Guessing the scores - hell even the results - seems to get harder!!

Yes. Curious!

I guess all of us more or less follow football. There is a "hierarchy" (historical and best teams on top) and we respect it. This so-called hierarchy more or less worked when the WC started: those who were supposed to win, won; and those who were supposed to lose, lost.

But now everything is chaotic. Hierarchy is not respected anymore and thus weird results follow. If hierarchy always prevailed then this sport would be a cold mathematical exercise.

Greece in Euro 2004 and Liverpool in 2005 Champions League final.

Can't decide Holland or Mexico, Holland or Mexico?

There's got to be at least a couple of surprises surely? But where are they going to come from?

Just decide on the opposite way that I guess and you will get it right.

Don't forget that extra time goals and penalties get included in the scores!

BE I can't see anything about that in the rules. So if the penalties finish say 4-2 after a 2-2 draw, is that 6-4?

Notice the red astrix next to placing tips.

* Pen The result "after penalties" will be applied.

If after regular time (90 min) it is still a draw, then extra time and still a draw then it comes down to penalties.

Score 2:2 (120 min)
Pen: 5:4

------------------------------

Result 7:6 = would be the winning tip

I hope you find this explanation understandable.

Mat

Yes thanks - I just wanted to be sure that we are adding the penalties to the 120 minute score.

Well I went for one surprise - didn't know whether that should be Brazil or Holland. I think if there is one its likely to be Brazil because Chile looked really good, but the thought of Brazil going out at this stage is unthinkable. So I went for Mexico to upset the Dutch and for Colombia, France, Germany, Argentina and Belgium to claim their expected places. As for the Costa Rica vs Greece game, well who has a clue? I plumped for the Latin Americans but would not be surprised to see Greece in the Q/F.

I noticed. He posted yesterday so don't know what's happened there. Perhaps if he turns up before the start we can accept all bids. If he turns up after the start we can do the same as for BE and accept his remaining 7?

I noticed that Dixie tipped a couple of tied matches. Since the result is after extra time and penalties the result can never end in a tie. If it is to late to change those matches then maybe our honoured admin can help him out?

Hope he's okay.

Personally I am happy to take his predictions for any match that has not then started/finished.

I took a chance and it almost paid off....

To be fair, Mexico just threw that away. After they scored they seemed to be totally disinterested in getting the ball in the Dutch half... rubbish.

I'll add my thanks as well, cheers Orm Thankyou for (a) noticing I'd cocked up a bit and (b) being a gentleman and bringing it to my attention.

Hopefully I've got my message away in time for my amended results to be counted for both games.

Dixie, I've altered your tips. Just read your PM. I also saw that you had sent me it at 19:28 so there would have been no problem if I hadn't read it. The time stamp would have shown me that you were in time.

No idea what you are thinking USA vs Belgium.

I think its a good shout. Belgium are fancied but look vulnerable to me. There has yet to be a shock in this round - maybe the USA will provide it....

I'm thinking that Belgium are highly fancied, but haven't impressed me much and have scored a grand total of four goals despite having some quality at the front. The USA on the other hand... They aren't particularly highly rated by many but they qualified from one of the (IMO) tougher groups. Neither side are what I would call star-studded and it will probably come down to a narrow margin and the USA are, in my opinion, a better team unit. They might have lost to Germany, but there's no shame in that.

The highly technical method of comparing the groups is based on totalling the official FIFA rankings for the nations in each group, a lower score means the teams in that group are higher on the scale. Adding the rankings gives us:

Belgium (11)
Russia (19)
Algeria (22)
Korea (57)
Total: 109

Germany (2)
Portugal (4)
USA (13)
Ghana (37)
Total: 56

Therefore, even though Belgium are on paper the stronger team an upset is not beyond the USA. Besides which, none of you lot have gone for a USA win so should they manage it I will look like some sort of football genius

P.S. I think it'll come to penalties, hence my high score result there.

Germany had to fight hard last night to get that win. I don't think that Low and the rest of the team expected such a hard fight. Neither did I tipping a 4:0 win.

The algerians put up stiff resistance and when you think where their players come from, team wise, then they were very good. I wouldn't have wanted to be in the German changing room at half time.

Dixie we did try to warn you.

It was a good match, in fact the last few matches have been very good where anybody could have won the match. Sometimes a bit of luck was needed to just the ball to roll over the goalline.

Strangly, all the group winners advanced on to the next round. All second placed lost. Some very unlucky too.

At least we get a few days rest, before we have to place our tips. It is still very close.

You did try and warn me, but really I wasn't impressed with Belgium who made hard work of beating the US. It was a good match though, well worth watching IMO.

I don't know why but I see the Belgians kicking the Argentinians out And I hope they do so. I'd like them to win this WC. Crazy but why not?

In any case Belgium should show how inexistent and irrelevant the Argentina (creative) midfield is
