I have learnt to start with the small ones. Command offers so much micromanaging that it

really is useful to play small scenarios at low time compression rates. Thus one can

maximize the learning experience.

The first scenario I played many times was Maria y Victoria. And now...Stand

Up...another small one, and located around the Falkland Islands, too.

I start with placing my scarce air assets in the hopefully best way.

Since I have only four fighter-bombers I have decided to attack every unknown object

which is on collision course and doesn´t turn away when illuminated. I think that´s fair

and realistic enough.

The first hostile unit which runs into my CAP is a scouting helo, coming too close. It is

shot down. No risk.

Argentinian Skyhawks inbound, flying attack profiles!

Two Typhoons are waiting for them, missiles away!

Three Skyhawks are downed by Amraams. A fourth Skyhawk comes closer. My

Typhoons go for it.

Too bad, the Asraams miss, my Typhoons are out of missiles and have to RTB.

One Skyhawk follows them, certainly it has Sidewinders onboard. Both Typhoons are

ordered to go to military speed. I cannot afford losing even one of them.

The Skyhawk has changed course and is heading for the HMS Portland!

Target illuminated, SAMs underway!

Boom! The fith Seawolf gets the Skyhawk. About time.

An Argentinian P-3B Orion is approaching HMS Portland from the North. Portland

changes course due North and activates its radars.

Holy crap, the Orion is too high for the Seawolf SAM. And no Typhoon around chasing

down that recce bird. Thirty minutes to go before the next Typhoon is ready for launch.

Still no clue what the two vessels approaching HMS Portland from the North West are.

Could be hostile warships, could be fishing vessels. Portland´s helo is out to identify

them.

Both ships remain silent, no emissions. Now, is that enough to sink them with

Harpoons? On the other side: can I allow Portland to be attacked?

The unknown vessels unmask themselves: they shoot down my helo. Here we are.

HMS Portland is going to use its Harpoons for sure and asap.

Harpoons underway!

One target destroyed, the D 10 Almirante Brown. I made the mistake to let the AI auto-

engage. Thus all my eight Harpoons were allocated on a single ship. The second is still

approaching HMS Portland. Not good.

The Typhoon is ready, launched. Heading for that Orion in order to down it.

Got it! Two Amraams did the job.

Another target detected: a KC-130 Hercules. The Typhoon chases it down, another pair

of Amraams launched. Kill.

I must not forget my little, nearly unarmed, surface group approaching the Falklands

from the South East. There is a hostile warship on an interception course which carries

SSMs.

Portland reports an Vampire inbound! I had forgotten about that trailing second hostile

vessel. It has closed, I thought Portland was faster and out of danger.

A second Vampire is heading for Portland.

The Seawolf system now has to make it count. Seven are fired...hit!...hit!

Portland has escaped and is Eastbound at flank speed. That was close.

Meanwhile the Typhoon is chasing down the Orion spying out my base. Got it! Now for

that Tracker in the South...

The Typhoon downs it, spending the remaining Asraams. Now I use this wonderful bird

as a recce bird, spying that hostile ship in the South.


This ship is a Meko 140 Class Corvette. Carrying Exocets and thus dangerous.

How to sink it? my ships have no SSMs left. On the other side, Portland has a large number of

114mm shells...

Yes, decided. Portland is making flank speed South East in order to support the

inbound convoy. The other assistance will come from a Typhoon which will be armed

with LGBs.

The Typhoon downs another Hercules and another Tracker.

Launched a helo from RAF Mount Pleasant. Course Southbound. It detects another

skung, doing five knots. A fisherboat or an Argentinian?

Meanwhile HMS Portland detects one, too. Doing five knots, also. What is it?

I like the fact that you are doing your AAR in a narrative summary, makes it more interesting for me. Look forward to reading the next section.

AAR, Part Two

Two skunks identified as neutral, fishing boats. Very good. Thus I can focus on the

Meko Class Corvette.

Sending the Typhoon Southbound shadowing it. And my airborne helo. launching a

LGB armed Typhoon.

Starting my first air-to-air-refueling in Command. The ATA armed Typhoon needs fuel.

Works perfectly - well done,devs!

To attack or not to attack, that´s the question. Shall I try it with LGBs. The hostile Corvette

only has 40mm guns as air defense.

Attack!

All four Paveways underway. All miss. The Corvette is steaming at 28 knots,

undamaged.

Gotta conduct my attacks better to sink that ship.

I really love this scenario. well suited to learn Command´s oustanding micromanagement possibilities. Think I´ll finish it tomorrow, then I´ll finish the AAR, too.

i agree with cdu801.... sounds like your having fun.... im surprised all your lgb's misses... if there is a cloud layer.... you can go under it to illuminate your target better.. and on unarmed or or poorly defended targets you can go gun them down.... which is very satisfying...

Altitude and cloud layer - good hint. I set the LGB-armed Typhoon on auto-attack. For the second run I´ll switch to manual and focus on a rather low attack profile.

AAR, Part Three

Following advice I got on the forum, I have started to attack the corvette with 27mm gun

fire. It works - great! my recce Typhoon fired all five rounds into the hostile vessel,

hurting is significantly. The ship answered with firing 40mm and 76mm shells, but in vain.

This is great micromanagement! I love this sim, great fun.

The problem with that Argentinian corvette is that it carries four Exocet sea skimmers.

And I have no SSMs left. Seems that I have to sink it with LGBs and gunfire.

Well, HMS Portaland is underway, though out of Harpoons. But it has tons of 114mm

shells.

Maybe I could jam the hostile ship´s sensors, using my Typhoon. And thus Portland

could approach unscathed and unload its shells.

Hmm...maybe this would be kinda risky...and I should try LGBs.
Ok, offensive jamming activated, HMS Portland approaches at flank speed.


All three remaining fighter bombers are aground and reloading LGBs. Four more hours

at least.

Patience or impatience? Shall I really risk HMS Portland and its crew just to accelearte

the course of events?

No, I reduce Portlands speed to creep speed and stay clear of missile range.

The corvette no longer burns, all fires extinguished. But there is still flooding, the 27mm

shells really have hurt it more than I anticipated.
Interesting. The hostile corvette, ARA Spiro has managed the flooding, too. But, on the

other side, damage has changed from light to medium and it only makes 19 knots.

Sounds good. So let´s play a game of chess with it and wait till it´s time to strike.

Even more interesting: the corvette trails my aircraft. If I switch the Typhoon and the

tanker bird from West to east, the ship follows.

Ok, let´s use this behaviour to lure it away from HMS Portand and Northbound where

soon my Typhoons will launch, loaded with LGBs.

New skunk detected! Doing 9 knots, in the North. Time to finish the corvette off in order

to evaluate this new contact.

First Typhoon ready and launched.


On station.

Four Paveways underway!

Hit and sunk !!!

Yes, it works.

Now for that new skunk in the North...

Classified as neutral. Very good.

Meanwhile the small convoy is approaching the target zone, marked by refpoints.

Another skunk detected. Classified as neutral.


My small convoy has entered the refpoint marked zone. No more hostile units

detected.

Nothing left to do and 20 hours to go.

I decide to finish the scenario.

It´s a only minor victory, 250 points. Just because I lost one helo?

have I overlooked something?

Not sure. Well, not so important, either.

This was great fun!
