I suspect I am missing something basic here, but it seems to take a really long time to expand airfields on bases. I'm training myself on the Guadalcanal game, and it's now January '43, and I have been in possession of Lunga since almost the beginning. I have engineers and Seabees aplenty, with amply supplies(well over 10k), and have stopped building fortifications and expanding the port months ago, but the airfield is still at level 2 and currently only at 50% expansion. All units are fully supported. Currently I have about 5 Seabee units and a few other engineer units, all in combat mode. My historical reading says the US could build airfields at an extremely fast pace.

What am I missing?

Check the op mode of the eng units. You need combat mode for them to build anything IIRC.

If that is not the reason, a screenshot of the base would help to clear things up.

Also, in the GCanal game, Lunga starts as a 2 (0) with the standard size being zero... VERY difficult to expand.. for short scenario purposes.... so that you don't expand it to a lvl 9 and blast the Japanese into oblivion.

In the GRAND CAMPAIGN, Lunga is much easier to expand.. its AF is like a 0 (5).

Does this make sense?

I don't think supply is the problem, and I double checked to make sure everyone's in combat mode. So, Jeffk3510 is right, it must be a scenario design choice. Considering I'm almost at the end of the scenario, I don't see it as a problem. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. Thanks, all!

hi rsallen64,

I hope you find the info in this thread useful:
http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2885601&mpage=1&key=

according to this info, it takes far longer to build a 2(0) base into a 3(0) base, than it does to build a 7(9) base into a 9(9) base. Also, that it doesn't help to throw more Engr points at the small base - they won't increase the build-rate.

hth.

Good points, all, and thank you so much for the info and the responses. Makes perfect sense to me, now that I think of it.
