I am planning to automate some ships and I was wondering if I could trust the AI if let's say I will have a fleet patrol a system and automated, will the AI do an adequate job of defending that system with that fleet? I kind of want to relax and play a game where I will automate most stuff.

Quite interested in the views of others on this.

Colony defence fleets/ships can work okay. I say okay because I still micro in the early game e.g. don't fight a loosing battle ... pay the protection ... but for the minimum time possible. But later on I forget about them entirely.

Attack fleets I control manually as they are always blowing stuff up which is fun. And you really don't need all that many fleets, even on the largest maps.

Construction ships are always manual as the order, numbers and locations that I build are completely different to the AI.

Exploration ships go on auto when the micro gets too tedious. I hope that Exploration Ship AI in particular is accessible for mod improvements in Universe as I find this ... by far ... to be the most micro intensive part of the game (with massive rewards for that micro).

I always have my main fleet controlled but I am worried about babysitting a lot of fleets later on in the game especially when I will be having a lot of fleets and I usually set up some patrol fleets just to mitigate losses and hold off until my attacking fleet arrives. I still panic whenever I am underattacked and I never waged a successful war ever!

I usually leave defence sector fleets under A.I control. They do a good job but I wish they was an option to auto reinforce when they lose ships. One thing stardrive did well was fleet layout and auto buy options.

I don't mind reinforcing that much but yeah I guess it would be a pain if you are in the middle of a war and you got a lot of ships blown up.

Do they at least automatically go refuel and repair?

Just a question, Any ideal setting if I want a mostly auto game? I am pretty sure that I would want to leave buildings on suggest though and research on manual. I know it would be more efficient to manually design each ships but are most designs and auto-upgrades by AIs alright? I feel a bit stressed microing designs at times especially when there are a lot of components that slowly starts to become available.

Yeah, I would absolutely love an option to define a fleet's composition, then the AI ensures it's always met by building necessary ships and adding them to the fleet.

In the same system the AI does a ok job, but when doing defensive fleets I've noticed that sometimes they don't respond at all or only respond after an attack instead of the warning.

So you get a "warning blah blah under attack" as a ship warps in, but the defending fleet won't warp to the system until shots are fired.

I like playing 1400 size games so I tend to use them a lot but early in the game when its pretty critical I'll be sure to babysit the heck out of them.

For attack fleets, I only use postures when I'm completely dominating an empire and just want to kill bases off as quickly as possible. Otherwise the AI will tend to attack heavily fortified bases or split forces when it shouldn't in a system. I wish there was a way to set allowed targets of an attack fleet based on firepower or something. Only engage targets with under X firepower.

I use a lot of frigates/destroyers for defense, un-fleeted, on AI control. I usually have such a large income that if my defenses seem sub-bar I'll just queue up the production of several dozen additional frigates and then ignore them. For big incursions I'll just re-task one of my manually-controlled attack fleets to counter-attack the enemy fleet that's causing problems.

For the way you've described it i would say definitely yes. The AI will do a fine job of defending a single system if you put a fleet in it and set its orders up properly.

Anything larger than that for me it really depends on exactly what im doing and how important i consider it.
Ive often micromanaged large fleets, especially the most major of the fleets as often their movements are extremely important to your overall defense. I also tend to micromanage most details when my empire is very small.
Once my empire gets larger, the individual micromanagement of every asset becomes less significant/important so i often gradually give more control to the AI. In my larger empires i might just be managing a few ships and a Fleet + Research and leave the rest to the AI whose settings i customized beforehand.

Its probably one of the things i actually like most about this game compared to other space 4x games. When your empire gets so large its unwieldy, you can customize the AI then let them manage the individual actions as they become less and less significant to your progress on a whole. I especially miss being able to automate Colonization whenever i play other similar games.
But i ramble too much :)
