I feel that if a game is very simple that the AI is very good because its not hard for the AI: Combat Command Matrix edition.

When a game is very complex the AI appears good because its complex for me: Command Ops: Battles from the Bulge.

Hannibal vs Rome.

I just picked this one up last week while it was on sale. I think I'm going to try it out tonight.

Looks like it's still only $10.

Edit: For what it's worth, the tutorial is very good also. Fresh little game.

Unity of Command has a good AI. This may have to do with it's limited complexity, but it does well within those constraints. i.e. Takes good advantage of breakthroughs by spearheading deep while shoring up the 'shoulders', falls back to defensible positions, cuts supply lines, reinforces weak spots.

I found the scenarios a bit too puzzle-like for my taste, more so with the base game than the add-ons, and thought very highly of the UI.

So far Flashpoint Red Storm's AI has been kicking my A%* . I've been playing the American Campaign for a week and the Soviet AI has been rolling right over my forces.

1. Command Ops (any game) has a great ai.

2. Panzer Command: Osfront has a good ai.

3. Norbsofts American Civilwar series. (honestly it may not have the best ai but it's the most fun to play of all of them.)

4. Pike n Shot has an excellent ai.

5. Spartan v 1.013 before it was patched to Troy v1.017 has a very good ai if you play it outside of the scenario description. I forget which one it was I think the Poly wars and played to conquer the map and it was very challenging.

Edit: Honorable mention should go to Ageod games but I never liked the gameplay enough to really comment fairly on the ai. I also think many will say WitP or WitE but I feel they will get comment more because they are complex monster games than a game with good to great ai's.

I'm not picking on any particular game, but don't confuse a good AI with an AI that cheats!

All AI cheat. It is part of the program, how they cheat is important but they all do.

Not all AI's..I believe Command Ops doesn't have a cheating AI and I'm sure Combat Mission X2 doesn't either.

Not so. Our Command Ops AI does not cheat. It accesses information exactly the same way as the human player does through intel reports from its units. Nor can it get more resources or do more with the ones it has.

From the OP's question "What are the top five games that Matrix publishes that have the best AI?"

Where are these thousands of games that Matrix publishes?

My five in no particular order

Hannibal vs Rome
Command Ops
Decisive Campaigns
Flashpoint Campaigns
Strategic Command 3 (admittedly a bit speculative but based on my experiences of the preceding SC games)

"Most AIs cheat" or even "almost all AIs cheat" is still more accurate than "all AIs cheat, period"

I mean, what were you expecting? Of course people are going to take umbrage at the statement you just made.

Not a Matrix Game, but just like the other post here I've always been impressed with the AI on Strategic Command 2 (it's almost too good, as you are forced into the historical strategy because you will soon find taking some crazy strategy like attacking through Turkey will not work, and you soon find why the generals of that time chose a particular strategy). Which I hope bodes well for SC3.

-1 to berto.

You've failed to define "cheat" before saying "no".

Do you mean - instant reactions, production bonus, omniscient view of the galaxy or anything else which might be considered to be a "cheat" (to limit it to a DW contect)? If you examine any one of these and find the equivalents in any other (roughly similar) game , you're nearly guaranteed to find at least one instance of "cheating".

Yes, I think Twitribes is probably right. Writing an epic scale 4x game without any cheating (of any form) by the AI is probably something we won't see for a while.

caveat: I'm referring only to "decent" or better games. I'm sure there's a lot of absolutely crap games out there that don't do any cheating... or much of anything for that matter. I'm sure you can find something on Steam that doesn't cheat at all.

Kayoz..berto is not wrong..we aren't talking about epic 4x games but wargames in general. He is right not all AI's in wargames cheat. Some go by the exact same rules as the human player.

Also just so you know Command Ops is certainly not a crap game..infact it's one of the best wargames out there.

Combat Mission I and II though "need" a cheating ai. It's so predictable every game. If you go up the sides in both versions with a healthy frontal feint you can flank it every time.

Sorry I forgot to mention this because to me it's COTA but yes a very good and honest AI but an entirely different game.

I must weigh in with my irreverent, but ACCURATE, response. Any game you PBEM with warspite1 has the best AI-that is his artificial intelligence.
