In the included save USS McFaul is refusing to disengage the goblin he has just discovered. The ship was ferrying up to another location when he stumbled upon the contact. It is set to Maintain Standoff, as well as Automatic Evasion.

Is there something I am doing wrong or is this a bug? I have tried to drop all targets, but it immediately goes back to Engaged Offensive and storms towards the possible enemy sub.

Try hitting 'u'. This will also remove the unit from whatever mission (if any) it was assigned to.

I was facing the same problem, in South China Clash mission, but this time with planes (P-3) when after launching their AGM-84K, they still continue their attack even if they did not have any weapon aboard and despite my numerous RTB and unassigned attempts. The P-3 acknowledged the RTB order but they were also engaged defensive. The end result was that all three P-3 of the group were eventually shot down by the targeted ships.

Here's another example of the situation (B484).

I have a sub which is trying to repeatedly engage an unidentified Goblin contact.

All attempts to get it to stop are not working: Unassigning, Disengaging, Dropping target, setting other courses, assigning other missions, and even trying RTB. I can get the targeting vector to briefly disappear using disengage or drop, but it immediately reappears in the next screen update. The sub's ROE do not allow it to engage opportunity targets, so it should never have tried to engage this target in the first place.

After a while I was eventually able to break the sub loose. I was doing two things at the time, and I'm not sure which was the deciding factor:

1) Hitting F3 and continually clicking on a place away from the contact, to force the sub to keep moving away although it was trying to go back. Eventually it stopped trying to go back.

2) Manually changing the contact status to neutral (green) and setting ROE to forbid engagement of non-hostile targets.

Thanks, Mike. And Maromak, hitting U does not help in this instance.

I had reported the exact same situation (with save included) a few days ago. Setting the target to friendly and/or neutral did not help. Neither did repeatedly un-assigning or dropping target or dropping all targets and all other AI behaviors were off. I had to use the constant F3 -> move away method until my sub lost the contact beyond the certainty threshold to attack.
