How big was that rusted shell and who left it just lying about?

Also, I never knew there were Indian troops in WWI

Would have liked to have gone on that walk. I visited the French memorial at Verdun where over 400,000 men are buried. You have to see the carpet of crosses stretching as far as you can see in every direction to get a sense of the slaughter. Some of your pictures do that too. Gut wrenching.

That was a German cemetery. We got there as the sun was rising and the mist lifting. It was very eerie. For some reason (maybe it's the black crosses, a lot of them with no name)they have a completely different feel to the French and Commonwealth cemeteries.

We found quite a bit of what the French and Belgian farmers call the "Iron Harvest". One of the guys found a rifle barrel and the working parts (the stock and furniture had rotted away). It was left at one of the memorials.

I had no idea the Chinese participated like that! Many thanks for pointing us to that link.
Sadly, the way Canada treated Chinese laborers who did most of the tough and dangerous work building our transcontinental railroad was shameful, and it foreshadows their cattle car transport across Canada to get to Europe.

Not much different than the Americans. The Chinese could not become naturalized citizens.
