its annoying to find that I've spent half hour designing a ship only to realize I didn't unpause after opening the window. Or going AFK only to return to find game is paused because of a stupid pop-up.

Hm, I do not see the point of the game running in the background... There are too many things to tend to when playing, so leaving the game go while say designing a ship would be quite bad.

It might take a bit to get used to DW, but imagine how annoying it would be if you spent ten minutes designing a good ship that is just the way you want it, only to come back to the main game screen and found out that you forgot to pause the game and while you were designing, the pirates blew your space port to bits and now a Boskaran invasion fleet is right on top of your homeworld system. That would sort of suck, wouldn't it?

And in the alternative situation that you're paying attention to the sounds, imagine how annoying it would be if you spent ten minutes designing the ship, heard a combat alert, and then clicked cancel to check out that alert.

By the way, there's always the option "suppress all pop-up screens" if you want your game to run unimpeded while you're sleeping.

i don't understand what game have you guys been playing but I never get that. The option to pause would still be there it would just not pause by default. The suppress all pop up makes exploration ships explore bases and ships which I want to leave alone for the AI because they need them.

That's a ridiculous request. I certainly don't want to pause the game every time I open a screen. You unpause instead.

Members PLEASE! Isn't it easier to help keep the forums civil by abandoning tone and
words like the aforementioned highlighted. It can dissuade new members from asking questions
that when answered will help them enjoy the game or lessen the learning curve. It will be
great when we can all speak like we want to be spoken to. Just a thought!

what was uncivil about me voicing my opinion about how bad of an idea this is?

if i don't say anything how will they know what the community thinks?

he was not asking questions, he is asking for a change in how the game works the opinion is no less valid now then it was before we disagreed with it.

all any of us can give is are opinion, just because we disagree with the op does not mean are word is law by any means. or that we are being uncivil by stating that. look at what happened with the text issue a few complained loudly now I have to deal with huge texts when i preferred the text before.

I said nothing about voicing your opinion pycco, actually I encourage it. But it's
in the 'community's' best interest that the tone and select wording of ALL our opinions be civil, respectful to others and open-minded in our responses. What may be a bad
idea to you (no matter how described, politely or otherwise) may be genius in another viewpoint.
Respectfully speaking, you don't know or speak for or represent what the 'entire' community thinks,
do you?

It can't hurt to be polite in all responses, debated or agreed. That's all.

It is my belief from the time I have been involved with Elliot and Erik that when it comes down
to the game and its changes, a "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" type response occurs.
I don't like the large text either pycco, but I am not the developer, nor do I expect my say in matters
to count for anything individually, although sometimes as a member of the beta team it does. Nevertheless, I'm just speaking on
the way we deliver our information/responses/answers and asking that we all do it with less crass.

by saying what i think of the idea is the only thing i can do and the "community" seems to agree based on responses to the OP.

there is nothing disrespectful or uncivil or not opened mined about me saying that IMO its a horrid idea. it would have huge ramifications on the game especial for me because i use the design screen as a pause or the diplomacy screen or any of the other pop up screens. just because some one disagrees with an idea does not mean its not a good idea the op has yet to defend the idea and how it would benefit the game besides saying

"its annoying to find that I've spent half hour designing a ship only to realize I didn't unpause after opening the window. Or going AFK only to return to find game is paused because of a stupid pop-up."

so by making it a opinionated statement he got others opinions about the subject at hand, there was no cursing and no bad mouthing, nothing just colorful words describing how others felt just as the op did.

yes that is why i said i deal with it, if the op wanted a discussion the op would not have used words like annoyed, stupid. instead of asking like hey guys what do you think about the game pausing when you are in the pop up screens? i don't care for it is there any way to avoid this?

Pycco, I'm going to concede that your resistance to see my point is either intentional or maybe
something else. I don't expect, nor would I, curse words to be used often in this forum. I doubt
Iain or Erik would tolerate it and the person would be banned. Personally speaking, using your
opinion, I don't feel "colorful words" are even necessary. Those "colorful words" you are describing
just might be insulting from another viewpoint. I also mentioned the op's "colorful tone", if you
don't mind me using the term, in my original post as well. I consider this issue discussed to my
satisfaction. I hope you and all others involved do as well. Good morning!

Having the game running in the background doing its own thing for 30 min while I'm not watching it sounds like a really, really bad idea.

I could not leave a screen up for 3 minutes, much less 30 without something happening that I would need to address. So what would really stink for me is that I would be in the middle of designing something and have to save, exit the design screen, and then address the issue. From what I can tell, the vast majority of folks have a similar play style.

Now, if a setting could be created to not pause the screen for pop-up windows, that would be different. The default should still be to pause (opposite of what you are suggesting), but a minority of players who do not want the game to be paused (i.e. you) could have the option to change the setting.

By the way, just a few little changes in your phrasing will dramatically change the help you receive on these forums. For instance

"i don't understand what game have you guys been playing but I never get that."

could be

It seems I may play the game differently than others because I haven't had the same experiences as some of you.

See? Much better.

The design screen is a bit special, but pausing with a screen open is natural when you consider they show the "state of the game". How would the ship list screen work if ships are moving around and changing orders while you got it open?

I have been running a lot of fully automated games, and have missed having the game run while browsing screens, but it is hardly possible for the above reason.
