While playing the Barbarossa scenario I noticed that the German convoys I set up in the Baltic Sea were idle. I checked the RAC and found this section:

TRANSPORTING RESOURCES BY RAIL
You transport a resource to a factory in the production step by railing it from its hex to a usable factory. It must move along railway lines (roads count as railways for this purpose). It can also cross a straits hexside from one railway hex to another. Each resource cannot cross more than 1 straits hexsides.

Transporting resources from Sweden to Germany through Denmark will cross the Malmö / Copenhagen straits and then the straits over to Fyn/Jylland (hex 45,36), for a total of 2 straits crossed (one more than allowed). Or does the second not count as a straits hexside for this purpose since it's also a connected railway hexside?

First I want to know if the weather in the Arctic weather zone was snow or blizzard?

----

All straits count so it should not be possible to rail resources from Sweden to Germany through Denmark.

But for the Barbarossa scenario then there are special rules that apply. Sweden is outside the playable area but the resources should be lent to Germany and must be shipped by the Baltic Sea.

Cut from Scenarios Booklet 24.2.1 Barbarossa ~ “One Kick...”: May/Jun 1941~Jan/Feb 1942:
....
Off-map production: Germany ~ 3 resources in Sweden that must be
transported via the Baltic Sea to be useable....
....
Maps used: Eastern European, but only north of Yugoslavia, Bulgaria,
Turkey and Persia and excluding Sweden.

No, the turn was July/August and the weather in the Arctic zone was Rain.

The convoys are necessary in the Barbarossa scenario.

Barbarossa has a several odds rules about production, with some areas of the map controlled by the major powers not contributing their resources (e.g., occupied France and the far east for the USSR). Therefore the code was hand tailored for doing production for that scenario. One result is that the convoys in the Baltic Sea are necessary for the Swedish resources to reach Germany, although they do not appear as convoying anything on the Production Planning form. Also, the weather doesn't matter because the convoys would be necessary even if the resources were being transported through Narvik. Lastly, yes the two straits hexes are what prevent those resources from being convoyed purely by rail.

Thanks Steve for clarifying how the convoys are used in the Barbarossa scenario. I would most likely have realized this dependency had I returned the convoys to port.

Hopefully I'll be able to start testing some Barbarossa NetPlay action during the holidays and maybe even some Global War.

When you're out of the urgent bug-fixing zone I wish you'd prioritize NetPlay for more than 2 players over AI and PBEM. With that in place I can promise 4 more purchases among my old WIF-Buddies.

Merry Christmas!
