Right then, first things first - its the attack on the French 28th Cavalry Corps west of Vichy. Its a 5:1 no modifiers and fractional odds increase to 6:1. The throw is a 5 and the Cavalry unit is destroyed for no loss and a breakthrough.

Next on the menu is a more tricky 3:1 Assault in the mountains against the 19th Motorised Corps.

Its another 5. Both sides lose a unit (the Germans have not brought a division! and so lose a 6-3 INF The Germans are also disorganised.

With the stalling of that attack, this next one - against Lyons - takes on greater significance. It's 4:1 with a -1 modifier (Allied Combat Friction WTF!!!!). The French choose the Assault table.

The final attack in Belgium is also on the Assault table and is a 4:1 no modifiers. The result is a 7 - the AT is lost and the Germans disorganised.

Guderian is used to organise 4 units - including those in the mountains. This is vital to the continued advance.

Winston puts in a call to Uncle Joe requesting assistance. Stalin is his usual non-committal self but secretly is considering an attack in the East....

The flight south continues. In China, Mao has agreed to try and alleviate the pressure on his Nationalist chums - well, Stalin has ordered him too, and he has begun moving units east to try and cause the Japanese a few issues.

The weather is a 7 - Fine everywhere. The Axis resume the march south.

Just one ground strike - the vaunted Regia Aeronautica take to the skys...

Three attacks in France this impulse - easy one first:

The 7th Infantry, west of Lyons, is attacked by two German armies. The odds are 4:1 -1 on the Blitz table, but a throw of 10(9) - how few of these we've seen! - means that both the French Infantry, and the disorganised fighter are destroyed.

Next we more onto General Georges in the west. His HQ Support worked, reducing the attack to a 3:1 no modifiers on the Assault table. Ouch! its a 4. Georges is destroyed but the Germans lose 2 of their 3 attackers. That was a pretty rubbish attack....

Because of a shortage of bodies on the ground I have to lose the ART. That was a really dumb attack!

And so to the final attack. Its a 3:1 (inc to 4:1 by the Fractional Odds) and uses the Blitz table....

...6. No loss to either side but the French unit is Shattered. I do not convert - I do not want anymore units holed up in the mountains of Central France

The Allies chances of stopping Germany from reaching the Spanish border before Jul/Aug are getting slimmer... once again the CW have to choose a combined...and then I realise that I can't use a combined because of the FTC rules

The British 45th Garrison Corps holed up in northern France is limiting the FTC nos. An attack is launched against German units on the coast. In practise this is a bit "gamey" (I am purposely trying to lose the unit) but could be seen as a last ditch effort to relieve pressure on units in the south.

Wellington and Harrow bombers are thrown in to the attack (there will be some V.C's issued as a result of this).

The aircraft raise the odds to 1:1 +2 on the Assault table...

...its a 6(8) the Garrison goes but takes a German infantry with it. Well done lads - you took one for the team

Well that was a bad mis-calculation on my part. The Paradrop is 2:1. I get a +1 because the notional was used, but I have no idea why that equates to a 3. I bring in two bombers to get the 2:1 odds but.....

...its an 8(9)!! The Para is disorganised but he lands!

Mmmm.... maybe that wasn't such a great attack. The ZOC for the Para is only in its own hex so I have not put the two French units to the north OOS....

Oh well, moving swiftly on....

The next attack is the 4:1 +1 Blitz attack in the forest....

...is a 6(7) - there are an awful lot of 5's and 6's this game. The French Infantry is not lost but is Shattered (I do not convert).

Ahhh the Paradrop was a good idea. The Infantry cannot retreat due to ZOC (from the other German units) and is destroyed. Yeah... I knew that

This leaves the final attack in the mountains. It's a 3:1 no modifiers. Its ANOTHER 5. Mmmmmm are we sure this is random?

Both sides take a loss (the Germans lose an Infantry Division) but, more importantly, all German units are disorganised.

That last round of disorganisation should definitely have saved Spain from attack this impulse. But the Allies do not want to take chances. They cannot afford to pass with the CW or French so there will be only a 20% chance of the turn ending.

Damn - unless I am being a bit of a thicky, there is a bug in play. The CW should be able to land a unit in Bordeaux or Bayonne but the program is stating this is illegal under the FTC rules..... All I can do is hope this sorts itself out next turn - if its not too late by then.

The Italians surround Nice while the remaining Germans move up to the east bank of the Garonne.

The turn ends on a 3.

The notional has a defense of three because: 1 for the notional, +1 for major power defending in its home country, +1 for being in an unoccupied hex in the ZOC of a friendly corps. 1+1+1 = 3.

Just two ground strikes are launched as most Axis bombers are out of reach of the front line - well, two front lines actually as a French re-doubt has appeared around Nantes.

A 5-quality Stuka and an Italian BR20 attempt to disorganise CW and French troop south of the Garonne.

But first its back to China. The Japanese have to get their campaign kick-started somehow. They launch two bombers against Chiang. The Chinese have no reason not to try and intercept despite the odds.

Round 1 5.3 vs 3.0 in Japan's favour (the Allies to throw first).

9 - AC A Japanese bomber is cleared through.
12 - AC Effectively no effect

Round 2

12 - AC The second Japanese bomber is cleared through
11 DC - Effectively no effect.

With both bombers through the fighters abort.

More impressive still is the fact that the Japanese have actually hit something; two of the three units - including Chiang - are ground struck.
