I decided to start one more PBEM game. It progresses nicely.

Historical attrition. Hidden activation. Easy supply off. Manual reinforcements. Small Delay.

Restrictions on raiders (border states or west without commander) and amphibious assaults/movement. Standard Naval Rules.

Mussel Shoals is limit riverine and ship movement in Tennessee. Marines can't be combined with not marines units (I think we will remove marines rule)

Increasing Riverine pool using money allowed only once a year (requisition as often as possible).

I chosen to embark on eastern startegy, builing only limited amout of troops west of Appalachia Mountains. Decided to scrap pay for volunteers and built iron works.

61 July - west

Despite limited investments I have enough strength to embark on offensive against prevent CSA from having raiding base in the Missouri.

Unless Confederate forces defending Springfield are reinforced I should be able to secure it.

To my great surprise Southern forces are combined in one mighty stack. Fortunately until October neither of the sides will be able successfully attack strong and well entrenched opponent.

I will use it to my advantage and put some pressure on Major's flanks.

It needs to be said, that I miscounted amount of available troops and once I noticed my mistake I decide to move back to Jefferson city to regroup and refill supplies.

Soon I will move south again.

Advance in Valley continues and its progress is shielded by cavalry force that is focused on damaging rail roads and gaining military controll.

Hopefully I will drag some CSA forces westwards.

I plan to build more cavalry units to strengthen my raiding force.

I am back at Springfield gates.

Both forces will combine at the beginning of October and attack in divisional formation.

Unfortunately Major didn't divide his forces and I wasn't strong enough to risk flanking movement towards Frederiksburg in presence of mighty Army of Potomac.

I will be now. More and more troops arrive and divisional structure will give me enough flexibility to march south while having my lines of supply protected.

In the meantime I am building marines and sailors to field amphibious division.

According to the plan Confederate forces at Springfield were defeated. Once city falls I will march towards Fayette.

I think I am strong enough to undertake offensive. Grant will continue conquering Valley and forces from Leesburg (augmented by arriving reinforcements) will strike south towards Fredericksburg.

23000 will march and attack Fredericksburg, 35000 will move to Falmouth. 500000 are left defend Alexandra and Grant has 17000 under his command.

Poor poor play from me.

JE Johnston attacked and captured Saint Louis. To make things worse 4 constructed ironclads were capture by enemy.

Suddenly my forces in Springfield found themselves in great danger so I decided to retreat north.

Without having sufficient forces to oppose CSA in the field I decided to embark small divertive attack. 12000 will be sent to attack Island 10.

More grave news.

Major's idleness lulled me into falese sense of security. Forces that were marching south towards Frederickburg were intercepted by Beauregard and destroyed. What made things worse many of lost units were elite brigades.

Loosing 22000 men was big blow, but abandoning Manassas by CSA army granted me opportunity to advance south and possibly establish strong position south of Rappahannock River.

Once reinforced both McClellan and Grant will have around 45000 men each.

Forces in Missouri continue their retreat towards Lexington. CSA Army in Saint Louis is happy to stay in winter quarters.

Union forces at Island 10 fail to mount assault.

I suffered one more setback. Army in Culpeper (under command of McDowell) was attack by two separate Confederate forces and pushed out north. Not good.

I fear I can't do much more with forces and commanders at hand so I decided to start amphibious operations in east Virginia. Grant with 22000 is on its way (including full amphibious division).

Finally in early January I managed to assemble retreating army at Lexington. It seems, that soon they will face more challenging enemy than one encountered at Springfield - JE Johnston is approaching and CSA fleet appeared to block Union riverine movement.

Somehow Union army managed to storm Island 10. Now it is time to retreat north to Cairo. Both riverine and land ways are open - activating Kentucky event made latter option available.

Once again I started to probe southwards.

P Kearney commanding freshly assembled cavalry division (3000 men and more to come) gained some territorial foothold in Cuelper and now McDowell will move there by rail (53000).

Grant sails back to Washington and GH Thomas with 8000 soldiers under his command will blitz through Valley aiming to destroy Confederate partisans - assault posture will all out attack option chosen.

Predictably Battle of Lexington was lost. Fortunately CSA fleet wasn;t numerous enough to block my retreat route.

There is not much to fight further west, so I decided to move in opposite direction to Bloomington and await Major's moves.

Due to harsh winter condition troops from Saint Louis area retreat to Cairo. No more demonstration for a while. At the moment safety has priority.

Good news from the east.

Grant's attack on Norfolk dragged Beauregard towards this area what I exploited by moving him back north and reinforcing push towards Charlottesville.

One more positive development was promotion of G. Thomas. 3 successful battles with partisants during the course of one turn did the trick.

In the meantime marines landed in south-east Virginia to hamper movements of main Confederate army.

Rebel army moved back to Saint Louis. I am far too weak for any significant offensive action, but I decided to take advantage of Confederate unprotected lines of supply.

CSA rapidly strengthening its presence in Kentucky. 15000 under gen Buell is nowhere near enough. Reinforcements will be sent, but ultimately I will rely on my fleet to keep Confederates on southern side of Ohio river.

Gen J Johnston left Saint Louis and moved south. In the meantime Confederate fleet blocked all riverine movements to/from Cairo. All in all I expect assault. I fear 35000 men under gen Halleck won't be enough for successful defence.

I don't have any available reinforcements so I decided to present Major with choice - proceed with attack on Cairo and risk loosing Saint Louis (gen Sumner 15000 men can probably capture it) or strengthen city's garrison and risk defeat at Cairo.

In the mean time CSA continues its build up in Kentucky.

Finally I province of Louis is completely under Union's control. More units will be railed there and gen Kearny will move to Hanover.

Major decided to keep hold of Saint Louis. Consequence of his choice was destruction of my raiding force.

Saint Louis won't be retaken any time soon - gen Sumner and his force are being transferred to Cairo area.

Confederate forces are on their move in Kentucky. I am far from being able defend successfully so to bide my time I retreat to Louisville.

In the mean time partisans will try to disrupt southern supply lines and fleet will cover my flanks.

I managed to capture ligtly held Fredericksburg. Now I will follow up with attack on Falmouth strengthening my positions in Culpeper at the same time.

Further north my situation is equally good - Alexandra is defended by 65000 men what should be enough protect Washington for 2 turns.

Supply wise thing look bright - Kearny captured King and Queen, so in contrast to Confederate Army at Manassas Union forces south of Rappahannock are well fed.

There was one more good news - gen Grant got promotion.
