well) and start fires.

Maximizing either System or Fire damage will sink a vessel just as effectively as maximizing Floatation damage.

16 hits should be very close to enough to sink the Ise. Lots depends on how the crew deals with the damage.

So the conclusion is yes, she could readily be still afloat making 20kts, but she will likely be in the yard for +3 months .. more likely 9 months

the likely hood of ise surviving is good... unless fires somehow broke out... when i went through my ordeal with mind_messing ise had 35 systems 5 flood and 16 engine damage approx... to sink these bb's you have to get all your eggs into one basket and get all the hits in one day so the fires can do the damage.... if not your bombs wont do much. in ise's state i was still even able to put holes into some of his cve's.. i just turned around and sailed straight for him. Jap bb's seem to somehow just absorb the bombs. you have to remember.. jap bb's were built with long range fighting in mind(the pacific is calmer then the atlantic) ... so they took into consideration diving shells when they were being built so the deck armor is pretty decent.

Just recently had a TF invading Palembang get hammered by the remaining Wirraways and Swordfish in the area. For some reason, those small air attacks(about 4 of them total and they were unescorted) eluded all of my CAP. Unsure how they did that with my two CAP squadrons posted at 21k and 11k. End result, Ise took 2 torps and the damage was minimal (4 major eng and 3 major float) along with about twice that in regular damage. The Ise has proven to be quite resilient.

As an aside, Shokaku and Akagi each took 3 torps and are both heading to drydock for some rather serious repairs. Shokaku has over 40 in major flotation damage... yuck. Talk about taking the wind out of my sails on this attack...

They eluded your CAP because it was in the stratosphere. Only the 11k CAP had any chance. Torp bombers usually come in at 5k or less. They scooted in right under your fighters.

Ahhhh Thanks Hans!

For future settings, what do you recommend for the CVTF CAP settings? Assuming at least 2 active carriers.

P.S. I did notice most of the torp attacks occurred at 7k. I assumed the 11k CAP would handle this well enough. I was wrong :/

layer your cap... i know it sounds silly... but its what i do.. Set anything protecting your cv's to range zero... then layer them from 5000 to 15000 feet in increments of 5000 feet. Also i set my squadrons to 100% and i have to permanent squadrons only for escorting the bombers.

In the original WITP she could take a million 1000lb bomb hits and have 10 sys damage, likewise IJN CAs and 500lb bombs......

hmm...all a little disappointing considering how little the US BBs seem capable of absorbing. In any case there were substantial fires reported and all hits in 2 raids same day. When the new day dawns I will report back...I should have good sighting barring a weather thing.

It's not like we(Japan) have a fleet of unsinkable BBs, pontius :) Fuso, Yamashiro, one other plus the Ise of course. 4 tough BBs vs the Allied juggernaut guarantess nothing !

P.S. The Nagatos come close but do not match the armor of the Ise.

The highest I set cap is 15k. I normally set some at 15k to handle the escorts and the bulk at 10k to handle the bombers.

Wow, talk about the mists of original WITP time, but I think I posted, maybe under a different account then, that I hit Mutsu in drydock with 817 500-lb bombs in 1945 playing the AI and she was fine. In WITP if you didn't have torpedoes you didn't kill BBs. The addition of so much fire-influenced damage is a great change in AE.

The key on these ships is how many superstructure hits occur. Pretty hard to sink without torps though. IME 1 in 4 to 1 in 5 hits are superstructure that cause fire and system damage. If you get enough fires going, the ship will sink.

Well, that is the sort of paradox as if she takes massive sys damage or burns but survives then the yard time will not be too bad-even with some damaged guns. It is flotation damage that really puts BBs in the yard for months on end and the 1,000 pound bombs won't do hardly any flotation damage. So either she burns up and sinks or it is not too bad for the Ise in the long run. Now, a couple of torpedo hits could put her out of work for six months.
