Comedian George Carlin often said, "Anything we all do - and never talk about - is funny, man!"

Taking that premise at face value, what is the worst blunder you've ever made in a SP:WAW game? C'mon, fess up! I want to hear the ones you'd probably never admit to in person. The ones that kept you awake all night or made you pound your head on the keyboard!

For myself, possibly the worst blunder I ever made in a game was against the AI. I don't remember why at the moment, but for some reason my forces were on the opposite side of the screen from normal as I setup my deployment. Knowing the AI had a large minefield in place I came up with the brilliant plan (and I still think it would have worked!) of placing all of my forces in two packed rows three hexes back from the start line. I had previously purchased 6 heavy level bombers and my plan was to have them blast a lane open through the minefield for my forces to pour through. I carefully spotted the hex I wanted the bombers to start at so that it would go all the way through the mines, even if the bombers were a little "off", as they usually are. Finished with my delpoyment, I hit the "quit deployment" button... and sat back and watched as the level bombers, going in their normal direction (opposite of the direction I was facing) proceeded to lay two perfect strips of bombs directly on top of all my forces! By the time the first turn started the game was over and the AI had a decisive victory without firing a single shot!

my worst blunder I ever made....Hmmmmm, that would have to be my very first Pbem against Hellcat.

A Rookie goes to War:
Now I had been on the sidelines watching some of these fights for about two weeks as a quest...and I wanted to learn something before I jumped in.

Good Strategy, right?...never rush in and learn from others and then try my hand at it. Anyway, so far so good.

After awhile I register and introduce myself...I think Goblin told me to "shut up" even back then...lol :D Nahh, actually everyone was really cool and I felt really comfortable...maybe too comfortable.

I kept on getting called out to fight from time to time....especially by some guy named Jess M4, who kept insisting that I fight right away. I can remember hearing something about "fresh meat" quite a bit even back then....so some things never change guess. lol.

Then, after a lot of prodding and some practice against a jacked up AI...I figure I'm ready. Now the question was who? There were not a lot of "newbies" around to fight...so I was going to have to take on one of the vets.
Goblin?...no way, that dude seemed to trounce everyone too bloody awful.
Jess?...no, he was too bloodthirsty and liked M4's
Hellcat?....Hmmm, seemed to be a very talented fighter....not calling for my head on a platter...so yes, I'll accept his challenge.

The Fatal Mistake
My first Pbem...against a vet...and what do I do? I decide to show off my abilities by changing history! I choose the French in 1940!
Oh the laughter that must have ensued after that post! Every member of the forum must haved chuckled and shook their heads when they read that decision. Hellcat himself even tried to get me to reconsider....but noooooo, I stuck to my guns.
So here I was...setting up my French command...thinking that the French units weren't bad, it was the commanders. If I handle them differently....I may be able to win. Ah, so much for dreams!

@sswhoopin' Follows
It didn't take the battle more than six turns to get out of hand. While the French armor showed some staying and hitting power in some cases...the rest of my units were useless.
The infantry units became surpressed to the point of not being able to return fire to even defend themselves...and that was after taking their first hail of enemy fire!
After two or three bursts of fire (or two rounds of arty shelling) they were in full retreat! I mean they ran at the sound of a panzer engine it seems. From there it just got plain ole ugly...and I found myself in command of nothing...since by the end 3/4 of my units were not even under my control due to their 40+ suppression factors!

Anwyay...by the time the smoke cleared it looked like this:
Germany - 5379
Frogs - 1144

Talk about being humbled! Talk about having your @ss handed to you! That was the worst drumming I ever had...and I learned a lot from it!
Not to mention, from that point on I swore I'd never play the French side again (though a morbid side of me still wants to prove I could do better knowing what I know now...even though I tell that voice in my head to Shut Up!) ;) :D

Anyway...that was my worst blunder!

I can't remember a time at I screwed up. Ive lost count over the many games I've played.
But more than once I've clicked the wrong hex and driven a 5 million trillion point super tank next to some infantry and it blows up from a well placed grenade. I hate when that happens.

My first pbem game - SP3 a long while back.

In those days, there was no place to seek advice as there is now.

I had 1944 Soviets against Germans. Didn't know what I was doing...... clicked on the wrong button and wound up with all of my Russians lined up at the right side of the map, undeployed.

Not to be dismayed, I began to try to make some sort of sensible advance. Finally, after about 10 turns, my troops began to contact 88s, Tigers, (normal 1944 German stuff) piecemeal.

It was not pretty. But it was my first stunning defeat! ;)

Some good stories so far guys! I hope the "newbies" are taking notes and learning from our mistakes. And Orzel...? Anytime that voice in your head gets too loud I'll be happy to take the Germans against you. :)

In defense of the French(hehe) I just finished devastating about three companies of panzers with 2 platoons of Char Bs. Of course my inf is scared sh*ttless from all those scary explosions but the French are finally handing it to someone.

I thought of another stupid blunder of mine.
Ok I buy a nice platoon of Spec Forces and scout out the perfect spot to infil them to. then in my rush to begin forget to actully depoly them. So I end up with 5 squads in the middle of nowhere.
Maybe I should start a Thread called. "Stupid Common Mistakes Hades Makes."

One of my biggest blunders came against a friend (yes, I have one) prior to my forum days.

I had recently down loaded WAW and was excited to play. It was a US vs GE battle (me being US) and I was pleased to see that fate had dealt me about 10 air sections.

Not reading the manual, I joyfully purchased 10 sections of 6 heavy bombers thinking they would behave as airstrikes so I did not assign them during deployment.

I was stuck with a third of my points in unused units and was quickly slaughtered.

ANOTHER blunder, after joining the forum, was to aggree to take on VikingNo2 as my first battle out here.....

I am still walking funny from that one.

I played a PBEM against him not too long ago and can sympathize! I had Canada vs his Poland, I think it was '48 or '49 and he stopped me cold, winning with a DV. Currently we're doing Belgium (me) vs Hungary (him) 1949 and I seem to be holding my own, for now. An excellent opponent for sure!

Oh yeah, I had one I'd like to forget: my first PBEM against Penetrator, Japan vs ANZAC. I figured it would be a classic jungle battle so I (Japan) bought an all infantry force except for a few trucks, totally ignoring the large, open areas on the map. The second thing I didn't notice was that the visibility, which I hadn't manually set, was 45 (so you could see thru a tree hex). Then to top things off the game decided to give his Aussies a few sections of strike aircraft  ...another setting I overlooked.

I learned his tendencies at first contact, which took several turns...it took that long because Matildas move slow!!! Talk about being caught with your pants down; I think every unit I had popped smoke that turn! And that's also the day I learned that Japanese infantry in SPWAW do not perform well against armor. After about 20 desparate turns the battle ended (miraculously) in a draw. I learned several lessons from that one.

Yeah JJ likes them young. :D :D :D

My worst blunder had to do with a PBEM game where I took strategic bomers and did not know that you had to deploy them first turn to strike. 1000 points that just sat there the whole game.

I really like the paratroops. Japan against the nation 1941 Attack. Bought 2 compainies of them with cargo planes. In deploy set them all up near the planes. Loaded them all up,had planes on runway. OOOPs forgot to plan drop zones. Took them forever to reach front lines, after i remembered them around turn 12. Needless to say by the time they got to the fight it was time to go home.:o :o :o

Yes...

Your tanks are NOT anti-armour units. Even your late-war ones are at best comparable to the M-4. Japanese anti-tank tactics consist of luring the tanks, suppressing them with firepower, then keeping them suppressed with constant assaults.

Your ATR's do not have HE ammo in 7.x... only in H2H. :p Related, your ATR's are stealthier and more survivable than your first AT gun.

Don't count on Banzai.

Oh yeah, and...

Your tanks really, really aren't anti-armour units. ;)

received small arms fire. Turn two had FO call for arty on visible enemy, then the nightmare began short and horrid 12 German AC attacked....heard music.... screen changed to crushing defeat. My Bns are gone

Japanese tank are best used against Chinese....... :)

I remember that some Japanese tanks during the final stage of battle recevied so many hit from the M4 that they do not require any cooling system. They're beehive with shell hole. But one thing for sure, why american fired so many shell at them, cause it enter from one side and goes through another when using AP from a 76 mm. Later American learn to use more HE on Japanese tank, it is more effective than AP. I think AP round on Japanese tank is a welcome. At least the commander now has a better view of the battle.

Well I have played SP 1 to 3 for sometime and gave it to my friend 'cause he love war game. Sometime later he introduced me SPWAW and later we tried our first game. We decided to try something new rather than the common unit of German vs russian American.

I used Italy and he used French.

Somehow, French is urinated their pant when seen German but when Italy sees French they drop their pant and urinated.

Try it yourself. I tried it on the computer again and again and after some training try it again with my friend.... I am convience..... Italy is worst than French....

I was playing a PBEM with a friend several years ago. He was playing Germany and I was playing the Soviets. Late war.

I was getting an absolute hammering in the north from his armour and it was starting to look really ugly for me. Down on the south side I had a accompany of T-34’s hidden behind a raised roadway. My scouts had observed what looked like a company of halftracks moving up into position and I intended to ambush them with the T-34’s from behind.

Over the raised road I went with cannons blazing. About four or five halftracks were destroyed, most of their infantry surviving. End Turn.

When I resumed for the next turn not a single T-34 was left alive. He had some armour coming up behind the halftracks that I hadn’t seen and seeing a company of T-34’s with their backs to them took them all out. He even shot up the surviving crews with his infantry.

A lesson well learnt and it all went down hill in that game from there.

Sounds like you have a good life, and you always have friends here in the forums. As for free time, I think you just used it all posting this message. ;)

Now, back to the game! :)

Took me a long time before I discovered that you could order reinforcements.

Critical battle that was small in scale...Spent all my reinforcement points getting a couple of Tigers. When they arrived on the field I started to move them by clicking on the hex next to them...You guessed it, the retreat hex...Off the map goes half of my reinforcements. Always was wondering what those other flags were...

Oh! OUCH! I did that too. Once. Then I figured it out and never, ever went near that retreat hex again. I'm now VERY sensitive to it's location relative to Reinforcement Hex 1. :D
