Very interesting scenario as both sides know what’s coming and there’s far less ambiguity as in other scenarios. Overall, my goal is to invade Woody Island with Marines and a covering force but it gets a little tricky as you have to destroy the Island’s defenses, SAM’s and SSM, some of them mobile, without damaging the airfield they are protecting so gotta be aware of collateral damage. Playing from the USN/USMC side and sending out AEW assets you discover almost immediately the Chinese have devised a complex and layered defensive approach so you can’t just lob tomahawks at the defenses to take them out. So my priorities were these: 1. Get air superiority 2. Take out the Chinese long range radars 3. Attrite the Chinese Surface and sub surface forces 4. Make Surgical strikes on Woody Island to remove defensive missiles 5. Get USMC forces to designated location and remain for 8 hours. Getting Air superiority was the most difficult part as not only was there a formidable amount of fighter and attack aircraft on Woody Island the Marines were to land, but also planes from four mainland Chinese air bases, plus an Aircraft Carrier and its screen of several guided missile cruisers was just North of the island. And I found another SAG of cruisers just to the west of the island to create a logistics nightmare of how knock out the enemy radars. Additionally I discovered there were squadrons of Badger Bombers out looking for my carrier and landing forces. It seemed as if each time I knocked out a wave of fighters or attack planes sudden waves of long range sea skimming guided weapons started appearing out of nowhere! It was most likely the Badgers but I could only guess as they never appeared on radar from any direction! Fortunately none of their attacks pierced my missile defense. I made knocking out the long range YLC Radar on the mainland my first priority. I sent a large number of fighters with a Growler north from my carrier to lure as many fighters as possible up to intercept them. I also sent one of my subs to intercept the SAG to the west of the island. Once the air battle began in earnest, I targeted a large number of tomahawks on the radar in 8 unit waves. Although many got shot down, 3 made it through and knocked out the YLC. My sub arrived not long afterward and found that the Chinese ships on the western side of Woody Island were 4 older outdated FFG’s that were no match for my Virginia Class SSN and in about an hour all four were sent to the bottom. Seeing this, the Chinese Aircraft Carrier and its screen suddenly broke camp and headed north and I sent my other sub, a Sea Wolf after them. Now with a reduced AAW contingent of ships near the island, I figured it was time to start reducing Woody Island’s defenses. I sent several waves of F-35 lightning’s to Woody Island armed with JSOW’s and covered by an F-18 Growler to get them close enough before being discovered to carefully knock out enemy defenses without destroying the airfield. I also used the LCS’s long range guns to knock out several of the SSM’s. Although I lost a couple of Lightning’s, I was successful. Now with a reduced Chinese presence, I then created an AAW and ASW mission around the island and immediately began finding a number of Chinese Ming submarines. They were numerous, but easily found and destroyed by my helos, as well as a number of false contacts and several schools of tuna! Suddenly to the southeast one of my Global Hawks discovered there was a SAG trying to sneak up behind my landing group and surprise me, but fortunately I had a group of 4 Poseidon’s nearby armed with SLAM’s that gave them quite a surprise instead! Now, just as I began to think that things were about to quiet down, the Chinese Aircraft carrier made an about face and began heading back for Woody Island, but ran right into my Sea Wolf that I had trailing it. I waited in deep water patiently for her to approach and once close enough took out two of her escorts and then sent her to the bottom as well. After a number of final Chinese long range bomber attacks, I sent the Lightning’s to bomb the mainland airbases and defenses. After destroying more subs and Tuna, my landing force finally arrived and remained on station the appropriate amount of time. I must say that I had to remain pretty vigilant the entire time this scenario was played out and I don’t know if my strategy or priorities were the correct ones, as I discovered later I probably wasted a lot of tomahawks when I could have gone in with the lightning’s as I did on Woody Island to take out the mainland defenses, but I accomplished the mission with time to spare and only lost 8 planes, although one was a Grower that got shot down when I wasn’t paying attention! Overall, a real challenge and lots of fun!
