Finally!!

Information just came out yesterday. Waited a long time for someone to try to do an accurate hull of the Yorktown class in 1/350 ever since the Trumpy Hornet disaster!!!!

And now we are gonna have a Yorktown class from Midway!!!! Must be a CV6 following I hope, but it would be easy to convert this kit to CV6 at the Midway time frame.

Here are a couple of quotes from another site:

"The hull is close. It's a million times better than the Trumpy hull, and it's even closer than the 1/200 Merit USS Hornet hull. I may get to hold the test print of the hull this week.

I can say, though, that if they incorporate all of the feedback given -- and according to the CAD we've been seeing they are listening -- the AA fit and other details are spot-on for Yorky at Midway."

and.....

"Indeed it is not a joke. I have held the hull in the very hands typing this - at the Nats in Hampton today. I have made my objections to Trumpy's (and BWN's) HORNET very loud and clear in the CASF CV-8 HORNET thread. The hull looks to be very good in its agreement to the plans I have worked with for many years. This is is a test shot, and the Merit rep discussed some errors to be corrected and listened to some thoughts I provided. I did not have those plans with me (of course) but it sure looked right in most respects. This was hull only. The Rep said they were reluctant to bring other parts because he knew they were in need of correction and so did not want to get too much of a negative vibe going before they had a chance to do it right.
In this same discussion he talked about folks on this board with which he has worked by name, but that, to me, shows they are trying to do it right. Thanks to all who have helped get them this far. I am very optimistic we will have a worthy representation of CV-5 (and probably the other two in the class) before our grandkids sell our unbuilt kits at some garage sale in thirty years.
I did not take any photos. Fair warning: there is some out of scale hull plating treatment on the test shot that will be revised more to scale by production time so give them a chance to make that change as well. The hull shape under it is what counts. Remember that when you see the test shot photos."

Cool. The Enterprise and Yorktown are more interesting subjects than the Hornet. Really the Hornet's only claim to fame was the Doolittle Raid. Its air group's performance at Midway was very poor (though probably would have been better if Waldron was the CAG). The ship was only in commission for a year. The Enterprise, of course, lends itself to the widest range of versions and air groups since it had the longest combat career of any US CV. I never really got why the only 1/350 and 1/200 Yorktown class carrier out there was the Hornet.

If the 1/350 Yorktown is out before November I might try to score one during Squadron's Black Friday sale. The last couple of years they have had a 50% off everything sale the day after Thanksgiving. I scored a 1/200 Missouri last year.

I've been looking for parts to make a late war Saratoga conversion for a while now. Nobody had released anything like that. I ended up with two 1/350 Lexingtons and wanted to convert one to the Saratoga circa 1944. There are a lot of aftermarket AA guns out there for the Essex class CVs, but the added gun tubs will mostly have to be scratch built.

I would like to build all the pre-war US carriers, but completing the pre-war built cadre would be tough. I think there are resin Rangers and Wasps out there, but they are very expensive and only basic kits. Having a nice Enterprise and Yorktown would be nice.

About how long would the hull be in that scale?

A little over 2 feet. 26.4 inches if the scale is correct.

I heard about this on the ModelWarships forum.

Looking forward to this. Trumpeter seriously dropped the ball an their Yorktowns. I hope the 5"/25 guns are done well on this one. I've always been partial to a graded scheme Yorktown.

I ordered a 1/350 Chikuma last week, of course with aftermarket everything for the weapons. (couldn't help myself). I can enjoy paint linoleum instead of wood. The right shade of gray will take some research. Each shipyard had it's own particular color, and I'm guessing Kure gray will be the right one for '42.

Revell has a 1/72 Flower class corvette, which is extremely tempting. I know it would be the only model on that shelf of the curio.

The Revell 1/144 Fletcher is a great looking kit. It lends itself to many sub-versions too.

A little more news here regarding the York.

Merit Yorktown

It appears to still be a work in progress. It sounds like they're seriously listening to people who are knowledgeable on this ship, so that bodes well.

I wonder if I can fit Yorktown, Franklin and Independence on one shelf...

Check this link again. Page 3.

They have posted pics of a very early test shot of the Yorktown hull and hanger deck. Sounds like from the posts of the thread that the hull plating will be removed completely. Once you get past the plating the hull really almost resembles the 480 scale Revell kit. This looks like its going to be good!!!

I see a CV6 on the horizon as well.
