KS has some cruisers and such lingering about 7 hexes south of Calcutta. Not sure why my planes aren't flying out to hit them. Richelieu, two CLs and about 20 destroyers are sortieing out from Madras to try and catch them. We'll see.

Lae's invaders will land tomorrow night. I have enough base units along to get the base up and running.

Warships have arrived at Ponape. Some, like California need about 8 days to repair sys damage. At that point, I'll kick off the invasion of Truk. Troops at Kusaie will load up a few days before this so as to rendezvous with the Ponape forces. Onwards from there.

I've had turns where Yamato has been seen at four different bases at once. Everyone has Yamato on the brain.

I wouldn't delay an invasion because of sys damage to an old battleship. At this point you can't afford to delay invasions because of minor things like that. Also, KS might catch wind of your plans keeping big fleets with patrol plane range.

I want the prep up a bit for the troops, so I don't endure 2,000 casualties on landing. There's been loads of ships there awhile now.

I'll have lots of air cover for this.

Troops have unloaded at Lae. Curiously, KS's response was to sweep my Task Force, which I took the worst of.

I've moved all my carrier fighters up to max altitude for next turn. Also, two squadrons of Stangs and one of Spitfires have transferred over, for extra muscle.

At Kusaie and Ponape, invaders are loading up for their move. Lots of ships are going with this one. The amphibs are split into about 5 different groups. I made sure some of them were landing ship TFs to get to odd rocket ships included. 15 CVs and 4 CVLs will provide overall cover, with another three CVEs tagging along. I also have about 3-4 groups each of ASW and Anti-mine groups. Surface forces under Alaska will guard against the surface threat. My second CV won't make the party, as she's still enroute from Pearl. 5+ divisions are involved with at least that many armored battalions. This will all be babysat by an amphibious force HQ, to minimize unloading casualties.

If I pull this off, things will get uncomfortable for him south of here.

I've had ups and downs with Richelieu. I got careless and went too far east, where she ate a couple of air launched torpedoes. The next day, I met his cruiser force. It's amazing when I outnumber him 2-1 that he seems to have twice as many shots as me.

For the coordinate challenge, this is three hexes NE of Manus and 6 hexes NW of Kavieng. They've moved NE from there as the pic shows. I guess I know where KB is. We'll see if he still want's to play with them. I think the captain of Triton has earned the MoH with an oak leaf cluster.

My transports at Ponape went SE to rendezvous with the other group and they're now near Ponape.

He's still sweeping Lae, but I had my guys landed and training. I moved an Australian PBY unit there to help keep track of KB, though they're already near max range. I've maxed the range of the search planes at Ponape, so I'll probably still have coverage.

It's going to get interesting, I think.

I think rate of fire is partly tied to crew experience, so the IJN cruisers and DDs with their 70+ crew experience really pump out the shells. In 1942 they have about twice the rate of fire against Allied cruisers but that really should diminish as newer ships come in and crews get some experience to partly catch up with the IJN.

Nice job by Triton. That must have made your day!

Yep, it did. I was overdue for some luck like that.

03 March 1945

After hanging by Ponape, waiting for the stragglers, the invaders are now heading for Truk. They should arrive inside a week.

After lots of thinking, I didn't go charging my carriers off to catch his. Odds are, they'd just park next to Truk where it's extra 200 fighters would help cover them. That's about all that's based there right now. I am wary of leaving my transports and having him surge some bombers in. I figure I'm carrying at least 900 fighters on all my ships. I've re-organized to where each CV is carrying two fighter squadrons. A VF and a VFB.

I'm getting transports forward based to Roi-Namur, to help keep new bases supplied from there. No matter what, it's still all about logistics.

I was looking at Triton's skipper to see how she breezed pass the escorts without shooting at them instead. Naval skill and aggression are both in the 70s there. I thought maybe a lower aggression value lets them go through the escorts better, but I guess not. Pure luck, I guess.

KS has some surfaces parked in the hex NW of Truk. Can't tell if carriers are present or not. I may start sweeping from Ponape to work on them a bit. I've a few months yet until the 47N shows up, and I'm eagerly awaiting them. P-80s should seal the deal. I'm also eagerly awaiting cutting the Russians loose in August. Troop count at Truk right now is about 34,000. With all the planes there, a good amount of them are probably base forces.

I also think crossing your "T", masked many of your guns and allowed the maximum number of Japanese guns to bear, which may account for being out shot.

Honestly, Japanese CAs are just beastly and so difficult to beat in surface engagements even when they don't get the tactical advantage like that. The result of the battle was exactly in line with my experience.

It looks like there's still lots of ships left. I'm sweeping Calcutta next turn, as I can see KS surging fighters in to interfere.

Elsewhere in India, he's got some LCUs sneaking around taking bases -- Rangpur and Tezpur namely. I've already got some units relocating to beat them back. I'm not sure if they came from Calcutta or bled through from Burma. My free ranging recon probably would have spotted any from Calcutta.

Elsewhere, SB2Cs from by invasion group went at long range to Truk. Fighters weren't as heavy as expected.

Things are really turning around for you now! Seems like the Japanese are getting desperate in trying to resupply India. I have to say, I'm totally against the idea of using APDs in mass. They are best used in small numbers because when sh*t hits the fan, they go down easy.

What's the plan after Truk? Is it the Marianas?

Yep, the Marianas, solely due to the distances involved. I'm hoping I can land at Luzon by year's end.

05 March 1945

Day of Decision (Maybe...)

Our carrier groups finally clash between Ponape and Truk. Before the strikes, I probably shot down at least 30-40 Jills, Judys and Graces doing searches. A number of Helldivers also went down doing their searches, though not as bad as him. I'm not surprised the A7M Sam has arrived. I figured as much.

His strike.

All his bombs must have been filled with cement, as Belleau Wood was the only carrier with any significant damage, being about 20 sys, and very little flt or eng. Yorktown and the others are essentially undamaged upon inspection. My carriers are basically fully intact. I got lots of messages of planes relocating to Ponape, which I was happy with, as I didn't want to clog the decks with extra planes. After checking, none of them are at Ponape, and I'm assuming they're back at their ships.

My strikes: It was frustrating watching most of my planes miss, but I did get enough in.

I think he better be booking his carriers out of there. Whatever numbers advantage I had before, will be magnified greatly next turn. He has lots of surface forces in the area, so he'll probably take a night shot at me. My surface force built around Alaska still has plenty of ammo. Speaking of, I did fend off his surface forces in the night phase.

Japanese Task Force Manages to Escape
Task forces break off...

I'm keeping everyone on track for Truk. I was temped to strip off all the Iowas into another surface group, but my carriers still need any protection they can give -- especially if surface forces arrive.

In India, I've chased off the APDs. I'm assuming they offloaded at Diamond Harbor, as that's as far as they got.

Nicely done! That is a huge victory for the USN. Frankly I'm a little surprised he gave battle to you here. Lack of patience IMO. Given the current date, Japan can afford to give up ground. The best use of the IJN at this point is to attack your weakpoints like CVE fleets, not go after the main CV fleet. Also, he couldn't count on LBA here like he could in the Marianas. Now that invasion is going to be significantly easier and less risky than it would have been otherwise

Thanks Sang. Having the numbers at this point is nice. I have another late arriving USN CV at Ponape enroute to meet the rest.

I am concerned with what may happen on the night phase, but they'll probably suffer on the next air phase.

Incidentally, Shinano's deck got punched nicely by 1,000 lb bombs.

My surface force built around Alaska still has plenty of ammo. Speaking of, I did fend off his surface forces in the night phase.

I was hoping for good results from the battlecruiser! Congrats -- not many games last long enough for Alaska to go into action.

My feeling is that she's pretty much perfect for anti-cruiser work. Pretty much what she was designed for. She'd probably give a Kongo fits too.

What a mess.

As expected, a round of night action. I see KS is using night naval search with his floatplanes. Anyone know if that helps vector surface forces towards the enemy or not? At this point, I'm pulling everyone back to Ponape to get reorganized and to clear the Truk are of ships before proceeding. There's just too much there, and it's interfering with the routing of my amphibs. I'm only delaying long enough to clear them. I want to condense the number of amphib groups, too, since some of my old battlewagons are out of action.

In the big fight, Arizona started taking hits right away, and from then on, all the Japanese were obsessed with finishing here, giving me lots of shots at his ships. It was nice to see the old Colorado doing damage with her 16" guns.

The air phase was extremely disappointing. Everyone was obsessed with the ships at Truk, instead of running down the survivors from these battles. I was expecting to see Yamato eat about a dozen torpedoes.

As it is, my carriers are heading north to try and nail any more survivors. I'll have to send them back soon to restock their airplanes.

As far as my air goes, the USAAF is now getting P-47Ns, at about 100 a month. I had twenty in the pool and I flipped a squadron at Port Moresby to them. B-29Bs are also in production at, I think 30 a month. One squadron of them showed up in Eastern US last turn. Max range 40.

USN doesn't get any new stuff until June.

Forgot to mention that last turn, I swapped out all the medium and naval bombers at Port Moresby for heavies. With a proceeding sweep, I hit Rabaul's airfield this turn. Once Lae gets built up, the smaller bombers will relocate there.

I have more battleships enroute from Pearl, since they got out of dry-dock. Guam is at Ponape, and when everyone heals up, she and Alaska will head to Truk to sweep anything he has there. I got to have everything cleaned up before the amphibs go in. I may include an Iowa or two with this.

Four more B-29B squadrons showed up in the states. They're piling up fast.

This is only a few hexes from Ponape. He has to know my carriers are prowling the area. His surface forces seem to be in two groups now. One is three hexes W of Ponape, apparently heading east, while the other is farther to the SW, looking like it's headed to Rabaul. My carrier aviation caught that group.

The rest are still obsessed with Truk. I'll have about 100 fighters escorting two Helldivers there. If he goes to Rabaul, that will be a mistake, as the Liberators will work them over good once they disband. I'll wait about two days before I switch to port attack there. You'd think my raids on the airfield there would be a clue.

Meant to add...

One combat TF, built around Missouri is headed a few hexes west to try and catch his group. Norman Scott is leading them. Another group with four old BBs and extras under Willis Lee will stay at Ponape to guard.

Quiet time.

All his forces withdrew. Things are settling down. I'll need about five days to heal everyone up, so I can "fighter sweep" Truk with my surface forces. My carriers will be back to Ponape next turn. It will take some time to go through every ship to make sure every squadron has enough planes and pilots. Carrier planes tend to heal up rather quickly.

The one far surface group of his is rounding the corner at Feni islands, so it looks like they're headed to Rabaul. I just nailed the airfield again, and it looks like they're at 86% damage. Bombers are resting this turn and will hit the port next turn. I have some 130-ish for the job.

All my stray US squadrons in New Zealand are loading up for transport to Australia. An LCU each are now prepping for Wewak and Madang. Tons of base units are waiting at Townsville, taken from Cooktown and Cairns. I've been out of fuel at Townsville for some time, so I have to ration my trips. A fuel shipment from Cape Town will arrive in Perth in a few days. More is coming from Abadan and the States. Fuel to Oz is a priority right now. I'm sitting good on supply there right now, but I'll also bring more in.

5 B-29B squadrons are sitting in San Francisco right now. They need to heal up before flying to Pearl. At least a week, I'm guessing.

I'm temporarily stymied with the Truk thing, but I'll have them out again before too long. His carriers won't interfere next time. I need to clear out any surface combatants as well as any MTBs he probably has there. With my big ship sweeps, I'll probably send a couple big destroyer groups to deal with them.

Fighters at Port Moresby are mostly upgrading to new types. Several of the P-38 squadrons had older models. I have some 466 of the Ls in the pool, so lots are going to them. Oddly two "Bomber" squadrons at Ponape were flying P-47s. They're switching to A-20s now. They'll cause trouble when Truk falls.

I have more LCUs in the Gilberts that have been prepping for the Marianas for some time, so I may be able to move quickly after Truk.

Tezpur's next.

My destroyer group reached Truk. It figures, I completely blanked out the probability of mines and 7 of them hit one. They beat up on the MTBs there, losing one to torpedoes. 10 destroyers from Pearl are enroute to Ponape to compensate. I've turned the bigger boys back, as they don't need to hit mines and there's no real warships there. When I start the invasion again, I'll have four all-DD TFs along to fend these things off. Maybe set a Corsair squadron or two to 100 feet to deal with them. I'm thinking about 5 days until this rolls.

Yep, the Marianas, solely due to the distances involved. I'm hoping I can land at Luzon by year's end.

Great victory! You've really smashed the IJN. Which is a good reason why I think this is too pessimistic. Simply landing in Luzon by the end of 1945 is just too late IMO. You need to be making war winning moves by then. Don't forget the reinforcements follow the historical battle. You're going to get enough LCUs to invade Japan in a few months. I think you should go for something a little closer to the home islands like the Ryukus, Iwo-Jima, or northern Japan. Don't forget he's gotta slow down the Soviets even to get by that late. Should make things a LOT easier come August 45.

Wow, I got behind on this one and you've really turned a corner with some solid victories. You've worked very hard for those victories for a long time and it must feel good to be on the winning side of one of those carrier duels for a change! Question now is how to leverage the naval victories into progress on the ground which will be slower and more agonizing. I assume any significant Japanese base will be built up to the max possible level.

I went and summarized Japanese hits.

Airstrikes
Ship Bomb Torp damage

Akagi 1 -
Katsuragi 3 - on fire
Taiho 4 2 heavy fires, heavy damage
Ikoma 6 1 heavy fires, heavy damage
Aso 1 1 heavy fires, heavy damage
Shinano 4 - on fire

Submarine
Taiho 1 heavy damage

It didn't really have a "Midway" feel to it, but it looks like three of them are toast. Katsuragi is probably in trouble, too.

I am flummoxed by the combat report as it happened with my carriers taking major hits and in the end, only Belleau Wood had any significant damage.

My carriers are now heading out from Ponape to take up positions SW and NW of Truk to look for any Japanese shipping. In a few days I'll get the invasion kicked off again. I had some forgotten unit fragments at Kusaie, which I'm getting shipped back to Ponape. From there I'll be off.

Sangeli: I'd like to get Luzon first, as it will let me stockpile bunches of troops in one location for the next objective. Having everyone spread out to deal with stacking limits is getting to be a drag. I do want to go big from that point. I'm even entertaining Kyushu at this point.

I'm getting Roi-Namur set up as a supply hub for further shipments. More of my XAKLs are getting moved there for work. Christmas Is is keeping the Gilberts supplied.

I'm wondering how many LCUs he has wasted in the south once Truk falls.

I hope it's not the dreaded sync bug. Were you able to confirm any enemy CV losses by lost planes? If I read you correctly Taiho took a total of 3 fish as well as the bombs so I would hope (??) that one is down or going down for sure.
