Day 17

Zuiho’s pumps fail and the carrier founders.

Nagumo orders the heavily damaged Ryuju and Shoho to split from KB. Left with a single escort, the two light carriers creep towards Truk while KB increases speed and it, too, withdraws.

A group of patrol boats sorties from Truk to meet the stricken carriers and escort them back to harbor, should they survive long enough.

Shoho, her fires controlled, should make it easily, barring unforeseen encounters with enemy submarines or aircraft.
Ryuju, with 68% systems damage, 65% flotation and fires raging over more than half the vessel, is unlikely to make it back to safety.

Day 18

Ryuju struggles with fire, and water, her sailors fighting the fires with water and the water with whatever systems still work. An enemy submarine approaches, unseen, and fires her weapons. A single torpedo hits, its impact heard by all on board.

The torpedo impacts but fails to detonate. The enemy submarines escapes detection and the sailors, shaken, return to their duties fighting fires and flooding.

Status: offline 		And now the focus of the war moves West. Thousands of miles away, in the Indian Ocean, the last act of Operation West Star takes place near Christmas Island.

The Battleship task force led by Hyuga meets an enemy oiler force, presumably sent to refuel the task force that has eluded Yamaguchi. The battle, if you can call it that, is one sided and the results predictable. Two destroyers, Tenedos and Thanet, and two oilers, Bishopdale and Kanawa sunk. No Japanese losses.

In China, Wuchow is captured.

Truk.

KB disbands in port. The limited facilities are, of course, unable to carry out the repairs required. Kaga, Shokaku and Chikuma assemble in a task force and set out for Hiroshima.

Yamashita raises his eyes from the Asahi Shimbun.

Kobayashi lays his paper down on his desk and says:

“They did not take long to announce yesterday’s victory, idesu ne.”

“A few more victories like this and the war will be over,” Yamashita replies.

“Hai,” Kobayashi looks over his shoulder and, finding the office empty, continues, “but it will not be us winning it.”

“Send an order to Kobe shipyard. Accelerate building of Taiho”

“Hai, maybe the great phoenix will bring us victory.”

Day 21

I-11 finds TK British Duchess off Perth and hits her with one torpedo. The submarine returns later to finish the tanker off with a second.

Sorong and Takao are invaded.

At Truk, CVL Shoho sets out for Manila. The light carrier is intended to reinforce KB 2 so it makes sense that it repairs in the Philippines.

Day 22

TK Akane Maru is hit by a torpedo fro SS S-37 near Doggala. Near Truk, Gudgeon duds on TK Tatekawa Maru.

RO- 61 spotted near Guadalcanal comes under vicious depth charge attack with as many as 9 hits. She has, however, sent out a radio contact report and, in the morning, the garrison at Rabaul wakes up to the roar of twin engine bombers.

6G3M2 and 15 G4M1 with 11 A6M2 escorts meet 9 F4F fighters. CA Chester takes one torpedo hit. An attack later in the day misses.

Koepang was captured on the 23rd.

On the 24th Dili is invaded and enemy troops appear at Buna having traveled overland over the Owen Stanley range. Reinforcements will be rushed to Buna from Rabaul.

Day 26

The 1st Raiding Regiment captures Cocos Island.

Construction of Unryo, Amagi and Katsuragi accelerated.
