Can anyone name this particular aeroplane? Hopefully a bit more challenging.

Since it has modern avionics and GPS , but also has a cylinder head temp gauge (obviously piston engine) and a Bombay door light , I'm going to guess its the BBMF's Lancaster.

I'm not sure on that as it show 2 eng (2 cyl head tmp) unless there's a 2nd one just off the pic. Cruise speed looks to be in the 170-180 range w/ gear ext/flap at 160 IIRC the color bands. Looks like bottom gauge I nthe sun is fuel w/ duel tanks but too much glare to see fully. Doesn't have that Brit look to it so would go w/ American made twin eng bomber???

After the war Erich Hartman was captured by the Russians and interrogated for hours on end. One time an interrogator was trying to get him to admit he was the best ace in history and asked him if he shot down more planes than anyone else and Hartman answered "no". When the interrogator asked how he could come to this conclusion Hartman explained that Marseille shot down 158 British aircraft and everyone in the Luftwaffe knew that one British or American aircraft was worth at least three Russian planes, so Marseille was the top ace of the Luftwaffe.

The interrogators had strict orders not to touch the people they were working over. It was psychological torture only. In this case the interrogator lost his cool and hit Hartman. Hartman never saw him again.

For the Allies there is also Marmaduke Pattle who may have been the RAF's ace of aces. He was killed in the Greece campaign and all records of his squadron were lost, so none of his kills were confirmed. Squadron mates have claimed his total was 50 when he was killed. At least 27 have been confirmed by comparing to Luftwaffe and Italian records.

He scored a number of his victories in a Gloster Gladiator.

If he had lived and was allowed to return to combat, who knows what kind of score he may have ended up with.

The instruments do look American, even though the temperature gauges are in Centigrade. They are identical to the B-24s cylinder head gauges. However this does appear to be a twin engine plane because the oil pressure gauge above the Pax control says "R" on the needle. It it was a 4 engine plane the needle would have the engine number.

The avionics are mounted in the position where they are normally mounted on restored B-25s. So I'm assuming it's a B-25 in the UK somewhere.

Once again, Bill is correct

(sort of). It is a B-25 in the UK, in this case it's the RNLAF Historic Flight's B-25N. I probably put this pic up last summer when she came to visit Coningsby, it made a change from the usual Spitfires etc. I liked the fact that they've taken out an instrument to fit in a connection for an MP3 player
