ORIGINAL: dr.hal Ah the navy, has a solution for everything. Steve I don't know if you remember this, but during the Zumwalt years the navy decided that there were simply too many forms that had to be filled out and it was costing a lot of money, time and tears. So what was the navy's solution, you guessed it, they created a form in which you listed other forms that you didn't use!!!! Now how's that for logic! Hal I wish that I could forget that! But what really disturbs me , is that none of the articles about this , or even comments on them , referred to NERD. To me , this is the biggest Navy inside joke since CINCUS. (For those non USN speakers , Commander in chief , US fleet was Adm Kimmel's designation. Adm King changed it right after Pearl Harbor. In "Navalese" CINCUS is pronounced SINK US.). So does the officer in charge of issue and accounting this new naval wonder , take on as a collateral duty "NERD co-ordinator"? Or perhaps , to borrow from the computer world , NERD master? People who receive this , are they known as "NERD qualified"? "Have you been issued your NERD"? "I am in charge of all the NERDS on the USS Neversail!". (That will look great on a fitness report". Just like PO Smith was personally responsible for over 200 NERDS on this ship". Who came up with this name? And who picks the books that go on it? Frankly , except for comedians , I don't think too many people will be crazy about this program. The Navy can't afford libraries , but they spend the money to come up with this stuff. To paraphrase comedian Mark Russell , "It makes a fellow proud to be a sailor!".
