So close

What? The likeness of Sprior to the poster? I don't believe that! Englishmen cut their nails!

OK - another nudge toward page 2 of the AAR.

EDIT: Hey it worked - someone must have posted while I was composing.

Cool!

First thing he needs to do is get lots of fish to his scattered bases. Sardines, Kippers, Lutefisk, - it's all good ... to a Penguin!

Crikey you turn your back for 5 minutes and look what happens.

Rightio- no screenshots yet as I haven't figured out the best way to do those (hints welcome) but here's the state of play from the Commonwealth end.

It appears the WJD (wee jap dobbers) are going after New Zealand and/or Australia- or it's a clever ploy to draw our forces down there before they shift towards India, or knowing our opponents- Alaska! Regardless if it is a ploy it's working.

Nadi has fallen and I don't expect Suva to last long- especially with the KB parked to the south of the island. There are 4 USA arty batallion's there with the 45th USA base group and the 8th NZ brigade. The initial attack was repulsed and forts are at level 3 with reasonable supply levels (10K).

Fragments of the unrestricted units are being flown out to Vava'u and will be moved further back for rebuilding if required,

The initial assault on Noumea failed but a follow up force has landed at Koumac and is 2 hexes NW of the lonely garrison. There are no reinforcements in sight and I expect it to fall shortly. USA forces are largely being deployed in the Pacific so the Aussies and Kiwis are on their own.

Our opponents have pushed south very aggressively and the obvious location of the KB offers some potential to ambush the follow transport and invasion forces. At this stage that won't include the US carriers which retired back to the West Coast after getting stuck near Christmas island waving an empty gas can and with their thumbs out (the team that started this PBEM which we took over did not have tanker/AO support with the carriers).

However the Aussies have done reasonably well- ambushing one TF at Koumac, unfortunately after it had already unloaded. A as yet undetected AVD/AVP group at Luganville is providing good intelligence on Jap shipping movement in the area but the surface forces available are limited with some requiring urgent repairs in Oz.

Given the moves south in the Pacific I'm running supplies in from Cape Town to Australia but the first convoys are only just now rolling in. Port Moresby has fallen and forces are concentrated south of Rockhampton to avoid having significant forces cut off in Queensland or the Northern Territory should the WJD land further south. Aussie infantry divisions are rebuilding well and I've already started upgrading the militia to CMF squads.

The DEI is a bit of a mess with Singapore having just fallen (my fault for having forces in rest mode and not noticing the movement pipe- so the impact of the shock attack river crossing was not terribly debilitating on the Japanese. One of the reasons Singers fell was that significant forces were cut off further up the Malay peninsula. On the bright side the WJD have been very lax at preventing the evacuation of these troops and the 11th Indian div has escaped largely unscathed (AV 334) and approximately half the 9th Division has been evacuated.

Supplies are being shovelled into China through Rangoon as fast as we can get them in there and there's a nasty (as yet undetected) speed bump being constructed at Port Blair. Malay is defended by the starting units, the reformed 1st Burma Div and the 16th Indian Brigade.

With more Indian units recovered than expected the 18th Indian Division is on the way to Australia and will be followed by the 6th Australian Division. Most troops will be concentrated on the east coast of Oz as it's relatively easy to cut off troops in Perth. This could be a problem if the WJD take NZ and the west coast of Oz.

Damn lost the next post.

Ok- Naval losses we're in reasonable shape, 1CA, 2CL's and 10 DD's lost. POW is pretty banged up with system damage (it was like that when we got it- honest) and will after repair at Capetown/East coast be released for CV escort duties. The Japanese have lost (apparently) BB Kongo, CL Tatsuta and one DD. I can't vouch for Kongo as it was lost prior to our start date (11th Dec)- I doubt it's gone down as we're only showing 86pts for Jap ship losses.

Well that's enough for now. The game will be on hold for a bit with Fabertong not available. Feel free to ask any questions or alternatively let the AAR live up to it's title

Repairing ships in Oz with KB sitting off Suva seems pretty risky. It seems customary nowadays for KB to make a tour of the Australian coast on its way back to base.

That's true but it's all system damage and I'll be keeping an eye on KB while attempting to turn them around ASAP. KB is at least 4 turns away from strike range and CA Australia will be out of the yards next turn with CA Canberra requiring significantly longer (12days) but if I lose sight of KB she can clear port before they get in range. There are a few CL's under repair as well which will scarper if the boys come a calling.

Looks like the Japs are gunning hard for Suva, KB is still parked south and there are an extra couple of land units in the hex now. I expect an attack this turn. Meanwhile given (or assuming) the bulk of the carriers are there the CA's in the area will go hunting to the west.

Recon planes were spotted over Oosthaven last turn, could this be the opening move to a landing? We'll wait and see. Boise and a couple of destroyer escorts which were lurking in port are retiring to fighter cover in Batavia.

Tanker hunting, this could get interesting. I fully expect the KB to spot at least one of the Allied TF's but there's a golden opportunity here to ambush their replenishment TF. They don't know the Allies are in the area.

Can't edit the above post for some reason. Most of the hits on Zuikaku came from Houston so they were penetrations. Electra was sunk in subsequent air attacks but Houston is still afloat. I'll need to wait for the actual turn to check damage levels. The CL force is still in the area and it might be time to redirect some subs.

I don't think it is giving anything away to tell you that Cap Mandrake had some serious pucker when Houston started shooting at Zuikaku.

I'm home sick from work and bored, sounds like a good excuse to post in the AAR.

The turn still sits with the Empire but based on the combat replay it looks like an amphibious TF is heading for Oosthaven, a large stack is moving up the road to Sian and oh, we found the oilers

Only got one of them, in a night battle no less. A very light escort (one DD with 2 oilers)

AO Shinkoku Maru sunk by CL Leander at 5,000 yards

An amphib landing at Luganville spells the end of our naval search in the area and AM Doomba was, well Boombahed when three TB's showed up west of Suva.

Possibly the most worrying development is the popularity of our opponents AAR. It's already on the second page of most posts of all time!

Oh and the Chinese gave the IJA some indigestion at Wenchow

Japanese ground losses:
1462 casualties reported
Squads: 21 destroyed, 40 disabled
Non Combat: 18 destroyed, 10 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 1 disabled
Units retreated 1

Allied ground losses:
613 casualties reported
Squads: 5 destroyed, 76 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 4 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

A bit of good luck saw Leander catches the second AO in the TF and with heavy fires, heavy damage she's unlikely to make port.

With a heavy heart we must report the loss of CL Boise with all hands. Set upon by a wolf back of Japanese destroyers in the dark of night she too 4 torpedoes before going down.

Looks like the Japanese are heading for Norfolk Island, they'll get a warm reception

Gen Wavell
Right chaps, the Japs have taken Palemburg and the intel weenies have indicated that the denial of the oil fields is of paramount importance. Queen Beatrice has refused our requests to bomb the oilfields so we’re in a pretty pickle.

FO PERCY
What you need guv is plausible denile sir.

Gen Wavell
What are you blathering about Percy

FO PERCY
Well sir I recommend we go in at night. If there are any of the Dutch in the area they won’t recognise our planes in the dark and we can blame the damage on the Japs…….. or falling coconuts.

GEN WAVELL
Coconuts? What on earth have coconuts got to do with anything

FO PERCY
Dropped by swallows sir. Very keen on coconuts is your average swallow sir. And it’s difficult to tell the difference between a swallow and an aircraft at night, it’s a matter of perspective.

GEN WAVELL
What? A swallow carrying a coconut?

FO PERCY
Why not?

GEN WAVELL
I'll tell you why not ... because a swallow is about eight
inches long and weighs five ounces, and you'd be lucky
to find a coconut under a pound.

FO PERCY
It could grip it by the husk ...

GEN WAVELL
It's not a question of where he grips it, It's a simple
matter of weight - ratios ... A five-ounce bird could not
hold a a one pound coconut. And besides, coconuts don’t explode.

FO PERCY
Well, they do if you leave them to ferment in the sun sir. And if you’re hit from 10,000ft with a falling coconut you’re not likely to notice if it explodes or not sir.

GEN WAVELL
Look! To maintain Velocity, a swallow needs to beat
its wings four hundred and ninety three times every
second. right?

PO WAINSWORTH
It could be carried by an African swallow!

FO PERCY
Exactly sir. The average African swallow can carry more than a European swallow. Especially the ones that live on de Nile.

GEN WAVELL
What?

FO PERCY
Denile sir, as in plausible denile.

GEN WAVELL
Dear Lord (mutters and walks away)

Things have slowed down a little in the game. With the fall of Palemburg and Noumea we're now waiting on the next big push. Further landings in Java and Sumatra will obviously follow, as should an advance on Burma. They still haven't spotted our build up at Port Blair which is half way to fort level 3 with an Indian brigade, mobile CD, 6th Hvy AA and RAAF units in place. No further troops will be landed as it's only a delaying tactic and we don't want to lose too much there.

Political point spends have been few and far between which has allowed the 5th Chinese corp to be bought out (for full price) and is now 1 hex east of Lashio in Burma. They'll move overland towards Akyab or Cox's bazaar to rebuild in India proper.

Australia has several fighter squadrons which arrived as reinforcements training to bring the green pilots up to speed while all bomber squadrons are training for naval search of naval bombing due to the low replacement rates (rather than using for higher loss level ground attack roles). Nearly all of the Australian infantry formations have upgraded to CMF Inf and the 18th British division is only 1 turn away from arriving at Sydney via rail. Meanwhile the 16th and 19th Australian brigades who arrived as reinforcements from Aden are 5 days out from Perth. No further reinforcements will be sent unless our opponents commit to invading the east coast of Australia.

New Zealand is relatively week, I'm not willing to commit any further forces/reinforcements there yet, we're already likely to be cut off from the east, the next most dangerous assault would be if Perth and/or Tasmania were taken. That would truly isolate Australia.

Elements of the Australian 8th division have been moved to Lord Howe Island and, given enough time I'll place a speed bump on Norfolk island as well.

In the mean time the practice of disbanding TF's in the South Pacific to raid our opponents supply/follow up forces has paid dividends.

Aboard the bridge of USS Honolulu, there’s a stiff breeze blowing. A silver haired military officer wearing jungle fatigues stands smoking a large cigar, the patch on his uniform reads Col Carthage. In the distance there’s a large explosion- one of those Hollywood style explosions you get by filling something up with gasoline before setting off a charge underneath it, completely unrealistic.

The Colonel turns and grins at Captain Dodd who is standing nearby. “I love it when a plan comes together Captain, that’s the last Oiler, time for my team to be on our way”.

<Editors note; Hollywood explosion courtesy AO Ken'yo Maru, AO Kokuyo Maru heavy fires, heavy damage>

A PBY glides in to land on the port side of the Honolulu which slows to rendezvous. Down on the deck area an altercation appears to have broken out between a large African American and a number of crewmembers. The Colonel strides up to the gathering crowd

“BO- what the gawd damn are you doing”

BO; “Colonel I aint getting in that plane with that crazy fool again- you know how I hate flying”

Col, walking up to BO and placing his arm around his shoulders. “Come now BO, you’ve got it all wrong” suddenly the Col jabs a syringe into the side of BO’s arm who then drops like, well a someone who’s just been jabbed in the arm with a syringe.

After some assistance from the crew (who are understandably eager to get the strangers off the ship so that they can get underway) the PBY takes off.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sometime later, at an undisclosed location Gen Douglas MacArthur is handed a signal from a general lackey

<Editors note; The lackey is a Lieutenant, not a General but there’s so many of the buggers zipping around that it’s too hard to give them all names. So there’s a general surplus of Lieutenants and Captains but a relative shortage of Generals. In recognition of this there are actually two General MacArthurs, although one of them is currently somewhat indisposed in the Phillipines>

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“USS Honolulu to SW Pacific Command STOP

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MacArthur; “larger military? LARGER MILITARY. This is the god damn United States of America Lieutenant, no jumped up bunch of slant eyed Japs is going to get the better of this armed forces”

<Editors note- since MacArthur 1 has not yet evacuated the Phillipines, MacArthur 2 has not had the benefit of hindsight, with respect to having his behind handed to him>

MacArthur (cont); “and besides, there are no Gorrillas in the god damn South Pacific”

Lieutenant; “Yes sir, that’s what gives us the element of surprise sir. No one expects gorilla tactics”

<Editors note: or the Spanish Inquisition>

MacArthur; “So where are these Special Forces now Lieutenant”

Lieutenant; “We don’t know sir”

MacArthur; “Do you mean to tell me Lieutenant, that someone was able to flag down one of our warships, convince the good Captain to completely ignore his patrol orders, sink a Japanese fast tanker taskforce and then fly off into the sunset”

Lieutenant; “Sir , No SIR!”

MacArthur; “Well Lieutenant”

Lieutenant; “Sir , they didn’t fly off into the sunset, it was a more north easterly direction”

<To be continued>

Looks like the boys are coming to Oz. In the last turn we lost a chunk of the Aussie 8th Division on the way to Lord Howe Island but on the plus side their invasion TF was savaged by a lone Dutch destroyer. CL Honolulu got lucky and ran into an AKE/AG convoy and left them burning- not sunk (except for the AG). Hopefully the AKE's go down. She's very low on ammo and fuel though and has the KB to the south and heavy surface forces to the N and NE. Excerpt from internal command email below

The force to the north appears to be making for Rockhampton (it's a natural choke point to cut off NE Australia) while the Southern force is going for Lord Howe with KB in support. The British 18th Div just arrived at Sydney in strat move mode, it could make Rockhampton in a turn or maybe two but takes 3 turns to convert back to Combat mode. I'll move them to Towoomba (west of Brisbane), any further north and they can be flanked too easily.

CL Honolulu and escorts will attempt to clear the area- they are low on fuel and ammunition. They're currently north of KB which rules out making a run for Brisbane- I'll try for Townsville.

CL Adelaide, CL Concord and escorts will pay a visit to Pago Pago and surrounds to keep their attention divided.

CA Canberra, CL Raleigh will move up between Noumea and Suva, stay away from the KB and see if they can pick up some logistics tail.

Ships under repair at Melbourne will evacuate, there are a few under pierside repair that will take a few days to get out. There's a single CL at Sydney that will come out of the yard tomorrow.

Any other thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

Use the PP's as required to start buying out US Regiments/Divisions. If you can get anything across to Oz it would be good idea- probably via Cape town unless you want to escort them in with Carrier support.

If I see significant ground forces land I'll move the 11th Indian Division in from Colombo, they're almost at full strength.
