The Germans decide to pass up on all three possible attacks - against Gort, Toulouse and east of Nantes. They just cannot get the right odds and it could be a long turn.

The Italians however, with Mussolini keen to present his "few thousand dead" to Hitler, decide to press home an attack on Nice. The Japanese make the same decision in China.

Here goes for the Japanese - its a 2:1 +2 on the Assault table - Fractional Odds make it 3:1...

...and its yet an other 6(8). The Chinese lose a Garrison and the remaining units are Shattered. All attackers are disorganised.

Meanwhile, on the French Riviera we have a 3:1 increased to a 4:1 with no modifiers. What do you know? The Italians can throw dice! Its a 10, and Nice falls to the Fascists.

"Hussah!" exclaims Mussolini like an over-excited child "The first conquest in my new Roman Empire!".

The French Fleet is re-based to Oran and the Axis turn comes to a close with the Japanese reorganising as many units as possible.

The turn ends quickly for the Allies. The CW have been able to get two units in each hex north of Toulouse but if the French city falls then their fate is pretty much sealed.

The weather remains un-changed - the Northern Monsoon is still Rain - otherwise all Fine.

The Luftwaffe take to the skies and are devastating once more. The CW have 3 out of 4 units disorganised - including both HQ. The Germans cannot get at Toulouse this impulse due to the alpine hexside. They will need to force a crossing further north by attacking Gort.

With HQ Support, the odds are 3:1 +2 on the blitz table....

...its a 7(9) this time. The British lose the London Militia and Gort is Shattered. The Germans are not disorganised.

Toulouse will not fall in enemy hands. It is defended with 25 factors and all attackers are halved for the river. Even when the Germans get a ENG on the river, this still won't be a better attack than a 2-1. That's not a good attack at all. Even with the disorganised defenders, it's going to be a very tough place to empty for Germany.

Make sure that there are no CW forces in Bordeaux. You need the place in the reinforcement phase for the French units, which might get scattered this turn.

In the north the 4th Infantry is facing 5:1;6:1B odds - rising to 7:1 with Fractional Odds.

The dice roll is a 2! The Germans haven't seen many of those for a while. But what a great time to roll one. The French unit is destroyed for no loss.

Yes, Bordeaux is a CW-free zone.

The CW bring the 9th Armoured Corps up to try and seal the gap between Alexander and the French 10th Army. This fate of France rests on the hex south of Bordeaux!

The Yugoslav Nay counter:

• Engine(s) output: 40,000 hp
• Top Speed: 38 knots
• Main armament: 4 x 4.7-inch (120mm), 4 x 40mm guns
• Displacement (full load): 1,655 tons
• Thickest armour: Not Applicable

The Royal Yugoslav Navy is represented in World In Flames by one counter; Dalmacija. Dalmacija was the ex-German navy cruiser Niobe, dating from 1900, that was acquired by Yugoslavia in 1925. She was named after one of the beautiful coastal regions of Yugoslavia (in modern day Croatia).

At the start of World War II Dalmacija was only fit for training purposes and was certainly not a front-line vessel. On her own she should probably not warrant a Ships In Flames counter, but it is assumed that Yugoslavia's destroyers are also included within the counter.

The back-bone of the Yugoslav Navy in 1939 were the four destroyers of the Dubrovnik and Beograd-classes and, as the most modern vessels in the fleet, it is the technical details of the Beograd-class destroyers that are detailed above.

The largest of these destroyers was the British designed flotilla leader, Dubrovnik. She was built in the early thirties and at that time was one of the largest destroyers afloat.

In the late thirties, Yugoslavia planned a class of five new destroyers, this time of French design. Only three were built - Beograd, Ljubljana and Zagreb - while a fourth, Split, was under construction when the Germans invaded Yugoslavia in 1941. All destroyers were named after important Yugoslav cities.

The remainder of the navy was made up of a mixture of new, and mostly old, torpedo boats, minesweepers and other craft.

The Yugoslav Navy had a very brief war. German and Italian forces invaded Yugoslavia on the 6th April 1941 and the main naval contribution to the defence of the country involved Beograd, which took part in a Yugoslav counter-attack near Zara. This attack ultimately failed and the destroyer was damaged by bombs from Italian aircraft for her trouble.

Most of the Yugoslav ships were captured by the Italians (with the exception of Zagreb, whose crew scuttled her on the 17th April, one submarine, and two motor torpedo boats). These last three vessels escaped to Alexandria, Egypt, to continue the fight against the Axis alongside the Royal Navy.

The Dalmacija, Beograd, Dubrovnik and Ljubljana were all destroyed while under German or Italian command late in the war. Split was never completed by the Italians before their surrender in 1943.

There is one ground strike - against Nantes. This proves 50% successful.

Three attacks: Belgrade, Nantes and south of Bordeaux.

Belgrade first, and what a rubbish set-up - I've never invaded Yugoslavia before - and it shows! 5:1 no modifiers on the Assault....

...3. All attackers are disorganised and the defenders lose one unit. Belgrade holds!

The key hex south of Bordeaux now. This is a 2:1 +1 on the Blitzkrieg table that becomes 3:1 via Fractional Odds....

...its an 8(9). The British lose a unit and the survivor is shattered. Bordeaux falls to the Breakthrough!

And so to the final attack. Its 3:1 +1 on the Assault....

...Its a 4(5). Both sides lose a unit but Nantes survives.

The Allies are fighting back! The Germans are running out of units on the Spanish border. The CW are going to try and take out the German armour in Bordeaux and make life just a little more uncomfortable for them.

Its a 2:1 (thanks to RN support) with no modifiers - 3:1 with Fractional Odds....

...9 The German armour is destroyed for no loss, although the CW are disorganised.

In another set-back for the Germans, my set-up with the Germans was as equally inept as my start positions with the Yugoslavs. Belgrade has been reinforced and Prince Paul has reorganised the Infantry previously flipped.

There will be just one ground strike from the Axis this impulse - Belgrade. Perhaps not surprisingly the 6-strength Stuka makes quick work of the Yugolav forces in the capital.

Just one attack too. The Italians cannot get enough units to attack Zagreb and the attack on Belgrade would be at 2:1... even with a +2 that seems very risky on the Assault table.

This leaves the attack east of Bayonne. Its 5:1 no modifiers on the Blitz table....

...8 - the British 14th Motorised Corps is destroyed and a breakthrough occurs.

The German forces on the Spanish border are incredibly stretched now. They take a chance and use the Breakthrough result to punch the 47th Panzer Corps through to the coast. The port of Bayonne falls and there is now no port south of Rochelle for the CW to land at.

We are getting to the stage where the turn ending is a real possibility. It is the French turn now to take a risk. They move the Bordeaux Militia west. If the turn ends before the Germans can attack the 10th Infantry west of Toulouse, then the French will be able to place a reinforcement with the 10th. Taking Toulouse will then become even more difficult....

The throw is a 7 - the turn does not end....

...but again only one attack is possible; that on Zagreb. The odds are 7:1 and even with a -1 the outcome is not in doubt...

...6(5) Zagreb falls to the German 7th SS Infantry Corps.

There is nothing left for the Allies to do - well there is always something, but they would rather have the 60% chance of ending the turn. All powers pass...

...but the throw is a 10 and the turn does not end!

Mussolini is getting impatient. He wants Mare Nostrum and he wants it now. The Regia Marina are ordered to sea to defend the Sardinia convoy, meanwhile the Regia Aeronautica (with a lot of help from Fliegerkorps X) take to the skies above the Western Mediterranean to hunt for Allied convoys.

Is not sending out 26 ships to escort 1 convoy point a tiny bit to many?

Neither the Axis or Allies choose to bring in supporting aircraft - the RAF have no fighters and the Italians are holding back in case there is action on the Italian Coast.

Axis roll a 8
Allies roll a 6

The convoys remain undetected.
