Recreation of the famous confrontation that occurred during the Falklands War in 1982.



After following the ARA General Belgrano task group for one day and four hours, the british nuclear submarine HMS Conqueror receives permission from the Royal Navy Command to intercept and sink the Argentine cruiser. If possible, his escorts too.

The green signal was given. Sink the Belgrano to send the following message to the Argentine government. Try to occupy these islands can cost more than they can afford.

- better starting positions for both Conqueror and the Argentine task group

- minor changes on weather conditions. Changed sea state from 2 to 1. Bug or no game bug. Inexplicably the Mk8 Straight-Runner torpedo will work.

- minor cosmetic changes on briefing

Tried twice, failed the first time as I completely lost the task group, got a minor victory the second after sinking the Belgrano. I think there is an issue in as much as the straight runners don't seem to quite work. If a Mk 8 is fired it seems to close down the mount reload process?

All worked if I stuck with Tigerfish though you have to fire from point blank range.

Trickier scenario than I first thought as the group tends to head out and away from you faster than I'd expected.

About the use of Mk8 straight-Runner torpedo


I tested sometimes this scenario and I also perceived that problem. I tried all the ways to use these torpedoes to stay as close to reality and I not succeeded. I did some experiments and found that when sea conditions changed to 1 instead of 2 like I did in the original scenario, I could use these torpedoes. Not sure if this is related to a bug in the game or if that torpedo does not work in rough seas.


About being a tricky scenario


Although I have already read a lot about this clash between the Conqueror and the Belgrano, I have not figured out what was the exact position of HMS Conqueror when the submarine started the interception to sink the Argentine ship. I decided to turn it to a more challenging scenario, I placed the submarine behind the enemy task force and a reasonable distance, between 5 and 10 miles depending of the submarine's starting position.

Afaik. In real life the submarine used the tactic of sprint and drift, alternating between 18 knots on the run from one point to the other and 5 knots when followed the targets by sonar. At the time of interception the Conqueror accelerated just below the Belgrano, who at that moment was a beautiful, fat, happy and dumb target, and stood less than 1500 feet to throw the old Mk8 torpedoes on the old ship. The ability of the British commander is impressive. That guy got balls of steel between his legs to go running just below the enemy ship in that way.

In real life the Argentines have not made many zigzags, they kept their old sonars turned off and did not have the minimum idea that there was a British nuclear shark right below them, which facilitated the use of the WWII style Straight-Runner torpedoes. In this scenario, I decided to implement a zigzag course to the Argentine group. The scenario will be more interesting and more difficult.

My best strategy to win this scenario is to run ahead of Argentine ships and take them from there. Before, it is necessary to predict the course they are following. After, submerge deep, keep full throttle (20 knots on average) and take a secure course to get in front of them.

When reach the point on front of task group, turn to 5 knots and keep changing the depth above and below the thermocline layer to fix their position without being detected. When you fix them, seek to avoid the escorts and position yourself as close as possible to the Belgrano. At the last moment, go to take a quick conference on the periscope to do a perfect fix, less than 10 seconds of exposition, and submerge again to shallow depth. Then fire the torpedoes and run deep to a new firing position, if the torpedoes does not work.
