The CW has had diabolical luck in this game so far. We have another example of that now...

The Axis roll a 1. The CW roll a 9. This is gonna hurt.

After the surprise points are spent on forcing a surface combat, it looks like the RN cruisers are probably about to take another ferocious beating in order to save the AMPH supplying Malta, not to mention the juicy RN carriers...

As suspected...

Royal Navy return fire damages and aborts the Impero, and aborts the CL Bari.

The RN has to linger to get that AMPH through, surely the Axis cant be this lucky twice. In a naval air combat the RN has the advantage.

I was gonna just avoid if the RN won the search but... as the tables are turned. Revenge seems possible.

I read somewhere advice that the CW should always be daring, so... ok, naval air combat on.

The Ju-87 on the Aquila is unable to fend off any CW bombers, they all get through escorted by the Gladiators.

Remaining surprise points go on reducing vicious AA fire, the end result is lowest 1 of 3, and that's a 2. Lucky Swordfish.

1 destroyed 2 aborted, CW has first pick.

Aquila goes to Davy Jone's Locker! I think that's the first Italian capital ship sunk.

There's another search roll, the Allies avoid combat, don't think this should be pushed.

No combat in the Eastern Med.

Back to the Eastern Front, and the Luftwaffe make air strikes around the Dnieper. The Russians scramble 2 fighters, the Germans have only twin engine fighters to hold them off...

Even with the o-chit the odds are not amazing. After the air support dust has settled (both sides commit everything), it looks like this.

And the roll is... on the river hex... a 17! the Germans are over! That's the important one.

And in the forest hex to the south they roll a 9, not so good, half disorganised and the enemy retreats as it was the blitzkrieg table. That actually achieves nothing, as the Soviets fall back in good order there.

The Japanese retake Shanghai meanwhile in an invasion, removing the partisans.

<snip> I lied, turn didn't end, it was a 3 and I assumed that was enough, erroneously it seems.

Allied #9 now begins then.

Going to leave it there tonight, more tomorrow hopefully.

Can I ask a favour please? Can you put at least the current turn at top of the posts? I get awfully confused in my frail dotage when flicking from one AAR to the next, as to where in the war we are!

Things really aren't going well for Japan at all in China... a long period without oil, some amazingly bad partisan problems, an ever enlarging Chinese army... China has a synth oil plant up and running and lend leased a US bomber, that really isn't helping either, plus Mao's army is surprisingly good!

Incidentally all the optional rules are in play with the exception of Nationalist Chinese attack weakness so Chiang has teeth in this too.

warspite1

I really find the war in China difficult (which I guess it's supposed to be ). All those mountains, the lack of Japanese HQ, the lack of Japanese ground strike capability, the shortage of armour, and the need to build up for the Pacific War.... Tough!

Sure!

This is entirely Mar/Apr 42 so far.

Mar/Apr 1942 Allied #9

Yeremenko finds a disrupted, out of supply MOT that got railed in at the start of the turn.

The Soviets cross the river at Smolensk, intent on pressuring the Germans there, and at the Dnieper move to try and contain the German bridgehead over the river. A Russian stack of armour is hanging back a bit in reserve there.

Mao and Chiang continue to press in on the Japanese, but the retaking of Shanghai has restored Japanese supply and so the situation looks stable, if a bit precarious for Tojo...

The Japanese cannot, under ANY circumstances, leave those port towns ungarrisoned. The partisans are a HUGE issue in China.

Mar/Apr 42 Allied #9

The Brits close in on Tripoli with their land action... notice the huge out of supply fleet at Malta, not one of the CW's finest moments. But if they do get supplied, they a re going to end up in a very high search box right off Italy's shore...

Mar/Apr 42 Allied #9

The opportunity at Minsk was just too good to pass up, at Smolensk though this is probably a bad idea.

I reckoned without the Luftwaffe, there were quite a few available bombers in the area, and despite the rain, 3 factors got added to the defence of both defenders.

Probably should've assaulted not blitzed at Smolensk and gone hunting for kills, but the low odds after Luftwaffe intervention scared the Soviets a bit. Not much happened in the end.

Turn doesn't end.

Mar/Apr 42 Axis #11.

Italy takes a combined to have more chance of engaging the CW fleet in the Western Med and keep railing stuff to Greece.

Germany, after some mulling, goes for a naval. They have their breach on the Dnieper but it's rainy there and there's not much chance of them expanding that breach with a land action. This is probably the last impulse too, and thats the time for U-boats to strike, before the CW has time to rearrange their convoys after damage is done!

Japan takes a land action, so their forces in China can be rearranged in a defensive line and more troops can be unloaded at Shanghai.

German submarines go all over the Atlantic, the old pre-dreadnoughts go to the Baltic (planning on staying at sea for the odd shore bombardment point), and given the Bay of Biscay is somewhat empty - though there is a scary Sunderland there - Bismarck and some CAs join the fray there!

Going to be a busy turn at sea.

Mar/Apr 42 Axis #11.

Bismarck finds the convoys and the Sunderland doesn't find the Bismarck. The CW do scramble a Hampden and put it in the 0 box though, to soak up some surprise points.

Mar/Apr 42 Axis #11

The Axis use all their surprise points to force a surface combat, and horrible things happen to the RN cruisers, though the convoys are protected by their sacrifice. The Admiralty swears revenge, if they have a turn to get it.

Now the CW have to decide, abort and save the convoys to convoy another day but suffer a huge production hit most likely, or risk hanging around with only the Sunderland to protect them?

On the Axis side, Admiral Hipper is aborted and a submarine aborted and damaged.

The Axis look to continue the fight, the CW think about it, eventually also decide not to quit the sea area.

No further combat occurs.

Mar/Apr 42 Axis #11.

In the North Atlantic the submarines get the drop on the USN. The convoys are heavily defended though, 24 ASW points as the majority of the US forces are there. After some pondering the German subs decide to go for a surface combat instead, and strike at the American CV force in the 3 box!

The hunters become the hunted. Unfortunately they dont' have enough surprise points or naval factors to select a target and get a destroyed result on it.

American damage control seems pretty good, Concord is selected for the destroyed result but is only damaged. Pensacola is also damaged, and Concord gets aborted too.

The weakest German submarine is also damaged and aborted.

Both sides choose to continue the fight but no more naval combat happens. This is the first time the USN has been in action, and the results - inconclusive, I think. Which suits the Allies fine.

Apr/Mar 42 Axis #11.

No combat happens in the Baltic or Eastern Med. In the Western Med the Allies get a 1 and the Axis a 9, given the CW 11 surprise points. 11! There's some serious pondering going on as the Regia Marina could suffer quite badly at the hands of the carriers with that, but... in the end, caution prevails, much better to unlock the fleet at Malta, so the CW avoid the combat and the naval combat ends.

Apr/May 42 Axis #11.

The Japanese land another MIL at Shanghai, and the previous MIL and division move out, headed for Haichow to kill the partisan there. I think the plan here is to pull back across the Yellow River and form a defensive line there with proper partisan control. I guess Japan will have to find resources from elsewhere - the PI, the Dutch East Indies.

Mar/Apr 42 Allied #13.

Everybody passes except the Commonwealth. The Soviets just want time to pass so they get reinforcements, plus their troops able to be aggressive (Yeremenko, the guys in Smolensk) are all disorganised. Rain in China mean Mao's forces can't attack, they'd rather not give the Japanese a chance to get over the river with some reorging. The US is still mostly stuck to naval only and everything has moved.

The Commonwealth wants to hunt the Bismarck though, and finish Libya, so they take a combined.

All bar one pass, 80% chance of the turn ending.

40 naval factors go to the 4 box in Biscay. 15 go to the 0 box in case of very bad luck. No combat happens though, Operation Sink the Bismarck fails. The CW declines to engage in the other sea boxes where there is contact.

In Africa, Tripoli falls to the Commonwealth, and with a roll of 2 the Mar/Apr 1942 turn ends.

Mar/Apr 1942 end of turn.

A 3-2 partisan appears in Calcutta, sucks to be the Commonwealth (Delhi and Bombay have troops in them). Nanking gains a 3-2 partisan as well, yet more fun and games for the unfortunate Japanese in China.
