Mediterranean

Due to my conservative nature, the Germans are unwilling to DOW on Greece until there is Fine in Med and at worst Snow (not Rain) in North Temperate. This will allow the German mechanized forces to reach far enough south to be able to strike at Athens on the following impulse. This situation never happened in the turn so Greece is safe at least until next turn.

CW continues to utilize their TRS to reposition forces. By the end of the turn, two more CW corps, the 4-3 Indian INF from Aden, and the 6-2 Sydney MIL arrive in Egypt.

The Italians break down one more corps, so now they have 6 DIVs ready with SCS transport for when Italy wants to invade Greece. They are hoping this happens soon, as they are now three turns in and due to Rumania being aligned, they've only received 2 + 2 + 3 BPs since the beginning of the game. And since they are neutral, Germany cannot send them any trade.

Northern China

It seems the Communists had to forget whatever ideas they had of blasting their way to the sea. Once the Japanese HQ shored up the line, Mao realized that they were sitting wide open in clear terrain with no air cover. The focus of the Japanese attack was in the south, yes, but the Communists were already outnumbered and needed to get some better defensive terrain. At this point, they feel they need to start falling back a bit to the line of mountains guarding Sian.

Southern China

It has become obvious to the Nationalists that with the losses of 4 corps last turn, things are not looking good. The Japanese have taken the initiative and are able to bring the full weight of 12+ corps to bear. The Japanese are driving on Changsha from the south, and Chiang has pretty much given up any pretense of holding a line in the Center. The Japanese don't have anything to take advantage of a hole in the center anyway since they are concentrated in the North and South instead, so all available corps are ordered to the South.

The Japanese are able to gobble up the western hex of the line (red circle) by stretching Terauchi around the west end. To add insult to injury, the Chinese FTR was shot down as well.

At this point, all they can do is hold out and hopefully reinforcements will provide some relief. They build Stillwell but he won't arrive until summer. With the loss of the hex, they pull back and are at least still in control of the resource hex.

For the Japanese, although this are looking good, its now 6 months into the war, and they still haven't secured a resource all the way to a Factory. To transport these resources they need to remove enemy ZOC over the entire rail route, and that requires them capturing one more hex northward toward Changsha. This will be the objective next turn.

Also, the Japanese have learned that units with Movement of 4 are gold as they can maneuver even in bad weather over the mountains, which there are a lot of here in the South.

Here we see more Nationalist losses including their fighter. For the French, two 5-strength corps is not a good sign with the Spring coming.

US Entry

US Entry is starting to move up, and the pickup of a "3" in the Japanese pool helps. US picks interning the Bearn and don't make the tension roll. Again, tension is key to hit the Gear up, and at this pace, the opportunities for tension are dwindling until the US Entry rises more and more options are available. Since the US could still pick another option, they choose Destroyers to CW which does hit the tension roll and a "4" is moved to GE/IT tension. That was a welcome sight to the war-hawks in the US Senate.

France

Once again weather is not very helpful, as snow reigns across Western Europe. As a result, although the Axis wins the initiative roll, for the third turn in a row they give the initiative to the Allies.

With the line somewhat holding, the CW does a naval to start the turn. Among other things, they move a TRS into the Bay of Biscay to pick up a 2-4 AT gun, destined for Egypt. They also are able to pick up the Belgian 5-3 INF in Belgian Congo and move to the UK as a garrison force. One thing, especially as a CW player, you need to keep track of are where different nation's troops can go. Long story short, minor nation forces can be repositioned to Major Power home countries or non-nation territories like Gibraltar, Malta, or the Maldives. Major power forces can go most anywhere else within their own possessions. This results in a bit of a shuffle dance where I move TERRs to UK or India, while moving home country units to possessions like Egypt or Burma for example. Enemy nations are also places where you can bring both sets of forces as well, so that is also a strategy.

The CW also wants to reinforce Gibraltar, so a newly arrive 3-2 MIL unit from Cape Town is moved there.

Since the CW is still not at war with Italy, but could be soon, they post a Vildebeest NAV into the Western Med.

CW also Strat Bombs Germany with their Wellesley bomber, but misses. The rest of their air is waiting to provide ground support if the Germans should launch attacks on the BEF.

On the Axis's first impulse, they take a chance, and throw 2 Stukas with escort at the clear hex East of Reims, France, disrupting the 4-5 MOT and 4-3 INF there. France throws up their air force, and a MS406 FTR is shot down, pilot survives.

The land combat is a blitz with Rundstedt HQ support and a PARA drop, the Germans are throwing everything they can at this and they succeed, shattering both French units. They really wanted kills here but shatters will have to do.

Here is the situation after the first impulse.

France

In response to a hole forming in the French line, they react by moving the 7-6 ARM south to help plug in the gap. They aren't able to close the gap but the Germans will have to get around the Chevalier corps if they want to move west towards Paris.

In addition, France moves the 4-3 INF that was guarding the south up north and it is placed in the same hex with the ARM.

March ends up being not much more of a turn, but the Germans do use their one next impulse to ooze the 9-4 INF and 3-3 ART southward trying to encircle the GARs that France has along the Maginot. They aren't able to create good enough ratios for an attack so that ends the excitement for Mar/Apr. Hopefully May/Jun will be more favorable.

Situation at end of Mar/Apr in France.

Mediterranean
Early in the turn, the Italians continue to position forces for their possible entry into the war. With action limits they are only able to move out 2 DIVs to the East Med and hope for good weather and a DOW on Greece. It doesn't come this turn.

They also move their Eritrea TERR to the border of French Somaliland, where currently there is no French presence.

But overall, the Italians are feeling very hampered by having to call Combineds all the time, and NEED to start getting some much needed resource help from Germany, so late in the turn they decide to DOW on France ONLY. The French navy, other than 1 SUB, is absent from the Med, plus the French just pulled another corps from Southern France, so they see this as a no-risk maneuver to get them in the war, and allow them some freedom in choosing actions other than Combined. Having to roll a 7 or less to cause a US Entry hit, they are rewarded with their gambit by rolling a 10, and the US doesn't react at all. This puts the CW in a position where if they want to curb Italian aggression, they would have to DOW on Italy and suffer the heavy US Entry hit. They hold off on this, because as of yet the Italians haven't actually attacked anything.

In fact, the Italian aren't able to do anything except call a Naval before the turn ends. This is to get their invasion forces out to sea for the attack on Greece, but they end up having to return to port at the early turn end. They do however sink a French CP in the East Med, so they have that, lol. Againn, hopefully May will be better.

China

Not a whole lot happening in China.

The Communists are forming up a line anchored on Chengchow. Neither side has the mass to really break the other.

The Nationalists use the weather to slow things down, and a 4-3 INF that arrives as a reinforcement this turn is put to immediate use in shoring up the East-West line. Through all the juxtapositioning, a 2-4 CAV corps is a bit exposed out on the west flank of the line. The Japanese see that, and as best they can, they attempt to maneuver around to the West.

In addition, using a combined earlier in the turn, they land the 2-2 Siam Corps south to clear the rail line to Indo-China of any Chinese control. Also, a 5-3 INF is tasked with capturing all the Chinese minor ports up the coast.

The turn ends with no battles in the China.

US Entry

US Entry continues to crawl upwards. A "1" is pulled for the JA pool (again!), then for options, the US picks East Coast escort and DOESNT make the tension roll, ugh. Then chooses Occupy Greenland which does move a FOUR!! nice.

For the JA pool, US chooses LL to China, but the Japanese have already closed the Burma road earlier politically and US doesn't have the entry level to reopen it. But at least the tension roll is hit and a "1" is moved to the tension pool.

So tension is way high comparatively in the GE/IT pool at 18! (even higher than entry), but way low in JA pool. To gear up we need an 11 in BOTH...ugh

We're getting there... sloooooowly..

France

Ok, folks. Things start getting exciting now. May comes and with it clear weather everywhere. The Germans use an O-chit on Rundstedt and the Luftwaffe takes to the air. This was a few weeks ago and I don't have all the details of all the air results but I have reconstructed all the vital land moves via my saved games.

Air-wise, I do know that both the D510 and Potez FTRs are both shot down for no German losses (some may have been aborted but I didn't keep those records)

They concentrate attacks on two hexes, and use up all of the offensive chit benefits.

The first attack, at Reims, is done on the BLITZ table, and results in the 1-3 DIV and 4-3 INF destroyed, and the 5-2 Paris MIL shattered.

The second attack, 1 hex NW of Reims, also BLITZ, and results in the 2-3 AA and 5-4 INF destroyed, with the 5-4 MTN corps shattered.

The French line is blown wide open!

Mediterranean
Meanwhile, the invasion of Greece will commence as long as the weather holds up, but since Italy wants to do a bunch of invasions and wants surprise, they must hold up in DOW just yet. So Italy calls a Naval and moves the entire fleet, plus 7 DIVs, all loaded on Cruisers to the East Med. If the weather cooperates, next impulse Italy will call a land and them and the Germans will DOW on Greece.

During the impulse, Italian SUBs find and sink the French CP in West Med.

France

In reaction to the losses, the CW starts ground striking the Northern end of the German lines. This results in 1 German MOT and a INF DIV disrupted. This was acceptable for the Germans as they were not part of the attacking forces for the next impulse.

The French are pretty helpless as they can't mount an effective counter to the German units, other than throwing themselves in suicide 1:1 attacks. Paris is still safe with the new HQ and the returning shattered units from last turn, and there is still a chance they could hold on another turn, but things are starting to look bad, and bad attacks will likely hasten their doom.

On the next German impulse, Fine weather continues, and in addition to the DOW on Greece (to be discussed later) they decide to keep up the attacks with all haste.

2 more attacks are planned, as circled in red on the attached map image.

Both hexes are flanking the Georges HQ and the 7-6 ARM, which the Germans decide to leave alone, at least this impulse.

The first attack, east of the HQ, targets the 4-3 Lyons MIL and the 2-3 AT gun. Both are destroyed.
The second attack, NW of the HQ, targets the 4-2 Marseilles MIL and a 4-5 MOT. Again, both are destroyed.

So far, not a single German unit has been lost.

France

Before we show what's going on in the Med, we'll follow the war in France to the end of the turn.

After the Axis's 2nd Impulse, the French realized that they need to start falling back and cover the approaches to the capital. So far 10 corps had been removed from the map, and there were at least 3-4 more GARR units encircled in the Maginot area.

Drastic decisions were made, and a general retreat was called to get back behind the river line alongside Paris. As a result, the Georges HQ, disrupted due to giving defensive HQ support last impulse, was left behind while the other units in the hex, including the 7-6 ARM retreat west.

At the same time, Storms fire up throughout Europe in both N. Temperate and N. Monsoon, and the French hope that slows down the German juggernaut.

In effect it does, as only 1 attack was done this impulse, on the lone HQ. Even with the defensive odds help because of storm, it is destroyed en masse.

France

The weather clears, and at this, with 9 corps destroyed and 2 shattered, the quickness of the collapse of the French army has the Germans smelling blood.

3 more attacks are planned on this impulse (and what would turn out to be the last) for the Axis in May/Jun.

They are all against lone, low-strength units.

1. SW of Metz, encircled 4-1 GAR destroyed
2. NW of Paris, lone 4-3 INF, in a blitz attack
3. East of Vichy, 3-1 GAR destroyed, with on the breakthrough the capture of Vichy

(at the same time the Italians, who had crossed the border last impulse, were able to capture Lyons)

Here is the picture just prior to these attacks:

Greece

As mentioned before, while France is dying in the West, the Hellenic Republic is also targeted by the Axis war machine.

On the first impulse, Italy chose a Naval, while the Germans on the border waited.

On the second impulse, with Fine Weather, Italy chose a Land, and Germany and Italy declared war on Greece. Amazingly no reaction to the DOW by the US. At this point the Axis is feeling everything is falling into plan.

With surprise in hand, a large CW fleet has to sit idle in reaction to the attack on Greece. About the only good news was the fact that the Luftwaffe Ju88 missed in its ground strike on the 4-4 MTN unit guarding the northern approaches to Athens. As a result, the German mechanized forces would not elect to attack the MTN unit, and the only combats were the invasions. Italy landed DIVs at two different hexes flanking Athens, plus one of the minor ports in southern Greece. The CW TRSs are out of position, and theoretically they could only land one TERR without HQ support, so conservatively, they decide not to put any effort into reinforcing Greece. All of the invasions are automatics.

In response, the CW moves the 4-4 MTN back towards the capital to try and cover an exposed hexside. At this point, we see the situation prior to the Axis's 3rd impulse where they will ignore the MTN unit and attack Athens from NW and SE with Naval bombardment support. The CW also throws in ground support from the carriers in the East Med.

The result of the battle is the capture of Athens by Italian troops!

On the ensuing Allied impulse, with the country about to fall, and no way to evac the MTN corps, it conducts a suicide attack at negative odds. This heroic action results in the first Axis loss in the European war, an Italian broken down DIV, as well as the loss of the MTN corps.

There is some maneuvering of no consequence in the North, but in South China, the Nationalist army is in trouble.

As mentioned from last turn, the last Allied impulse left a 2-4 CAV corps on its own out on the west end of the Nationalist line.

The Japanese army declares one attack on their first impulse, as shown in the picture below. The result is the loss of the CAV corps.

On the 2nd Axis impulse, if I remember correctly, the Japanese air force actually flips one of the defending units, and the Japanese declare one attack. Its on the clear hex W of Changsha, and results in the destruction of a 1-2 DIV (broken down) and the 3-2 Shanghai MIL. (NOTE: due to Shanghai already being in Japanese hands, this MIL cannot be built again)

China

The 3rd Axis impulse has no attacks as the weather turns to Storm, and the Chinese falling back as much as possible. Chiang orders a retreat northward towards Wuhan, using Lake Tungting as a shield on their western flank.

This does buy them some time, but the weather improves on the 4th Axis impulse, and the Japanese thrown everything including Yamamoto HQ support into an attack on the Resource hex NE of Henyang.

Defending there is a 4-3 MIL and 4-2 INF. The Chinese, who have been calling the Blitz table the entire turn, get some solace in getting a destroy + shatter result. They elect to shatter the INF, and destroy the MIL, since they can rebuild it quicker.

Here is the scene before the final Japanese attack of the turn.

Is it time to evac the BEF? Probably.

(Note: I'm not sure but I think France was given the opportunity to surrender. France declined and will continue to decline as US Entry is too low in the Allies opinion and need all the help it can get. If Germany Vichys France, so be it. Most of the fleet is in likely to go Free French possessions).

North China at end of turn

With more Japanese forces arriving each turn, the Communists pull back their main line to Sian the mountain gap guarding it.

Notice the 5-3 capture the Nationalist city to the south of the Japanese. A new corps will be arriving next turn and will be placed there. This will give the Japanese pause on whether to keep pursuing west and risk exposing their flank to these units.

Stillwell arrives at the beginning of next turn along with a shattered corps. It's probably too late.

For the Japanese they finally have secured enough land to actually bring additional resources to production. 2 resources are now flowing unrestricted to Canton.

Of course, at the same time, if you notice in the prior post, a partisan shows up and takes away one of the resources up north! Gah!

India at end of turn

Two things to notice here.

First the German controlled partisan. Without an HQ, it is out of reach unless Clear weather, which hasn't been too common in India.

This is the point at which I decided to stop rolling for partisans. Realistic? The idea of partisans sure is but the implementation seems a bit too much a distraction from gameplay, which is what this is supposed to be.

Also notice the myriad of forces that have been moved to India, including the Belgian territorial. Kinda neat.

US Entry

US pulls a "3" into the Japan pool. As for options there's nothing available because the US has been able to choose all of the ones available already. So, more important than the option, no tension can be added to either pool.

Normally, heavy gains by the Axis equate to higher US Entry. As of this point, that is not the case.

(Not to give away anything, but it will be very amazing how quickly that turns around)

Europe
During the reinforcement phase, France receives the 5-2 Paris MIL and 5-4 MTN corps that were shattered last turn.

Paris is full, but the 5-2 MIL is place just SW in the adjacent hex. The 5-4 MTN is placed in the factory hex in Western France and will stay there to somehow try to hold out a needed city for conquest.

Axis wins the initiative roll and decides to go first.

Weather is FINE everywhere except North Monsoon. Most of the action in China is right on the border of North Monsoon and North Temperate, so that could complicate things, but lets talk France first.

Germany decides that it wants to take Paris this impulse, and launches a full scale assault. Since the Allies all passed last turn, in effect the Axis is having a double move, and can take advantage of the results of the last turn.

During the ground strike phase, the French LeO tactical bomber is disorganized by Stukas since it is sitting in Paris, as well as all the defenders. I believe the Germans also used ART bombardment as well. A bit overkill but they want the option to Vichy this turn.

Germany also performs a paradrop as well as HQ support from Rundstedt.

The Land Combat results in the 6-4 INF and 3-2 AT gun being destroyed, with the Billotte HQ being shattered. The Germans lose their first land unit of the game, a 2-4 DIV (broken down).

Here is the situation in France at the beginning of the Axis 1st impulse with targeted hex circled in Red.

Europe
France has no real land moves due to most of their forces being out of supply, so they call a combined and move their SUB out, which doesn't find the Italian convoys. CW performs a Naval and evacuates the BEF, as well as finishes moving all the Netherlands naval units (cruisers and SUB) to New Hebrides in the Pacific.

For the 2nd Axis impulse, Italy calls another land, and continues to maneuver on the French forces in the south. They are already out of supply and they are able to finally get a ratio they can live with, and they declare an attack on the 3-3 INF. They also decide to pull their 1-4 TERR back towards Tunis, as they don't have enough strength to force out the Algerian TERR that is now present in Algiers.

The Germans encircle the 5-2 Paris MIL and declare an attack there as well. They plan on bypassing the other stacks of French units where possible and begin moving troops to the south for possible attack on Spain. In addition, they assign the 5-4 MOT to screen the French MTN unit until they decide what to do with it.

Both combats are complete victories, with no Axis losses.
(In addition the D510 French fighter is overran when the hex is taken)
Here are the declared attacks:
