The fall of Bucarest. The city had been weakened by the previous turn attacks.

This turn, the Axis had the choice of who went first. It did not choose to go first, because except here in Bucarest, the situation did not require it. There was the hope that the turn would end with the allies, putting the initiative markers on the 0 box, which would let the axis reroll for initiative in May/June or July/August, where it is belived to be of outmost importance: the allies will certainly be in full offensive in good weather, and it seems smart to have the means for preventing a deadly double allied move then...

The cost for this: the almost certain loss of Bucarest. Indeed, if there had been one more unit in Bucarest, the final roll would have been 18, and Bucarest would not have fallen this turn. But then wouldn't the Russians have committed the HQ, for a result of 19, capturing the city anyway ?

So its difficult to have regrets on that choice.

But that's WiF... lost of tough choices!

After the fall of Bucarest, Russia opens up the way south. Few units are there to stop them, but getting through the Carpatians is not yet done.

The Russians do another attack, this time in the southern part of the front.
Once more, the result isn't really conclusive! At this speed, it will take years to reach Berlin! Something more definitive has to be done!

With the ongoing bad weather, the western allies take a naval action and prepare a large offensive on Italy. Possibly, the weather could be fine on the next impulse (50%) in the Mediterranean area.

This will be spoilt by the axis choice of a pass action (which actually did not change anything: the turn would have ended up anyway.)

Italy contemplated the idea of sortying its fleet, but the pass action seemed a better choice after all!

Anyway, this little story will have cost the allies a hefty price in oil! Its good that they have plenty! And actually, never enough!

There was no spring. In but a week, it seemed that summer had come. The allies were waiting and ready for that change. Many supplies accumulated during the past months flew to the army, navy and air force. This would cost a hefty price in oil, but was had to be done had to be done ! First, the British navy sailed in concert with the US navy : there was no surprise : the invasion of Italy had been postponed, not canceled ! Another fleet entered the North sea, carrying a few troops whose objective had not been disclosed, even to them.

Unlike other turns before, I will not post screenshots after the resume.
This turn promises to be well filled, with many actions.

The allies have the initiative, which cannot be contested.

The weather roll is fine everywhere, with a 90% of being fine again in the North Temperate area next impulse.

The USA and CW have both taken combined action and played an offensive chit. That alone should be problematic for the German. Next impulse may see another offensive chit used, depending on the situation. Its almost a certainty for the USA.

An offensive is preparing in the north sea as we can see here. It is not a trivial invasion: up to seven units can invade.

Italy has not been forgotten.

This invasion has the global strength of more than half the Italian army, which is spread.
This counts reinforcements some of which might be sunk because by definition, reinforcemnts won't land until the second impulse. The first wave itself should nevertheless be sufficient to keep a hold in Italy should things go bad.

Since this is a combined, Italy has no chance to interfere with the invasion, except on the beaches.

Even in the China sea, something is up.
This is obviously a smaller scale, but likewise it won't be messed with.

The Americans have the additional chance that the Imeperial Navy had to return to base to refuel this (they were on 0), and that there was not enough fuel for all Japanese ships.

The target of the invasion is yet undisclosed, but there is a good chance it could be Japan itself if a soft landing spot with a nearby port can be found.

The ground strike spree disorganized 26 German units.
This will be a severe restriction when Germany will want to reorganize its line after the oncoming assault.

In addition, the strikes were not nice to the axis air forces.
Considering that the combined allied fighters are already more numerous than the axis ones, this will not help for the oncoming turns.

The first attack is in France, in the direction of Paris.
It succeeds well enough, especially when one cosiders that more than half of the German units in the vicinity are disorganized.

The fifth attack is an air drop in the netherlands.
It succeeds beyond hope and threatens the core of the Ruhr! Unfortunately I messed up my screenshots!

To backup the paradrop, there are two invasions on the coast. Both succeed.

The second landing in the Netherlands.
Once again I failed to take a screenshot of the last British invasion, in Denmark.
Depending on the objectives, this threatens Northern Germany (with an joining to the forces in the Netherlands), or it may attempt to conquer Denmark.

The last invasion was in Southern Japan.
It succeeds well enough to warrant a permanent toehold in Japan.

Within less than two weeks, the British landed in Denmark and Netherlands, threatening he core of Germany, and putting its whole defense off balance: no significant troops are readyly available in these area, which are protected by second rate troops: reservists and militia. The British also continue their previous push toward Paris, and they reach the suburbs. Still, they are not in a position to assault it : numerous German troops still hold the area.

In the south, the Americans succeed in landing in Italy, but they botch one of their three attempts, where all participating troops are decimated. This loss will prevent an early assult on Rome, which was the ultimate target. Still, holding Bari, a port, will let supplies and reinforcements flow.

In Japan, the Americans also succeed in establishing a beachhead on the island of Kyushu. This is certainly no good news for Japan. Still, Japan can consider itself lucky that no merchant ship was again found, despite the large amount of American ships in the China sea.

In China, in keeping with their strategy, the Chinese continue to advance to cut the Japanese supplies.

France, Netherlands and Denmark at the start of the axis impulse.
Clearly, the situation will not let Germany much choice: it will likely have to take a land action!
Also note that most of the German air power is depleted. While the allies don't have a lot of planes left, they are in a better position than the German in this area. This shows the density of the action in this first impulse.
Also, while it is not clearly apparent, within the 23 German corps present in France, 9 are disorganized.

Italy at the start of the axis impulse 1.

It is sufficient to rememeber how the invasion of France began to see that this small start may grow indeed very fast.

Japan at the start of the first axis impulse in May 44.

The americans have chosen this spot because it is the only one that can't be reached in time by Japanese units in Japan. Strtegically, it is actually nowhere: it doesn't threaten the production centers, and indeed their is still a long way to go ; nor doesn't it threaten any objective. On the other hand, it was accessible precisely for these reasons!
And it is way better to have a place in Japan that always have to rely on the fleet, especially when it will come to air power. Of course, this will require conquering other places than mountains, and this is not yet achieved!

One of the problems tha Americans also see coming is the possible repatriation of Japanese units from China, which would make the conquest of Japan quite difficult!

Japan sortites its fleet. If the search suceeds, they expect to inflict large losses to the invading transports and retard the next invasion by many months.

If the search fails, they will have the satisfaction of bringing Yamamoto and additional troops safely home, exactly on the required spot, Kagoshima, which is obviously the American target.

This time the forces meet, and there is no significant surprise.

The Ameriacn fly some additional land air, both fighters and bombers.

Overall, the air forces are roughly equal, although the US have more bombing factors and have a large advantage in AA.

Unseen here is the support of the Singapore British fleet of 18 vessels, led by 5 battleships but no carrier (they are stuck in Europe.)
