This is a mod for those who don't like NATO symbol counters (Personally I love them). They are based on the in game icons.

Unzip to the Dat/Art/Units folder. The zip (next post) includes the originals renamed so no need to create your own backup. They are also WitE compatible.

I like all the symbols, with the exception of the "Fort" one. A tower from medieval castle (or from chess)? Was there really no icon for bunkers?

I took inspiration from the insignia of 11 BR Corps - it represents a Martello tower, the 74 towers built during the Napoleonic wars against a possible French invasion. Their badge was chosen as symbolic of the number of pill-boxes and strong points constructed by the Corps along the East Coast whilst fulfilling its anti-invasion role in 1940/1941. The Corps formed part of the Home Forces and did not serve overseas.

If I could think of a better symbol for security than barbed wire we could swap that.

These are great.
What program did you use to make these?

Corel Paint Shop Pro X6.  I used it to do all the Unit Insignia and Icons too.

Thanks John,
I was interested in how you produced the 32bit tga (Targa) files for WitW. The programs I have (Adobe Elements 13 and ACDsee 8) either no longer support tga format or only the 24bit tga format.
I'm assuming Corel supports 32bit tga.

Bob - embarrassingly it must do but I never realised - they just work in game.

No matter what format, all your unit insignia and icons look great and add a lot to the game. Like your unit counters too.
Wonder if you'll get what you want in "Shamelessly cashing in your MVP award" on the development site.

Deciding which symbols to use can be a maddening exercise.

I like the paratrooper and cavalry symbols a lot. The basic artillery symbol is also very good because it is very easy to read.

The self-propelled artillery unit looks a bit like an assault gun -- perhaps if the gun barrel were tilted up at more of an angle it would suggest bombardment rather than direct fire.

The fort symbol could use some work, but fort symbols never come easily. When I was modding Battlefront and Fury Software's Strategic Command my approach was to try to portray a pillbox in profile: a large black square with rounded corners, and a small horizontal rectangle cut out of one of its sides to suggest gun slits.

I've yet to see a symbol for partisans that I actually like. I usually give up in despair and settle for a large P, though in this style what you want is someone scruffy and un-military holding a rifle. Not sure how I feel about using the bomb from Stratego as a partisan symbol.

The image for the machine gun symbol is clearly a mortar team.

It's all moot, though, because I don't have the game and can't tell what the symbols would look like when they're mounted on counters.

The units file inside the map folder of the John Tiller Panzer Campaigns games is a very good source for this kind of symbol. One of the symbols, by the way, is a water-cooled machine gun in profile.

The Partisan symbol should be a baggy flat cap. They always seem to be wearing them in WWII action movies.

yes ty, i'm doing them now and have printed them out first on my colour laser as i only have the DL version, but getting more info from video's atm as i'm not the greatest with books or manuals unless it's been written by raymond feist or other fantasy author etc

while they are good at telling you what to do step by step and easy to follow, a video does show a 1000 words can do every min or so, so maybe for some it's better, while i agree reading it and doing it may sink in more, watching and doing also helps me, then i'll read on the finer points later if and when needed, which will be more than likely sooner lol
