Enemy bombers hit Rabaul at night with no effect.

RO-61 scores a torpedo hit on AM Echuca near Newcastle sinking her.

The newly arrived 11th Sentai, Ki 43Ic takes up CAP duties at Rabaul while the 64th Sentai moves to Buna to take up the defence of that small airfield. Meanwhile, the 13 KU-S-1 Hikotai with its A6M2 will return to Rabaul for some R&R. Commander Kuminata will also receive a medal and a commemorative sword for his 8 kills. Journalists are standing by for the propaganda opportunity.

A group of G3M2 bombers from Rabaul took off to attack enemy shipping at Port Moresby. Unfortunately for the bombers their fighter escort did not get the memo and the fighters never showed up. The bombers barreled into the Port Moresby skies unescorted, easy targets for the Kittyhawks on patrol. Nevertheless they did score one torpedo hit on CL Danae.

On the 15th, I-121 scored a torpedo hit on xAK Steel Age off Perth.

PB Kyo Maru #10 comes out the loser of an encounter with an old S class enemy submarine near Rabaul.

CV Hiyo, DD Akizuki, and a bunch of escorts leaves Truk for Hiroshima.

The 47th 1F Chutai with the new Ki 44-IIa Shoki fighter arrives at Buna. The new fighter will test itself against the enemy four engine bombers, if they come in daylight that is.

Heavy industry reserves stand at 389,965.

“The reports say that many enemy bombers were damaged over Buna, but none brought down.”

Off Perth, SS I-162 misses on DD Arunta twice.

Enemy bombers revisit Rabaul, Buna and Salamaua during the night.

SS Herring attacked CV Hiyo near Kochi missing. However, later in the day the same submarine attacked the stricken carrier yet again and this time scored with one torpedo.

The carrier suffering 67% flotation and 21 % systems damage decreased its speed and is expected to make Hiroshima in 2 days.

TF 130 is docked at Tokyo unloading 40 thousand plus tones of resources from Singapore.

As part of the continuing operation Pansit, 65th brigade is landing at Surigao. Elements of the 65th, scattered through several islands will assemble at Surigao before continuing with the invasion of Mindanao.

At Singapore, commander 3rd fleet, Vice Admiral Takahashi Ikimatsu drafts orders for SS I-165 and SS I-11.

Day 27

Lieutenant commander Isoru stands on the bridge of his destroyer minesweeper DMS W-6. Behind his ship, a task force of oilers follow, riding high on the water, empty.

Other destroyers prowl around the oilers looking for enemy submarines.

To port is the north coast of New Guinea. His ships steam east as fast as they can.

His orders: Proceed to Soerabaja soonest, load fuel and proceed to location xxx.xxx in the Indian Ocean to support naval assets in operation Western Star.

The safe route is northeast, south of Babeldoab and through the Macassar straits. Yet there is tacit urgency in his orders. He orders the task force to continue east. He will steam east of Celebes and through the enemy held waters. A shorter route, but should be OK. There have been no reports of enemy activity in those seas.

The Nakajima research bureau announces that the Ha-45 engine will be ready by June next year, a month earlier than expected.

Throughout the empire, resource and fuel supply issues restored, all factories work at capacity. Heavy industry reserves stand at 415,459.

Surface covering force under R Adm Ikeda, CA Suzuya, Mogami CL Jintsu and Oi and their respective destroyers. The mighty forces refuel and rearm prior to setting course SE, towards the narrow straits that separates Java from Sumatra.

Meanwhile, at Wake, enemy carrier forces attack the harbor. KB I under Nagumo departs Truk although the enemy will probably be gone by the time Nagumo arrives. The threat though, must be honored.

The first action on Operation West Star occurs during the night. An insignificant, but possibly important portion of the planned action. 1st Raiding regiment air drops on Christmas Island (IO) taking the undefended base.

RAdm Tamaguchi on Ashiwara, 40 miles southeast of Sangiang receives the news.

“Well, this part went out fine,” He thinks.

He orders the task force to alter route to the ESE. The ships will pass close to Christmas Island before turning south.

Off Perth, enemy forces spot submarine I-162.

KB 2 continues slowly steaming SSE while awaiting contact reports from the submarines lying in wait west of Perth.

I-165 reports being attacked by enemy destroyer patrol and taking 3 depth charge hits. Returning to base. KB2 increases speed. Maybe tomorrow.

Meanwhile, back at home, the Nakajima Hikari stocks are finally used up. The B5N1 factories begin converting to B5N2. Production of AGM3 stops as the stock of airplanes, unliked by their crews is enough to supply the couple of squadrons that converted to this type.

Ships that pass in the night.

KB II meets an enemy task force during the night. The two destroyers that have been harassing the IJN submarines off Perth, Arunta and Norman are spotted and Tamaguchi orders KB to close. The night erupts in a pandemonium of naval gun fire and the destroyers fire off their torpedoes as well. The enemy destroyers score two ineffective hits: one on Hosho and one on Maya. The Japanese fire, as ineffective as the allied only scores one hit on Arunta before the enemy manages to break off.

However, Yamaguchi launches KB II in pursuit and re-establishes contact. The Japanese guns do a little better this time and score one hit apiece on Arunta and Norman. The enemy gunners score one hit on Mikazuki.

In the afternoon, KB’s planes find the enemy destroyers. 21 B5N1 bore in to attack and score 2 hits on DD Norman with 250 Kg bombs. DD Arunta escapes unharmed.

Night falls and Yamaguchi orders his task force ENE to try and intercept the retreating destroyers.

Yamaguchi’s task force does not find the enemy and proceeds NW to refuel from the waiting oilers. In Salamaua the 11th and 64th convert from Ki 43 Ic to the Shoki IIa which will, it is hoped, be more effective against the enemy heavy bombers.

Recon shows an enemy Battleship task force SE of Christmas Island Indian Ocean. Yamaguchi orders his KB 2 to intercept as a BB task force enters the Indian ocean from the North East to assist.

KB 2 meets the oilers and refuels.

I-27 misses on PC Nevada off Victoria.

Enemy Swordfish biplanes attack shipping at Christmas Island. 2 xAKs are hit by a bomb apiece.

Yamaguchi increases speed. The enemy task force must include Illustrious and CVE Hermes. He feels his two small carriers can tackle the enemy force.

An enemy battleship task force including Resolution, Revenge, Prince of Wales, and Repulse intercepts the enemy transports at Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean. Later in the day 7 G4M1 from Batavia, escorted by 26 A6M2 fighters meet 9 Martlet escorts. The Hamaki score a torpedo hit on Repulse.

6 Swordfish then come in to attack the 1st Raiding Regiment on the island.

On the other side of the Pacific Theater, bombers from Rabaul attempt to attack enemy ships at Guadalcanal but fail to score.

The first strike force under Nagumo departs Truk.

Day 15.

The enemy carriers near Christmas island are finally spotted and Yamaguchi launches his torpedo bombers. 19 B5N1 with 5 A6M2 escorts meet 6 Martlet fighters. The zerosen sweep the stubby Martlets aside and the B5N1 bore in attacking CV Illustrious and two light cruisers with torpedoes and bombs. All pilots miss their targets.

With night falling, Nagumo’s carriers prepare for battle.

The first action of the day happens in the middle of the Pacific. SS I-1 finds a tanker, TK H.M Sidney and scores one torpedo hit.

The sun rises and soon after air activity begins, elsewhere.

Over Salamaua, B17s, P40, and P39Ds battle Shoji, Zero-sen and Danryu with results favoring neither side. But this is not where the action will be today.

Over Guadalcanal 9 G3M2 appear and are met by a contingent of 34 F4F. The results are predictable.

But soon after, the battle begins in earnest:

15 D3A1 bombers with 26 zero-sen escorts encounter 35 F4F-4 fighters. 5 zero succumb to the fighter cover while 3 wildcats fall in flaming spirals into the sea. Only 3 dive bombers are damaged. One more will be destroyed by AA. Heavy cruiser Northampton is hit by 3 bombs that fail to penetrate the cruiser’s armor.

10 B5N2 and 19 fighters attack a task force at Tulagi. Cl Helena, DMS Chandler and AP William Ward Burrows are attacked with torpedoes to no effect.

Now its time to pay the piper.

Some really bad rolls ... hits not penetrating cruiser armor and then (relatively) unmolested clean TB misses. Ouch ...

44 F4F escort a flight of 79 SBD3 and 30 TBF1 against KB.

92 Zero-sen rise to defend the task force. The air battle is short and brutal. 7 Wildcats spin to the sea in flames as do 8 SBD and 1 Avenger. 22 dive bombers are damaged as well as 4 of the torpedo bombers. One more dive bomber would fall to AA fire. Only one Zero is destroyed in the melee.

A torpedo hits CV Junyo but it duds. CVL Zuiho and Ryujo take a single bomb hit apiece. Kaha, Shokaku and Shoho escape damage. Ryuju, unfortunately suffers an ammunition explosion that obscures the carrier from further enemy attention.

Kido Butai’s airplanes find the enemy and 60 level bombers and 75 dive bombers attack escorted by 43 fighters. 17 F4F rise.

4 A6M2 destroyed, 11 level bombers damaged and 4 destroyed by flak. 15 D3A1 damaged and 2 destroyed by AA.
This time the aim of the Japanese pilots is true. CV Hornet is an inferno of flames after 8 bomb hits of which only one did not penetrate. Lexington takes a torpedo that sets off an ammunition explosion. Pensacola and Salt Lake City two bomb hits apiece, and Boise one.

The battle is not over, not yet.

16 F4F escort 38 SBD and 35 TBFs in. 47 A6M2 rise to repel the attack.

F4F-4 Wildcat: 2 destroyed. SBD-3 Dauntless: 2 destroyed, 9 damaged
SBD-3 Dauntless: 1 destroyed by flak
TBF-1 Avenger: 7 destroyed, 4 damaged
TBF-1 Avenger: 1 destroyed by flak

The enemy bombers this time are luckier, or have truer aim.

CV Shokaku bomb hits 2. Junyo one, Shoho 4, Zuiho 2 bomb and one torpedo. Ryujo one torpedo.

And to everyone’s relief, night puts an end to the day’s activities.
