I'm gathering nearly all of the LSTs at Pearl and also sending them off to Australia. They'd probably be more useful there with the shorter distances involved. I'm tempted to also send the 12 kt AKs, there too, since I have an abundance of APAs and AKAs. Another 20 LSTs are enroute to Christmas Is to help keep the Gilberts supplied.

Missouri arrived at Panama. I see New York is due there in 4 days. That old fossil. Texas and the geriatric Arkansas will arrive within two weeks. I can expect the CBs to show within three months.

I'm seeing quirky things at Baker Is and Tabiteuea. At both ports, I have some floating drydocks, but I can't sellect "ship repair" on the repair screen. A few ships I've sent there need such attention. I'm sending an AR to each to see if that helps the situation. It's nice to have spare ARs. When the game starts, there's all of two in the inventory, which means they're worth their weight in gold.

I'm trying to fly a bombing mission to the port at Koumac, as a coastwatcher claimed that Musashi was docked there. P-51Ds can escort them all the way. (19 hexes)

Over the last few days, B-29s at Patna few a couple raids. They're upgrading now to the next version which extends their range nicely.

Right now, between the three bases he has, KS has about 300 fighters in India, which makes flying antiships strikes difficult. I'm letting it slide for now, but if bombers start to show, I'll have to deal with it. I'm in rebuilding mode right now. I have recon on all three and I'm also covering the northern Burma bases, which seem lightly occupied right now.

Yeah, they do the job, but I do have to rest them. ("Hammer of the Gods")

I'm looking forward to the N. It fights better than the 51 at all atitudes.

He's got about 400 fighters there now, all at Calcutta now, rather than spread out. If I got serious, I could sweep a couple turns and then bomb the snot out of the airfields. A couple days of that usually drives them out. He probably has plenty of engineers, as they do repair up rather quickly.

IMO staging a Port Moresby invasion out of Australia is very problematic. Main reason is that your LoC to Australia is cut with the Japanese in control of Fiji. What's the supply situation like in Australia? Are you sending convoys there? Do you have enough to sustain an offensive campaign?

Even discounting supply issues, there are many issues with that very long line of communication. Any fleets operating off the eastern coast of Australia are effectively isolated; ships from the CentPac cannot get there in a timely manner. But of course the Japanese have interior lines and can use that to smash one half of your fleet while the other one is on the other side of the Solomons. Or what happens if a large CV or BB takes a torpedo? Sydney is too small to accomodate so you'd have to go all the way around Fiji to Pearl Harbor to get repairs. That is a long trip.

Instead, why not start a campaign from the Gilberts advancing west right through the Japanese to open up lines of communication for you and cut off the Japanese positions to the south? Eventually you can move on Port Moresby but until those supply lines are in better shape for you I think you would waste too many resources having to deal with going around the Japanese positions in the SoPac.

There's a lot to be said for this approach.

Port Moresby is not on the front burner. It's more of a bonus if he decides to contest my next moves in CENTPAC. Supply in Australia is "okay" right now, but I'll need extra for any event. Three mega-convoys are shipping out of the states with supply and a big fuel convoy left Cape Town.

I've got three big transport groups headed there. The first one, heavy in CVEs (like 20) passed Pago Pago a few days ago. I have to route everyone south of New Zealand, due to his holdings. Nobody's spotted, which is good.

If/when anything runs from Australia, they're on their own. I won't be breaking Japanese lines to support them directly. If KB is in the Marianas, it's a pretty good hike for them to interfere. 20 or so CVEs will still put up about 400 fighters for cover. I still have plenty to cover my other three landings.

I've got a transport group out to evacuate Upolu right now. That island is another supply sink, similar to Coal Harbor. That would leave my presence there down to just Pago Pago and Savaii, as I've cleared out the other surrounding bases. I need aircraft support form my central Pacific Push, as I was running thin on them. I still have a very heavy air presence on New Zealand, which I'm thinking of relocating. Fortunately, air power is something I'm not really short of right now, so they can sit. At the time, an invasion of New Zealand was a very real danger. I still get intel of troops prepping for Townsville or Perth, but I think that day has long passed.

All is quiet in India right now, though he's built up his fighter strength in Calcutta to just over 500. If bombers start to show, I'll have to deal with it, but for now, I'll just wait. I wish my new bases would get supply.

Well if you're going to make moves from Australia then that's a good place to put your bombers. Doesn't seem like you've used your LBA much at all in the Pacific compared to India. Get them into action!

Speaking of...

04 December 1944

Still mainly quiet across the board. I did a day of sweeps over Calcutta, culling them a bit. They've built back up to some 575 fighters, so I may have to deal with that sooner than later. I don't need a sudden escorted bomber campaign by him to start.

A RN CVE arrives at Aden with two dozen Hellcats on board.

Coastwatchers have been indicating ships parked at Koumac, so I paid them a visit from Brisbane. The effort was worth it. Nicks can't really stop a raid escorted by 51Ds.

Wake invaders at Lahaina are now boarding transports for invasion. They're starting first, since they have further to go. The battlefleet at Baker is headed towards the Gilberts to get that part cranked up. Carriers will be well out front as a screen to the whole event. 15-20 CVEs will directly support each invasion at Ponape and Eniwetok.

Time to get this ball rolling.

Stuff's moving now.

Ponape and Eniwetok invasions are loading from Tarawa and Tabiteuea. Carriers are taking up forward positions along that line, being sure to stay out of range of Truk, though it looks like only about 45 fighters are present there. Wake invaders have been on the move a few days now. Follow-on base forces for Wake and Ponape are loading up at Pearl for delivery.

My troops reach Kalemyo, SW of Imphal and will attack his lingering Japanese troops there. I'll probably push them through to Burma after that, as it appears he's only lightly holding northern Burma.

Massive sweep and airfield bombing missions are heading out for Calcutta next turn. I'll have more to play with, as a couple of P-51D squadrons arrived from Aden recently. B-29 squadrons have healed up nicely since the last campaign.

More fireworks on the way for sure.

The bombing of Calcutta did not go well. Most of the sweeps happened afterwards, and bomber losses, especially B-29s were fairly heavy. It will take them a few months to recover.

However...

KS did evacuate nearly all his fighters, which wound up leaving his ships there high and dry.

Richelieu, along with a ton of CLs and DDs are off to bombard Diamond Harbor, and maybe catch any ships which try to escape. My bombers at Delhi were in reserve, and they're hitting Calcutta's airfield. Though losses were heavy, damage was still at about 33% that day, so I'll try to shut everything down. The three B-29 squadrons at Patna, which I hit Rangoon with last turn will hit Calcutta's port this turn. I may have to simply take this as a fact of life that the airfields there will need my constant attention. Medium bombers will probably take this job over.

I notice my covering fleet carriers are currently spotted. Not sure if he'll come out to play or not. I'd rather have our showdown now. If I can finish KB, I can take the Pacific at my leisure.

Stuff's moving.

Landings at Wake and Eniwetok are a day away. Ponape's a bit slower as it took them longer to load. Hancock's finally out of the yard at Pearl and heading to Roi-Namur. Since both carrier groups out there are at 25, I'll have to juggle a bit to fit her into one of them. Probably cut a destroyer. A CVL was on the way before too, and is probably with them. Recon's showing some surface groups at Truk, but zero info on what's in them. My carriers are a couple hexes W of Ponape right now, sitting tight. I've had steady recon on Truk, Ponape, Eniwetok and Wake, in addition to the long range naval searches. Ponape's probably the biggest target with 12,000 troops there. Wake's around 3,000 and Eniwetok's around 6,000.

Lots of the support ships and destroyers and such I still had parked at Tarawa and Tabiteuea, I'm relocating to Roi-Namur. It's my major sub base now, but I'll set it up as a good staging point for my bigger ships. Ponape's stacking limit is 35,000, so that will make a good jumping off point for the next objective.

Airfields at Calcutta and Howrah are getting their daily pounding.

I'm probably reaching that point in the war where I'll have to figure out what to do with the Russians. I've been pretty good at keeping everyone training, ensuring replacements and upgrades happen for LCUs and so on. Plenty of their fighter squadrons are using later model Yaks now. I have lots of Il-2 units, though I've read here they may not be all that great. I'll probably try using them at 100 feet. I'm eager to cut them loose when the time comes. The manual indicates a sure kick-off date of August 1. I doubt KS has pushed the garrison limits at Manchuria.

Landings start on Eniwetok and Wake. Eniwetok's going smoothly and this should be finished next turn. Wake, it turned out, is home to some real coastal artillery, and my warships got raked over a bit, though not seriously. Land units are tougher there, so this may be a grind. I should get it in the end, though. My landing losses were very light on both.

I'm tempted to go over there and kick everything over, but I don't want to complicate the battle with land based air, which is probably heavy there.

Those rocket gun amphibious craft really did a number on the Japanese at Wake! I've never seen so many disabled squads on a landing or bombardment on a base with level 6 forts. Well conducted operation there. How much AV do you have going towards Ponape?

15 December 1944 (happy birthday to me)

I'm having an issue with this particular rocket craft...LCS(L). It does not seem possible to put them in an amphib TF. Only transport and support. Sorta hard to use them in this case. I sent a group to Wake, but they just sat offshore. An oversight in the game, methinks.

Sangeli, I can't really count AV on the ships, but this is what's there.

Recon shows about 13,000 at Ponape, and I'm wondering if I brought enough bodies. If it gets bad, I guess I can re-route the Eniwetok and Wake invaders over, though landings will be painful. Landings there are two days out yet.

Eniwetok and Wake are mine. Wake was surprising, as I thought that would be a more prolonged fight. Both shock attack despite my settings, so some more follow-on troops must have charged in.

At Wake, the base forces will already be unloading next turn. A USMC defense battalion is amongst that group. I just got a group out of Pearl for Eniwetok, but it's minimal as I can't build that up too high. I'm surprised he's not challenging anywhere, 'cause if I grab Ponape, I can make supply to/from Truk rather painful with bunches of B-25s and P-51s there. I'm just getting supply offloaded at the new bases and will get the troops out right away. I'll probably be able to stage the next invasion out of Ponape, as it has a capacity of 35,000.

It seems like you made all three of your invasion forces of near equal strength. But since Ponape has a much larger stacking limit and garrison, they should have gotten a larger invasion force. I would strongly advise you not to route unprepped units to Ponape; that's a recipe for disaster. Maybe you can make up for the lack of troops at Ponape with ample application of firepower. Bring up the AEs and start pounding the base with ships!

Not what I expected, as I was assuming a direct western approach, if at all. My fleet carriers are moving at flank speed and should easily reach his positon next turn. Hopefully he's atritted enough for me to hit him good. Maybe I can end this show for good next turn.

This was a weird event:

The lines seemed to indicate they came from the East of Kwajalein. I've upped my CAP there.

Against a skilled veteran like KenchiSulla you should never assume he's going to come directly at you. If there is open ocean that is unscouted you have to account for an attack from that direction. Most of the USN fiascos in the CentPac tend to be from attacks coming from the open ocean.

Good luck with your CVs. If you can get a decisive victory against the KB you could turn this into a pyrrhic victory.

I agree with the comment that KS is a skilled veteran ... thus I am not expecting KB to stick around for your CVs to come and smack him around. But I will be delighted if I am wrong!

That's my gut feeling. He'll probably flee. He's known where my carriers are.

I would be shocked if he didn't immediately run for the hills. Having hit your CVEs hard (and paid a price in airframes) he knows what's going to come next. The only reason he'd stick around is if he had something else up his sleeve. Could you instead try and extrapolate where his oilers are and vector that way rather than chasing shadows? If he came from the NE they must be somewhere.

If there are oilers, and if I was the one playing the turn, I would put them near the centre of the triangle formed from Marcus Is/Midway/Adak (or Paramushiro Jima).

17 December 1944

Picking up the pieces.

As expected, KB ran off. My carriers didn't seem to cover the distance I expected, either. I was in a quandary on where to put them right now, and I've decided to park them off Wake until unloading's finished. My logic is that the area to the south is better covered by naval search, so I'd have some warning on any activity that ways.

The mystery Graces, I believe are coming from Ponape. They took another shot at ships parked at Roi-Namur, but Corsairs beat them off without result. I'm sorta relieved in that Ponape doesn't appear to be an atoll, so my troops didn't automatically shock attack this turn. He bombarded me, and I'll be doing the same for the time being. I don't think I have enough bodies to force the issue right now. I'm re-tasking the troops at Eniwetok for Ponape and shipping them for now to Tarawa. In a couple weeks, I can dump them into the mix. Hopefully, starvation can also have an added effect to all this.

For all the fireworks before, transport losses at Wake were not that awfully heavy. CVEs bore the brunt of it. Lots more APAs are at Pearl with a constant influx enroute, so I'll probably never run out at this point. Once supply is fully offloaded, I'll get the combat troops out.

quote:

Attacking force 5086 troops, 45 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 300

Defending force 14461 troops, 237 guns, 286 vehicles, Assault Value = 493

706th Tank Battalion
6th Marine Div /7

It looks like some tankers are parked at Truk. I've a big group of 14 destroyers enroute to kill whatever's there and their about a day or two away. Something to stir the pot.

Bombers are working over Howrah and Calcutta yet in India. I've moved two new squadrons of P-51Ds to Benares and Patna. Some of my late model P-47s appear to carry bombs now, so some of them will hit Calcutta's port.

Almost forgot, this is how Ponape went. I didn't have an amphib force HQ supervising this one, so losses were higher.

More of the same.

Troops at Eniwetok are nearly loaded for transport to Tarawa. When I purposed them for Ponape, readiness was already at 25-35, so hopefully they won't take too long to train up.

Two VP squadrons from Pearl are at Wake and up. This should thwart any surprises from that angle. More will go to Eniwetok when base units arrive. Two AVDs are enroute to Wake also. I started disbanding all the aircraft refugee fragments from the CVEs and boiled them down to about three squadrons. Probably about 100 planes total.

Assault transports and a bunch of CVEs reach Sydney. Two more groups still enroute. I had to strip off damaged ships to Wellington NZ, as their low 7 kt speed was hurting the groups.

I'll probably get Arkansas, New York and Texas forward staged from Pearl where they showed up within the last week. I have ships all over the place right now, so I'm trying to organize everyone. I sortied out a CL with another mob of DDs to hit Truk also after the destroyer group does it.

Does "hit Truk" mean bombardment? The naval fort there is a real bear - I wouldn't take it on with less than BBs at 24,000 yards standoff, or air strikes.
Sweeping for shipping is a good play though.

Good point. In my Japanese game I never really looked at what's there. My main intent is to sweep his ships.

Once Ponape falls. I can start starving Truk.

Supplies offloaded at Wake. Pulling the troops out now.

At Eniwetok, troops are almost loaded. About 100 support squads, which always seem to be the slowest.

I've discovered the island of Kusaie, between the Marshalls and Ponape. It also has a capacity of 35,000, so I can stage from there. I'm assigning a token burned out division, a respawn from an earlier destroyed division, to grab it. I'll recon to make sure it's really uninhabited.

Coastwatchers claim Yamato is docked at Diamond Harbor. I'd like to have what they're smoking. I'll hit the port anyway to be sure, but after the beating I gave her earlier, there's no way KS would send her over there. Looking again, Yamato is apparently at two different ports at the same time, Diamond Harbor and Koumac. I'll pay the latter a visit next turn, as that one's remotely feasible, though she should be somewhere with a real drydock. After that battle, she did eat some 16" shells which did get through her armor.
