January 4th to 6th 1942
______________________________________________________________________________

Actually pretty pleased with the last 3 turns!

------------------------
Singapore/Malaya
------------------------

My brave defenders have done more then I could ever hope for. I was expecting them to just fall over and die but they keep fighting. On the 5th the withstand the first Japanese attack since the river crossing.

quote:

Ground combat at Singapore (50,84)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 49943 troops, 575 guns, 269 vehicles, Assault Value = 1390

Defending force 32838 troops, 364 guns, 218 vehicles, Assault Value = 407

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 1

Japanese adjusted assault: 735

Allied adjusted defense: 505

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 1)

Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 1

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), preparation(-), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
2420 casualties reported
Squads: 4 destroyed, 152 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 33 disabled
Engineers: 12 destroyed, 49 disabled
Guns lost 9 (1 destroyed, 8 disabled)
Vehicles lost 8 (1 destroyed, 7 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
1161 casualties reported
Squads: 52 destroyed, 110 disabled
Non Combat: 8 destroyed, 47 disabled
Engineers: 2 destroyed, 15 disabled
Guns lost 24 (11 destroyed, 13 disabled)
Vehicles lost 15 (2 destroyed, 13 disabled)

Perhaps Tom is so nonchalant about Singer after all. This attack is followed up by a second on the 6th.

quote:

Ground combat at Singapore (50,84)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 48243 troops, 574 guns, 268 vehicles, Assault Value = 1240

Defending force 31336 troops, 355 guns, 216 vehicles, Assault Value = 297

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 0

Japanese adjusted assault: 416

Allied adjusted defense: 411

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 0

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), preparation(-), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
1436 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 100 disabled
Non Combat: 58 destroyed, 17 disabled
Engineers: 33 destroyed, 18 disabled
Vehicles lost 18 (11 destroyed, 7 disabled)
Units destroyed 1

Allied ground losses:
1484 casualties reported
Squads: 36 destroyed, 50 disabled
Non Combat: 34 destroyed, 41 disabled
Engineers: 2 destroyed, 5 disabled
Guns lost 32 (5 destroyed, 27 disabled)
Vehicles lost 38 (9 destroyed, 29 disabled)
Units destroyed 1

Luckily forts immediately jump back at 1. Could I hope to withstand another attack? Probably not but fingers crossed!

------------------------
Sub War
------------------------

Considering the low number of allied subs we are doing really well with 2-3 attacks per day. Sadly not one has managed to hit and detonate on something.

------------------------
China
------------------------

I´m starting to feel a little bit better about my situation. With Toms initial failure to break through the lines I may have bought some more time as he seem to swing his advance around. Now the question will be if I can shift defenses fast enough.

I´ll try to get a map up later tonight or with the next update as its hard to follow whats happening.

------------------------
SIGINT
------------------------

Hmm...

Is this one of the KB BBs?

No. Hyuga is one of the slower, 25-knot BBs. It's possible she's with KB, but I would doubt it. More likely to be with MKB, or a SCTF/bombardment TF.

I bet you've picked up on the invasion force for one of the SoPac targets... That looks to be roughly in line with the Truk-Suva routing?

Ah, thanks. You are right about Truk-Suva. I bet KB is around in the area too. He wouldn´t send them in without KB cover. Especially since my CVs was last spotted around Canton.

Tomasz continues to be one step ahead of me. I had hoped I would get 2-4 weeks more.

That was a costly attack there. Lots of non-combat losses. Could be he is in a hurry to be able to pass an invasion past Singers.

The Ise BBs (Hyuga) make excellent bombardment ships. 12x36cm guns.

Indeed I´m very pleased. Lots of combat engineers lost there. Might have problems lowering the forts for the next attack. But withstanding another attack would be a miracle. Raw AV is down to 212!

With the Hyuga there I'd be thinking about the Canton Island-Christmas Island area. It's a straight shot down the Solomons to Fiji-Pago, so this looks to be heading further East. Hmmmm.

This is a bit far to the south to be Canton/Christmas, but I suppose those are possibilities. Canton is an important early target.

January 8th to 9th 1942
______________________________________________________________________________

No much happening. But some interesting SIGINT...

------------------------
Singapore/Malaya
------------------------

After the two failed attacks Tom is satisfied with bombardments alone. Forts reach 2.

------------------------
Philippines
------------------------

Nothing to report here as the situation is static.

------------------------
China
------------------------

I´ve attached a screen of the situation on the 8th. Typical enough there seems to be a big shift among Japanese troops on the 9th. I´ll try to update the map for tomorrow. From the looks of it Tom has abandoned the attempt on Ankang which is a huge relief. I rather hold Ankang then Sian...

------------------------
Subwar
------------------------

A Japanese subs sink CL Mauritius while she was limping toward Colombo. She sinks like a rock. A Dutch subs misses BB Yamashiro (dang) but another Dutch subs sinks an xAK with troops onboard.

------------------------
SIGINT
------------------------

Not really a surprise here...nice with confirmation though.

quote:

11/33rd Division is loaded on a Japanese xAP moving to Noumea.

I wonder if he will play it safe with 1 ID at Noumea and 2 at Suva/Nadi. Or if he will be more ambitious?

The danger with the Amphib bonus is that he can just dump 3 ID on any island, pick them up and move on to the next. So any defense I put up will have to be strong enough to withstand (or at least slow) three full IDs + KB. Which means any defense has to be substantial. Sadly "substantial" is not part of the Allied OOB at this point.

I think the plan for now will continue to be to make sure OZ are as secure as possible. That means that besides some small speedbumps I won´t invest in SOPAC...for now...I like SOPAC. Best place on the map to fight the Japanese in 42.

Not sure what troops you have in the Yenan area but if you can get a unit to the hex 89.31 or 90.32 you will cut off all practical supply flow to those 800av of troops. It is VERY hard to supply a drive on Lanchow through that route, his units will always be in the red and if you get a unit (or more of course) there it cuts the IJA off from all but a small trickle. He will have to send troops there to oust them and will have to shock attack to get there. Then you get the unit(s) back in Chungking later and he has lost a month of time. However you can supply that unit(s) enough to move them there in the first place.

Sadly I have nothing in the area or even close to those two hexes. I´m desperately trying to find some troops to send towards Lanchow. Right now all I could spare was two small corps (280 AV) that was resting at Sian.

I think Tom stripped southern China and sent everything towards Sian. At the moment I feel kind of depressed about the situation. Not much I can do against 4000 well supplied Japanese AV. I simply lack the troops for it. I would need at least 6000-8000 AV OR 4000 AV and adequate supply. My main goal has slowly shifted from trying to hold the line to keep some units intact to provide a credible defense of the Chunking basin once the MLR around Sian collapses.

The question I have to answer is: Do I abandon Sian and Lanchow to shorten the line and put up a new MLR around the Chungking basin. I´m leaning towards "no".

I'd send one of those two corps to the aforementioned hexes anyway. One corps less will not make in difference in combat but as guerrilla fighters, it might make some difference.

I'd pull back and start a new MLR across the river on the Chungking side. Make them pay for a crossing and/or make them take a long time to go around it. Some great terrain over there for defense. I'd be real afraid of losing all those forces around Sian, including the Yenan area.

But I can´t get them there? I would either have to walk around to the North over Kiuchian or walk "through" his 800 AV? Or am I misunderstanding you?

I´ll start looking at a withdrawal. First I want to see where his next push in the south will come. As long as I can make sure I have a route open to the west and don´t get my easternmost troops cut off I should be semi safe. I have around 2000 AV moving from the south from the Changsha area. While they won´t make it in time for Sian they can add to the defense of the Chungking basin.

I was able to walk some from Yenan to the West and get on that yellow road from there. You won't beat his troops now but you'll cut their supply line nicely.

Well, there you go. An important indication of Mr. Kane's strategic intentions in this match. Looks like he will swoop down on the expected targets in SOPAC. IMHO, the key question is where will he go next to try to get the necessary points for auto vic. That's where the battle will truly be joined and where the battle for auto vic will be decided. This is a fun one to watch.

Indeed it is! I´m not going to completely rule out a Indian incursion but it certainly feels less and less likely for each day.

Now I just need to answer two more questions. What will he grab in SOPAC? Noumea, Nadi/Suva for sure. Pago Pago too? And what will he do once those are captured? Just build them up or will he actually try for OZ or NZ?

And will he make another big push somewhere? He still havn´t moved in NOPAC and CENTPAC.

January 10th to 11th 1942

Some more good news from Singers!

------------------------
Singapore/Malaya
------------------------

On the 11th Tom tries another attack. To my utter amazement we manage to hold on buying another day or two.

quote:

Ground combat at Singapore (50,84)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 63182 troops, 715 guns, 271 vehicles, Assault Value = 1559

Defending force 30203 troops, 354 guns, 209 vehicles, Assault Value = 234

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 1

Japanese adjusted assault: 992

Allied adjusted defense: 427

Japanese assault odds: 2 to 1 (fort level 1)

Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 1

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
1431 casualties reported
Squads: 2 destroyed, 123 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 20 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 25 disabled
Guns lost 14 (1 destroyed, 13 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
969 casualties reported
Squads: 20 destroyed, 46 disabled
Non Combat: 20 destroyed, 59 disabled
Engineers: 4 destroyed, 2 disabled
Guns lost 16 (2 destroyed, 14 disabled)
Vehicles lost 54 (44 destroyed, 10 disabled)
Units destroyed 2

This was the last time though. Raw AV is down to 138. If he attacks tomorrow he will get it. Sadly that will free up the 5th, 18th and 56th ID.

------------------------
Borneo
------------------------

The enemy lands at Balikpapan without air cover. Sadly all we could manage was a bomb in a xAK as most strikes go after the attached BBs.

quote:

Morning Air attack on TF, near Balikpapan at 64,97

Weather in hex: Light cloud

Raid spotted at 17 NM, estimated altitude 6,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 6 minutes

Allied aircraft
139WH-3 x 6

Allied aircraft losses
139WH-3: 2 damaged

Japanese Ships
xAK Atago Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire
CA Ashigara

Japanese ground losses:
24 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 5 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Aircraft Attacking:
6 x 139WH-3 bombing from 5000 feet *
Naval Attack: 2 x 300 kg SAP Bomb

The base will fall tomorrow as the 21st Mixed BDE lands without too much trouble.

------------------------
Philippines
------------------------

Strangely enough the Japanese air force turn their complete attention at Clark field. Why has he left China? Is this the next target for the freed up IDs from Singers. A quick mop up of Luzon and then onwards with 5 IDs to ???

------------------------
China
------------------------

Not really sure what Tom is doing but the bombers have left China. The troops that previously left the roadblock to Ankang turns back after moving just one hex to the SE.

Tom also launches a deliberate attack that does way better then I had hope. This does not bode well.

quote:

Ground combat at 83,45 (near Nanyang)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 20254 troops, 352 guns, 4 vehicles, Assault Value = 1005

Defending force 52492 troops, 277 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1339

Japanese adjusted assault: 357

Allied adjusted defense: 2146

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 6

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
1302 casualties reported
Squads: 4 destroyed, 146 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 7 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 11 disabled
Guns lost 16 (2 destroyed, 14 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
911 casualties reported
Squads: 33 destroyed, 51 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 2 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Guns lost 9 (1 destroyed, 8 disabled)

This is VERY worrisome. He can certainly afford the losses. I can´t. He recovers. I don´t.

------------------------
Burma
------------------------

His small stack finally reaches an empty Pegu where it stops for now.

quote:

55th Cavalry Regiment
112th Infantry Regiment
55th Engineer Regiment
15th Army
55th Mountain Gun Regiment
21st Medium Field Artillery Battalion

This is not enough to capture Rangoon where 450 AV sits behind level 3 forts. 1st Burma ID will hold here for now. I need to hold on to Rangoon for as long as possible. Once the Burma road is cut it loses it significance but I´ll hold it open for as long as I can.

If I can save the 1st ID its a bonus but I consider it expendable.

------------------------
SOPAC
------------------------

I can only watch as the KB enters the waters east of Noumea. I have not added anything to the garrison and it will fall easily. All ships have evacuated the area. I have decided on a "line in the sand". More on that later.

------------------------
Queen Elisabeth
------------------------

She is "stuck" in Sydney harbor with part of the 136th RGT on board. She simply refuses to unload everything. I have tried to take her out of dock mode and put her back in. 3 Motorized support are still aboard. Not a single one have unloaded during the last 3 turns. Any ideas? Its critical I can get her going very soon!

Where are your other LCUs on Malaya? Do you have a nice little pocket building forts somewhere? He will still have to take some time to mop that up. At least you've lasted into January.

Near nanyang I think it'll be another 5-6 days before another attack after getting a 1:6, and if he doesn't wait for those to recover, he gets a worse result next time. So you might be okay here. Do you have a unit or two in reserve to move in to replace anything that is hit harder?

Where are your other LCUs on Malaya? Do you have a nice little pocket building forts somewhere? He will still have to take some time to mop that up. At least you've lasted into January.

They are sitting at x3 terrain hex in the middle of Malaya (can´t remember the name of the base). But he can easily isolate them using just the troops he already have up there (Imperial Guards + 2 tank RGTs)

Near nanyang I think it'll be another 5-6 days before another attack after getting a 1:6, and if he doesn't wait for those to recover, he gets a worse result next time. So you might be okay here. Do you have a unit or two in reserve to move in to replace anything that is hit harder?

I sure hope so. But he took very light losses and now with the troops return he must feel he has a good chance. Reserves? What is this reserve thing you speak of?

On a more serious note I have reserves coming in from the Changsha area but it will be several weeks before they arrive. In the Sian sector EVERYTHING is on the frontline.

Anything else docked there?

Can the QE dock at another port close by? I have had this happen once or twice but never with anything so big and important. It stinks.

Nothing at all! I´ll have to sail her to Melbourne and see if she can unload there.
