Found a bit of time to work on my next small map scen

Way to go Andy !!! I can sense it. The wet, oppressive, smell of flowers and decay in the deepest black of a dripping, hot and humid, jungle night. The gold-tooth smiling countenance of a Ghurka with his Kukri bringing fear and loathing to the soldier in his foxhole. Death in the fetid, fecund, spleandor of the jungle.

You gonna do a special Bn OOB for this one? Looking forward to seeing it, whatever it is.

Ciao. J

This is where is up to so far its 1 year scen jan 44 to Dec 44

Its a straight win onpints scen

I need to do a lot more work on it and the AI has not even been started yet

I think you can see the shape of what I am trying to achieve

Comments welcome not going to start on the Ai until I get the base list finished

At present this is a real draft of what the finished article will look like s lots of work required

The scenario is in 2 parts and might be better as two shorter scenarios still playing with it.

1. Can the XV Corps hold on to act as anvil for the advancing 14th Army or will the combined 28th/15rd IJA Armies act as an Anvil for 33rd Army coming up from Moulmien.

2. When reinforced post Overlord can the allies late in the scenario take Sumatra/Malaya by Amphib assault.

Allies are actually outnumbered on the ground but have the edge in the air and late in the scenario will have an edge in ships.

The Scenario is at Brigade/Regiment level there are no Divs on map apart from the 3 Chinese ones

Each Div is split to component Divs/Bdes with Div level assets concetrated into the Div HQ to control and minimise thenumber of counters.

Symon I decided against Bn as the map scale was just to big.

Would need to be a 15 mile hex before I would go that low as the standard counter (also to total nighmare that is the British ORBAT with Bns moving in and out of Bdes would have driven me nuts and made the scen take 10 months to build !!!)

This definitely sounds interesting, looking forward to have playable AI.

And I think regiment level is right, like Andy said the scale is too big for Battalions.

LOL, would have driven me to nightmares, too . Understand dividing divions up into Regt/Brig slices; that's as far down as we go, too, for infantry units. The Div unit is a HQ unit and I make my sub units Restricted Temp to Div HQ.

Was wondering mostly about div-arty. We have had a grest deal of success in peeling div-arty out of top level units and expressing them as the actual organic arty Bns, beholden to Div HQ. That degree of graininess allows for some interesting combat situations; but I realize you know all about unit posture and individual orders.

We approach the combat thingy from a manual, H2H perspective. Understand that you have to approach it from its interaction with the AI. It's all good. I was just wondering. Ciao. J

If I was doing it purely for H2H or PBEM I would probably separate out Div Arty as well but the AI will not handle it that well

So for most Divs

its an HQ Unit with all the Div level assets then 3 Bdes (not Bde groups) the only other unit I carved out because of differential movement would be Div Cav, Tank or Recon units

Not sure how it will play out yet I need to test it the other option would be to have a gun only CRA 'counter' but I am trying to avoid that but its certainly a possibility.

Andy -

All of your small map scenarios have outstanding potential for learning AE and the sheer enjoyment of a fast paces scenario.

I have not yet played Mountbatten's Folly, but will get to it soonest (am currently setting up for a new Babes 28Cv12 campaign).

Most recently, I replayed Burma - an excellent refresher on that difficult campaign.

My respect to you and your work - always First Class.

Mac

Mac thanks for that being honest I am never sure if I am wasting my time doing small map scens - despite lots of folk sayin they want them pretty much everyone wants to play the full map scenarios I never really see anyone trying the small map scenarios or get much in the way of feedback and given the efforts we went to in opening up the editor I am amazed that no one else writes them - hence why this is my 1st new one in 18 months !!!

Their was an effort at a SOPAC scen a few years back and JWE and team I think have 3 up and running for H2H but the lack of others venturing into doing any always makes me think that people say they want them but actually everyone really wants the big beast !!!

Andy -

I can understand your concern, that after spending significant effort creating a small map scenario, there seems to be few responses or recognition.

I strongly suspect that many may play them; but may not comment on the forum.

The small map scenarios give me the opportunity to play all aspects of AE without the hours and hours of setup and prep, not to mention a time consuming turn (I play campaign scenarios H2H; small map against your <awesome!> AI).

My preference to alternate between a few turns of the campaign game and then practicing with a small map scenario. Burma, for example, allowed me to learn (with much replaying!) and optimize my strategy to take Rangoon. I also played the Allied side and learned much.

Mountbatten's folly will be an opportunity to practice and apply the principles of amphibious warfare - experimenting with different approaches.

Also: I have shamelessly ported your unique units in the NastyNasy scenario into my Babes 28Cv12 campaign game; in addition to applying other concepts (higher Allied morale, increased aircraft pools etc.).

Your work is original, unique and very much appreciated, Sir.

Mac

P.S. Flight Cruisers and Q Ships forever...<grin>

I like the small map scenarios - Battle of Burma, Guadalcanal, Marianas, Buccaneer, Downfall. And, you do good work, Andy Mac. maybe the lack of response is because we are morning into the holiday season and people have other priorities.

Just seems odd that 4 years in no one else apart from the babes team is doing small map scenaros when everyone says they want them

With such an active group of modders it always struck me as a little odd !!!

But many of us probably only do it for personal use, I found it a lot of work getting the AI to work properly. I had a "Invasion Australia" and WPO 1941 (Only 2 CV on each side) both without a propely working AI.

Louis Folly is interesting, as is any game where you have no idea of what the opposition is going to do. Having a few problems keeping the IJA out of Rangoon at the moment.

Cupla oddities, 14 Sqn RNZAF has Buffalos and is tied to a NZ upgrade line. 155 RAF has Mohawks, while reasonable I doubt they would be front line at this point.

Hi Andy,

thank you for creating small scenarios, i am returning to WITP after years. I will no longer have time for grand campaign.

I will for sure try all your small scens. Its great you create small scanearios with challenging AI - and we "part-time" players can also have fun.

Given how much else I have to do (see my sig, especially the third item), WITP:AE is the only other game I allow myself time to play (other than the Campaign Series).

I consider WITP:AE to be the finest computer war game ever made. I have no time for the GCs. Small map scenarios make WITP:AE accessible for me.

All thanks to you and Symon. Keep 'em coming!

Andy; the small scenario people don't engage much on the forum, but many of them are the most dedicated and knowledgeable players. Comments are far and few between, and many are by pm, but always on the money, succinct and helpful. They may be muted and under the radar, but they are there. They are the ones that make it all worth while.

If you are used to the baying of the hounds at the Grand GC Hunt, it might seem that your efforts are unappreciated, but they are appreciated ... believe me, they are. Ciao. J

Interestingly Mohawks were still in frontline service in 44 !!!

Buffalos are an error I will pick up.

This scenario is not Babes-compatible, should only be used with a standard AE install, right?
