Well deserved, congratulations Germany! Perhaps next time we will see a Holland - Germany final!

Cheers,

Another goal by a substitute - nice Götze! I was hoping for a close 2-1 or even 3-2. The definitely better team won. Higuan will be dreaming of that goal he almost made for months...

You have certainly seen another match. This has been a tight game therefore no superior / inferior teams here. Argentina could have perfectly won

Higuain will dream for the rest of his life...

Congrats to Germany.

I thought the officiating was less than stellar in the match, but otherwise a nail bitter.

A great game, and a great goal. The defenses were superb, Three or four times Argentina had golden chances and couldn't get it done. Even Messi didn't finish, and what was that free kick at the end?!

Watched in a bar in London and at the end they played Don't Cry for Me Argentina!

Yeah, it could have ended either way(especially with Higuan's golden opportunity) but I still felt to me that Germany controlled both the ball and the pace of the game after first 45 minutes and managed to create some twice or more the opportunities than Argentina. Hummels seemed a bit slow though, and his side of the defense kept leaking...

Once again Germany's substitutes were the ones to finish: from Schürrle to Götze to goal.

The team of the tournament ended up winning it.

Both defences were superb, and Swienstiger was the best player on the pitch

He should have been rewarded as player of the match. I lost count how many times he got hit full force but was back up and running in a matter of seconds and continued giving 180%. Been a while since I have seen that kind of fighting spirit during a soccer game.

Nothing against Götze, but Schweinsteiger represented the soul of the team for the whole 120mins.

Other than the Golden Boot, which is clear cut, I have issues with FIFA's picks for top GK and player of the Cup.

The Cup is over. The best side won. FIFA made its picks. Is there a reason you want to continue this and hang your "issues" on the wall in an open forum? Maybe you would be best served by making those comments to FIFA.

Some people, here, know a bit about futbol.

[edit] BTW, that was the most spectacular World Cup in decades. I was on the edge of my seat for weeks. This was futbol at its very best.

Ciao. JWE

Handing Messi the Player of the Tournament certainly seems to have divided opinion. I'm not sure about that one either. On the plus side he did help drag a, not brilliant, Argentina to the final. On the other hand, he failed to win it for them (a la Maradona 86). If you don't give him the award then who do you hand it to? Robben went missing for much of the Semi-Final, Rodriguez possibly, but he only played against one truly top team (and that was Brazil!!). Maybe one of the more unsung players should have got a look in? Mascherano? Kroos?

As for Neuer? I thought he was outstanding - and unlike the other possibles, he went all the way so more chance of mucking up!

Great thing about football - the discussion points never end

Symon, I didn't intend it as a way to demean the player's contributions to their teams. I thought that some other keepers were spectacular for their teams even though they didn't progress to far. The same goes for some outfielders. It's always open for debate as to who was better.

You are absolutely right. This stuff is always open to discussion. Just thought that now the Cup is over, a wargame forum isn't quite the place .. if you know what I mean. I would welcome you to Gambeta. We gots Brazil and Futbol Chileno, and International stuff. There's even a section for Futbol Mexicano that has all the results from all the leagues and a special section for the Primera Division. If you like South American futbol, I think we can find you a home.

Come visit. I welcome you. JWE

Hey Cribtop, despite being a Gooner, you seem to know a bit about football

If you fancy taking part in the Fantasy Football competition next season, please let me know. Here is the link to the thread from last season in the General Discussion forum.

Looks like Premier League group phase will be without Finnish HJK. APOEL will probably beat and eliminate them in Cyprus tomorrow.
