Hi guys,

I am effectively jamming VHF and L band radars like the Nebo SVU and 96L6 Cheese Board with the AN/ALQ-99 pods underneath my EA-18G from zero range all the way to the range limit of the radars. Since the AN/ALQ-99 provides only coverage in eight bands (C to J) I think this should be impossible.

Besides that I noticed that my radars are not tracking the jamming aircraft though passive angular tracking.

quote:

No less importantly, most modern Russian radars employ jammer angle tracking techniques, which combined with pervasive networking, will provide missile batteries with an organic capability to target SAMs against jamming aircraft. The potential for alternate SAM seeker types increases this risk

Also the 92N6E Grave Stone FCR can be fully jammed in the simulator. I question whether this is a realistic assumption. Although the AN/ALQ-99 covers the S or X-band (guess) of the Grave Stone the FCR is capable of fast and automatic frequency hopping with pulse-to-pulse hopping capability.

quote:

An increasing proportion of Russian engagement and now also acquisition radars are phased arrays, with at least two designs being active arrays with solid state transmitter modules (AESA). These provide agile beam steering, adaptive jammer nulling, adaptive allocation of transmit power, in addition to very low sidelobe emissions to frustrate emitter locating systems and anti-radiation missile seekers.

An important advantage in all phased arrays is they permit angle jam resistant high precision angle tracking by fast sequential lobbing, emulating monopulse techniques.

quote:

The late Cold War preference for compact antennas and S-band operation has been supplanted by a preference for designs operating in the L-band and VHF-band. Of the six recent Russian acquisition radar designs, only one may operate in the S-band, the remainder being beyond any question L-band or VHF-band designs.

The preference for lower bands is intended to defeat stealth shaping and coatings optimised for S-band and X-band threats, but also electronic warfare self protection systems most of which cannot jam below the S-band due to antenna size limitations.

So the problem is now that I can effectively jam everything across all radar bands and all technology (legacy to modern) with just a Growler creating unrealistic situations.

Sure. How about 2 million US dollars, a paid time share in St. Marty's and a lifetime supply of Trollbegone!

Added 2 factors in Build 773 that mitigate this:

1) Tech generations are now taken into account for noise jamming (OECM). So old jammers are less effective vs modern radars and vice versa.

2) PESA (and especially AESA) radars get strong resistance bonus against noise jamming.

Still looking into passive jammer tracking (VERY complex stuff).
