As I recall - that sold for about $90 when Avalon Hill released it back in 1980....

Wow, that's what they're getting these days huh? Still have mine but it hasn't been set up since my son was an infant. Maybe sometime soon. Gee, I wonder what I paid for it back in the day?

A couple of years ago I got what seemed like an obscene amount for "Fire in the East" and "Scourged Earth." The later being un-punched. But now I realize that I probably go too little...

I bought it back when it was originally released for $60. I foolishly lent it to a relative interested in military history a few years later, and he promptly lost it in a move. After hearing me lament about this particular game for several years, my wife found me a copy on E-Bay for $120 and gave it to me on an anniversary. Since that anniversary was at least 10 years ago, I guess I'm not surprised to see it going for $250+ now.

I was thinking it was $60 or $65 at release. Thanks for confirming that senility hasn't set in yet.

Classic toys are valuable to the right person. Doesn't matter what the price is, they will buy it. I have a Handheld Coleco Football game I got back in the 70's which still works and looks good. Someone offered me $175 for it. I said no. Now that was 5 or 6 years ago. Wonder want I could get for it now....GP

Classic ridiculous time vampire games.

Definitely applies to The Longest Day. My brother and I affectionately referred to it as The Longest Game.
Applies to Fire in the East/Scorched Earth as well.

All things considered I guess this game puts them all to shame though. I actually played TLD to the end once. I believe it was something like 189 turns.

I just passed my 204th turn in my current game of WITPAE/BTS.

Takes far less time per turn than TLD did though.

Whilst I'm still a bit too young to have been interested in old board games, I had plenty of hand held battery/mains adapter powered electronic games dating back to the early 80's. I gave or threw them away a long long time ago, they go for good money on e-bay and the likes now. Hindsight is a great thing.......

One of the SSI games was my first. Overrun I think. The predecessor to steel panthers modern battles. I also played the WWII versions such as Typhoon of Steel.

Well, to help you out - here goes.

By the way, I spoke with the original poster of this thread...it wasn't this battle - he said it was the final incident of a long long series of game problems he didn't care for..

Just saying.

I'll add my bit as we head for ten.

I collected and played masses of Avalon Hill and SPI games. I would set up a "game room" (or space) everywhere we lived as the Army moved us about. The collection filled a closet (or several moving boxes.) Finally, in recognition that my long-suffering wife had just about had it with all of the space I was consuming, I delivered the games to day rooms and Army rec centers.

Years later, my buddy's wife cleaned out his similar collection by selling the titles on E-bay. I was stunned at the prices the old games commanded. All that capital would have kept me in computer games for all the years between then and the release of WITP which, of course, is the last wargame we needed to buy over the last several years.

In the beginning, I was shelving WITP:AE a lot. Why? I thought the game was unplayable due to its sheer size and volume of information. With time, I have installed Tracker, created checklists and reference library. The game is so good.

In which case this thread is spot on - IF it makes it to 10 pages!
