First of all, stellar work on the scenario Baloogan.

So decided to try and game out the Anti-Advanced SAM Threat video from Raytheon in taking on the dreaded SA-21. Some modifications I made was loading up some of the reserve F-16s with even more MALDs and replacing the AGM-86es on the B-52s with, you guessed it, even more MALDs. As you might have guessed, this played havoc on my poor machine. I sortied just about all of the F-15Cs and Es for a TARCAP mission just outside of 90 miles from the radars, though it seems that the AI did not like its chances against a veritable swarm of Eagles, Mudhens, and Vipers armed to the teeth with Slammers and all the Flankers and Fulcrums RTBed after a while, giving me free reign in the air. The results:

SIDE: Russian Federation
===========================================================

LOSSES:
-------------------------------
1x BPK Kashin [Pr.61]
1x Ka-27PL Helix A
1x Radar (Thin Skin B HF [PRV-16])

11x AK-130 130mm/54 Twin Frag Burst [2 rnds]
13x AK-630 30mm/65 Gatling Burst [400 rnds]
10x AK-630M 30mm/65 Gatling Burst [400 rnds]
63x AK-726 76mm/60 Twin Frag Burst [2 rnds]
46x AK-726 76mm/60 Twin HE Burst [2 rnds]
12x PK-16 Chaff [TSP-60U]

41x SA-N-4a Gecko [9M33]
58x SA-N-4b Gecko [9M33M3]
64x SA-N-6a Grumble [5R55RM]

SIDE: NATO
===========================================================

LOSSES:
-------------------------------
5x F/A-18C Hornet
1x F-15E Strike Eagle

EXPENDITURES:
------------------
38x 20mm/85 M61A1 Vulcan Burst [100 rnds]
64x ADM-160B MALD [Active RF]
12x ADM-160C MALD-J [Stand-In OECM]
4x AGM-158A JASSM [Penetrator]
32x AGM-84G Harpoon ICR
20x AGM-88C HARM
4x AGM-88E AARGM
4x AN/SSQ-53F DIFAR
30x Generic Chaff Salvo [5x Cartridges]
2x Generic Chaff Salvo [8x Cartridges]

---------------------------------------------

Some of the Hornets went down because after expending their Harpoons, I ordered them to strafe the stragglers. Kind of a mistake. One F-15E went down trying to locate the launchers with its Sniper Pod.

Conclusions:

-Even the SA-21 seemed to have trouble illuminating all of the decoys. This meant they did not engage the MALDs until they were almost on top of them, ~25 miles out.

-Need more HARMs to go with the MALDs.

-The MALDs helped, but that's because the SAMs spent all their missiles trying to shoot them down and they were out of missiles so my flyers could dance in front of the radars if they so chose to.

-Don't padlock the SA-21s. Take out its defensive screen of SA-10s first.

Anyone else try the scenario want to offer their thoughts?

Hello Agiel
I tried it a couple of times using raw American Muscle, tomahawk missiles
Many DDG Arleigh Burke are armed with lots of Tomahawks. Its your tip of the spear...

First of all I tried to establish an air-control zone in front of my air bases up to the middle of the sea
Secondly I took out first their radar networks in the North.
That will clear you the way to send low flying f-16s armed with harms and jassms from the North. Your bombers B-52 carry quite a heavy paylod.
You can somehow in that way create 2 major strike routes.

Also don't be afraid to use Tomahawk missiles to saturate their air defences.
To deal with the russian Air force itself there is a small trick.
Send a couple of dozens of tomahawk (I ve sent 50) missiles from the Ohio class submarine to the russian Krymsk AFB. Use preferably block IV missiles so that you can manually plot their route ...The base is literally unprotected if you flank them from the South East.
Then you know the rest of the staff MALD, ECM from EC-130H Compass and EA-6B, Harms from Hornets and F-16s...

PS Their naval fleet is like a sitting duck. The Russians in this scenario lack AEW coverage. It could help them especially intercepting missiles from longer ranges

Hehehe thanks for playing it!

My original motivation behind making this scen were the rumors of the SA-21 being deployed to Crimea. I wanted to see how the USAF/USN could face such a threat without resorting to stealth.

And, like you discovered, a key component is the MALD decoys!

Usually SA-10s are enough of a threat; they have a secondary role in this scenario as backup to the SA-21, but are very deadly in their own right!
