What is the purpose? Is it integrated with a detachable rear section? That ship spotting web site is amazing. When I was in the merchant marine my poor wife never knew where I was. Not necessarily a bad thing, come to think of it..

The ship is just that, there is nothing more :) It is so large to have maximum number of towed sensors possible and that way cover a much vast seabed area to map to help find potential oil fields.

Give me an acoustic torpedo anytime. That usually takes care of them. The Allies deployed one in the Atlantic, IIRC.

If there is no sound, or very small there is no hit. I believe the WW2 acoustic torpedo didn't had a dual active/passive seeker it only only passive. Might be wrong.
