In Trade agreements, the French trade agreement with the CW is deleted. In it's place, the CW decides to trade one oil to the Free French for reorganisation purposes. They haven't got an army now, but for the future it is best they have an oil at their disposal.

And now, the initiative... The Japanese generals are very pleased...

And so, here is another Japanese military March:

Of course, the Axis elect to go first with the situation in China...

I'm currently beta testing (I expect today and tomorrow), so the AAR is on hold at the moment...

May-June 1940, Axis impulse number 1

Yes, I'm back in business here... Since it's an Axis impulse, let's start with some German propaganda. Here's Charley and his Orchestra, with: Your driving me crazy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3Th8nv90gU

Hitler meets Franco on the Spanish-French border for a meeting to try to convince the Spanish leader to join the war on the Axis side. The answer by Franco is clear: if Germany or Italy controls Gibraltar, than the Spanish will enter the war on the Axis side, not before. Hitler tries to convince Franco from doing otherwise, but he resists. On the way back to Berlin, he fumes about the traiters in Spain and of all the German effort wasted to put Franco in control of the country.
And there is the breach of the treaty between the French and the Germans. There is still opposition from the rule of Vichy in the French territories. Germany decides to use this, to totally occupy Vichy France. However, everything in due time, of course. There is no need to hurry, since the early collapse of France has left the German army in a terrible position on the map. Repositioning the army and airforce for the attack on Spain is needed. Also, the German navy needs to be repositioned to support the coming actions around Spain. Therefore, the Germans decide to take a combined action. The Japanese takes a combined action (land units need to be transported from Japan towards China) and Italy takes a land action.

The Japanese sail two TRS with the 4-4 Marine and a 5-1 GAR into the South China sea

In China, the Japanese decides to see if they can disorganise the communists. The airforce attacks Mao in force:

It's a complete succes! Mao is in deep, deep trouble! Fortunately for him, the ground strike on the other communist stack fails, which means that Mao needs to be attacked this impulse, since it is the only impulse he will be out of supply...

Now, let's look at the Japanese music scene in the 1930's. Apart from military music, the cultural scene in Japan was booming. The music known as “Gagaku” was very popular among the Japanese in those days. A representative song of the time, I've decided to put in here. It's called “K'onju” which means: 'the barbarian drinks wine'... Well, I'm probably a barbarian because I've decided to stay away from this kind of Japanese music, after listening to it...

http://cast.nacs.uci.edu/rgarfias/mp3/japan/netori-konju.mp3

Japan rail moves the MECH division to Tungkwan. In land movement, the Communist forces are put out of supply, by putting a ZOC on Sian. An attack on Mao is made! The Chinese decide to choose the Blitzkrieg table. By doing so, they give Mao the highest chance to survive:

Suddenly, what seems to be a reasonable position, becomes a Chicomm disaster... The Japanese general staff can't believe the luck they've gotten this impulse...

So here is the Great Japan March...

The German fleet sails... Into the two sea box of the Faroes Gap! The CW, being outgunned, decides not to intercept...

The Germans however, decide to initiate combat. The CW reacts immediately by putting the Skua in the 0 box to give the convoys extra cover. So Germany needs at least 4 surprise points to have a surface battle, otherwise the convoys stay out of the battle... However, both sides fail to find the enemy. Germany continues with movement of units along the Vichy border towards Spain. An INF moves towards Morocco. Planes are rebased in the south of France too and the Italians made some move towards the Vichy borders...

May-June 1940, Allied impulse number two.

China takes a land action, US and USSR take combined action, Free France passes and the CW takes a naval impulse. The reason for this is clear. The CW needs to starts redirecting the convoy routes and there are a lot of units in the wrong places on the map at the moment. Also, they believe the Germans are aiming for an attack on Spain, since there isn't any movement visible of units towards the Eastern Front...

But first: here is Roy Fox and his Band (playing at the Paris Café in London), with: “Little Man, you've had a busy day”:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h16JzVV3wXQ

The US sails a GAR towards Dutch Harbor. It is a victory hex and it shouldn't be given up to the Japanese without a fight.

The CW flies a Swordfish into the Faroes Gap. It goes into the two box. The Belgian Congo TERR sails towards the Arabian Sea. The Queens sail into the Bay of Biscay and load an INF. Another INF is transported out of Plymouth and is now in the Cape St. Vincent. The Indian 5-1 GAR is transported into the Eastern Med. Some convoy points are returned to port, while maintaining the major transport routes for resources, so that production isn't hampered by this. Convoy escorts are being replaced.

Finally, elements of the Home Fleet leave Liverpool and sail into the Faroes Gap. They will try to initiate combat and see if they can wreck the German fleet. Other elements of the Home Fleet sail out of Plymouth into the Bay of Biscay to try to catch the German Fleet if it elects to abort after one round of combat towards Brest or Bordeaux. Finally, two fast CW CV's sail out of Gibraltar to reinforce the fleet in the Bay of Biscay.

The CW initiates combat and rolls a “1”... The Admirals cheer when it appears they have caught the Germans with their pants down... Than comes the German roll: it's a... “1” too:

The CW decides to take a naval combat, since with 9 air to sea factors available, they would like to sink some ships without having any losses on their end first. However, in AA combat, the German fleet get's one roll and it's a.... “10”. This means that a lot of CW pilots are dying due to the deadly anti aircraft fire. Two CV planes are lost in the combat. The remaining land bases NAV target the Scharnhorst and the Gneisenau, damaging one and aborting the other.

The German admiral decides to abort. The Gneisenau sailes to Bordeaux and escapes. The other ships sail to Bordeaux too. They get found by the Allied fleet in the Bay of Biscay (Roll: 2). Another battle commences there. This time, the Germans roll a 6. The CW decides not to opt for a naval air combat, but wants a big gunbattle instead. They decrease the enemies results using all the 8 surprise points and here are the results:

On the Allied side, HMS Warspite got hit by gunfire from the Graf Spee in such a manner, that the rudder got stuck. The proud ship sailed away from the battle. A cruiser was also aborted.

Of course, the Kriegsmarine immediately flees for cover in Bordeaux, probably to stay there for a long time. Grossadmiral Reader isn't amused at all...

Here are: The Band Waggoners, with: Penny Serenade:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMJCI0e1_44

Meanwhile the USSR railes a GAR into Bandar Shar, for garrison duty. The Chinese communists see a defeat coming, so the USSR moves all Chicomm units into a position which can be described as worse as compared to disastrous. The Nationalists also concludes that the northern front is on the verge of collapsing and are debating what to do about it. Also, there are rumours about Vichy collaborating with the Japanese. And with a fast MAR on the sea, there are some difficulties to expect in that area to. So in the south and east, a tactical withdrawal is made, while at the other hand, the Japanese in the Nanyang area look vulnerable, so the Chinese retake some hexes in that area. Here is North China:

Oops! Of course you are right. That Chinese CAV was a division, so no ZOC. Well, it's impossible to play the game without mistakes, even in solitair mode.

May-June 1940, Axis impulse number 3:

Japan, seeing the demise of the Communists in Northern China, decides to put more pressure upon the Chinese. They send emissionaries to London, ordering them to close the Burma Road or face the consequences. Churchill, seeing that the CW can't stomage a war with Japan at this time and not knowing if the US will enter the war, backs down and closes the Burma road.
In the US however, this action gets headlines in the major newspapers. One entry chit gained.

Furthermore, the Japanese align Indo-China. This also results in 1 US entry chit gained.

Italy takes a naval action, Germany and Japan land actions.

Some Italian music now: Here's: Aldo Donà – Destati Piccina, made in 1940.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRGHGC2teUA

Italy flies the Flying boat into the Western Med and sails the fleet out in the Western Med too. All vessels owned by Vichy France also set sail, except for those in the ports in Vichy France itself. Some of them are placed in the zero box of the Western Med. Two Italian TRS with 5 cruiser escorts, loaded with Badoglio and the Milan MIL are placed in the 2 box of the Western Med. An Italian division loaded on a cruiser enters the Cape St. Vincent, passing The Rock, firing nothing but a salute to the CW flag. Neutrality rules. Another Italian cruiser picks up a German division and sails together with the full Italian Fleet into the 4 box of the Western Med.

Here is the Western Med prior to the collapse of Vichy France:

Hitler, seeing no intention on part of the Vichy government to do something about the uprising in Madagascar, decides the Vichy government is in violation of the peace treaty. Armored trains carrying HQ Guderian enter the country. Police units arrest the Vichy government and fire Vichies public servants. The country only got a couple of weeks of existence. In reaction, all governors of French colonies join the Madagascar revolt, lead by an unknow French general, called the Gaulle...
US newspapers are still fuming about the British treason regarding the closing of the Birma road and the occupation of Indo-China by Japan, so only 1 US entry chit is gained for the Ge-It pool.

The French fleet is attacked in early morning by Italian commando's. They manage to capture the BB's Dunkerque, the Strassbourg and the Bretagne. The BB Lorriane and the Cruiser Jean-d'Arc are scuttled in the port and all other ships, including the Béarn (without aircraft) escape towards the Western Med, where just over the horizon a large Italian battle fleet is waiting for them:

The Italians.... roll a “9”. The remaining French Fleet escapes and sails into Beirut, where an oil point awaits to reorganise the fleet.

Now, there is a bug with the collapse of Vichy France. I've repaired this bug using the debug tool. I've corrected all Vichy French territories which went Italian, to become Free France, except when there were Italian or German units in them (which is as it should be in the game).

German troops enter Vichy France, taking up positions along the border with Spain. So it's time for another Marching song: Here's “Zehntausend Mann” (10.000 man):

In China Nanyang gets a garrison and some units are moved towards the mountains in that area, to prevent the Nationalist Chinese from cutting supply or running units behind enemy lines again. The Communist city of Ningsia is taken by a CAV division, which enters the city and runs further into the desert. There is no mentioning of this event in the US newspapers. The Marines and the GAR debark in Hanoi, threathening to rapidly advance towards Kunming if there is no Chinese reaction on this move. The city of Sian is surrounded and attacked. Yamamoto throws in HQ support to minimize Japanese losses. The Chicomm choose the assault table, to maximize Japanese losses, knowing that they are probably going to die in the city...

Klydon I need to see a few more important fixes before I can throw myself back in the game. Hopefully will pick up again soon. In the meantime I have decided to do some more of the write-ups, fine-honing some earlier ones and finishing some not previously completed.
