Are scenarios 17 and 19 the norm?

Ive noticed most of the games seem to use those 2 scenarios and as I ramp up my experience with the game was wondering if my "practice sessions" getting ready for PBEM should revolve around those 2 choices.

Basically, yes, these 2 are the most freqently play PBEM games. Actually, 17 is played most often by far (as 19 tends to give certain advantages to the IJN player - or I rather consider them "equalizers"). But 17 and 19 allow the most time and options for players to generate their own stratagy.

If you're new to PBEM, I'd recommend that you play the Americans against someone (and not be overly agressive) in Scen17. But as USN, time is on your side so you don't HAVE to be agressive, and you can gloss over some mistakes. Just don't get all John Wayne and get all 6 of your CVs killed in the first 2 months.

Players do play the other scenarios, and I think people are more liable to exeriement a little more now that many of us have played (or been playing) 17 and 19 for a while, and anything is a good change of pace.

Frankly, I'd play you, but I spend way too long on each turn, and only get a turn done each night.

Thanks for the info. I just started playing a few days ago and Im going to grind against the AI for a bit to learn the mechanics.

Since the days of SSIs "Guadalcanal" and Avalon hills "Flat top" Ive been a huge fan of this campaign enjoying the challenge of the Japanese navies uphill battle against the wave of Allied men, ships and material that it brings.

I will be hard pressed to play form an allied perspective but you are probably right it may be some good experience ill find to be critical.

I too wanted to start my PBEM carreer with either 17 or 19, but the first answer I got back suggested we play senario 2. We played it twice changing sides after one game. We then went on to senario 4, and now we are on senario 6.

I found that by using the short( senario 2 is 11 turn long) senarios I really learned things quickly and because they are short, it is not so devastating to find out you screwed up.

And when playing as Allies in 17 or 19 it is somewhat hard to figure out what you are supposed to do( mostly nothing for at least 4-5 months).

Yes, as your FIRST game(s), I'd recommend the Coral Sea and Eastern Solomons scenarios (or is it called Santa Cruz, can't remember). They're short, and you can play them 5 or 6 times in a row, correcting each little mistake as you go.

The only difference in the Scen17 and Scen19 are...

Scen17 is historical, without the battle of Midway, meaning that IJN is going to recieve Hiryu, Soryu, Kaga, Akagi as reinforcements, and USN will get Yorktown. Sounds lop-sided yes, but IJN really needs those extra fleet carriers along the way for things to be at all matched.

Scen19 is the same as 17, except that IJN gets a few extra squadrons and ground units (representing transfers from Indo-China and Manchuria to help the push in the Bismark Sea). Also all IJN replacement rates are increased by 50%, which amounts to a whopping 95 A6M2s each month. Also, IJN replacement pilots are better, they come in at about 50exp instead of the 40exp that they do in 17. But you don't actually get any extra ships (some people seem to have thot that was true, it's not).

As far as stratagy for USN, -that- much I can tell you about (if you got an hour, read my AAR "Sibling Rivalry"). Basically, the first months of the conflict, your job is to make IJN pay for whatever gains they can make. You're gonna be out-gunned as USN for a while. You want to deny IJN the decisive CV engagement that will most likely put your carriers on the bottom. But at the same time, if you can contain his conquests, maybe pop a carrier or two WITHOUT LOSING YOUR OWN, you're doing ok. In my own game, we've somewhat found that "stalemate" ground in about October/November. Knavey (probably) isn't going to be able to push any farther, but I don't have the assets to mount a counter-offensive yet. I expect that as we drag into Decemebr and January, I'll be getting my CVs back (he actually hasn't SUNK any of mine, but sent several to the yards for repairs). But with my greater land-based assets, combined with a trio of carriers, I think I can start my campain to retain Gili-Gili, Lunga, and Tulagi (and then forward rom there). As USN, you just want to grind at IJN at attrit him until you can achieve a material advantage and then start moving forward. And attriting IJN's aircraft is also important (albeit a bit harder to do in Scen19).
